Android groups biometric unlock methods into three security classes: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. These labels describe how a specific face or fingerprint implementation meets Android’s security and performance criteria; they are not settings owners can freely switch between. The class matters most when an app asks Android to authenticate you or protect a cryptographic operation.

What Android’s three biometric classes mean

Android evaluates both how a biometric system performs and how securely it is built. Its class overview lists the following spoof acceptance rate (SAR) bands for all presentation attack instrument (PAI) species and a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 1 in 50,000 for each class. These are technical criteria, not observed attack rates for a particular phone or a forecast of its real-world risk.

Android class Older label SAR band, all PAI species FAR in Android’s overview
Class 1 Convenience 20–30% 1/50,000
Class 2 Weak 7–20% 1/50,000
Class 3 Strong 0–7% 1/50,000

Android’s official biometric measurement documentation defines SAR as the chance that a biometric model accepts a previously recorded, known-good sample during a spoof attack. FAR measures how often the system accepts a randomly chosen incorrect input. For some modalities, Android also considers imposter acceptance rate (IAR), which concerns inputs intended to imitate a known-good sample. Android cautions that FAR alone does not describe resistance to targeted attacks.

Security architecture matters too

The class is not determined only by a recognition score. Android also considers whether a compromised kernel or platform could read raw biometric data or inject synthetic data into the authentication process. A secure pipeline is designed to prevent those actions even if those parts of the system are compromised.

What the class changes for apps

Apps can request a particular strength of biometric authentication. Under Android’s compatibility rules, Class 3 is required when an app requests strong biometrics or uses a cryptographic object that depends on biometric authentication. Class 1 has fewer app-facing capabilities, while Class 2 may support some uses but cannot meet a request that specifically requires strong authentication. The Android biometrics overview describes biometrics as a secondary authentication tier, not a replacement for the device credential.

This is why one phone may let face unlock approve a banking app while another allows face recognition only for unlocking the screen. The app is relying on Android’s reported biometric strength and the capabilities available on that device—not merely the manufacturer’s “face unlock” label.

How to check your phone’s face or fingerprint class

A class applies to a specific biometric implementation, not automatically to every sensor or method on a phone. A device could have different capabilities for face recognition and fingerprint recognition. To assess whether a method suits an app, look for model-specific manufacturer documentation that identifies the modality and its Android biometric class. If that information is not documented, the feature name alone does not establish its class.

You can also check the app’s own behavior: if it offers biometric sign-in or approval, that shows the app accepts at least one available authentication path on your device. It does not, by itself, prove a particular class or show that every app will accept the same method.

Why your PIN, pattern, or password still matters

Android requires a primary device credential—such as a PIN, pattern, or password—as a fallback to biometrics. The conditions and timing for requiring that credential can vary by biometric class, Android version, and device launch history. Android’s compatibility documentation notes that upgraded phones may remain subject to requirements associated with the Android version they originally launched with, so a single interval should not be assumed to apply to every current phone.

A model-specific example needs a caveat

On September 27, 2026, BGR reported that Pixel 8 and newer offer Class 3 facial scans. That is a dated, secondary report about named models, not a universal rule for all Android phones or proof that every software configuration has identical behavior. Check Google’s documentation for the exact model and software version before relying on the claim for a purchase or security decision.
