The BFI’s detailed selections named platform listings for 12 programmes. It also named Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, Celebrity Traitors and Gaza: Doctors Under Attack in its 2025 overview. TV Guide’s December 2025 UK guide listed BBC iPlayer for Celebrity Traitors. These are historical listings, not checks of October 2026 catalogues or international rights. Crime, justice and social tensions
Adolescence (Netflix)
Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne’s four-part psychological crime drama follows a family after 13-year-old Jamie is arrested for killing a classmate. Each episode was filmed in one continuous take, a formal choice that keeps the action unfolding without conventional cuts. The story also engages with toxic masculinity and online misogyny.

- British Mysteries
Ofcom reported that the series had 12.2 million UK viewers through the end of March 2025, making it the most-watched show of Q1 2025. Ofcom credits Barb for the audience data; the figure is a first-quarter measure, not a full-year total. [Ofcom, Media Nations 2025 – UK Report]
Bibaa & Nicole: Murder in the Park (Sky)
This documentary examines the murders of sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman and the police failures exposed by the case. Interviews and evidence, including 999 calls, build the account. BFI quotes their mother, Mina Smallman: “Nothing about that team made me think they didn’t have our backs.” [BFI, 10 December 2025]
Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel’s War (ITV)
Benjamin Zand’s testimony-driven documentary reports claims by IDF soldiers interviewed by its producers that they witnessed war crimes. Those are claims presented by the film, not findings established by the programme listing. In the BFI’s December 2025 account, the documentary was available through ITV’s platforms and freely on YouTube; that listing does not establish current availability.

Get Millie Black (Channel 4)
Marlon James’s crime noir follows former Met detective Millie as she returns to Kingston, Jamaica, and joins the Jamaican police. The parallel story of her sister Hibiscus gives the series an emotional dimension beyond the investigation.
The Hack (ITV)
Jack Thorne’s seven-episode drama brings together the phone-hacking scandal and the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan. David Tennant plays journalist Nick Davies, while Robert Carlyle plays DCS Dave Cook. Its appeal lies in the collision of a press-corruption story with a long-running murder case.
The Feud (5)
Aschlin Ditta’s crime thriller turns a dispute over a lawyer’s new kitchen and property boundaries into an absurd, camp escalation involving blackmail, kidnapping and murder. Choose this for a more comic, heightened take on crime than the list’s sober documentaries and dramas.
Rank #3
Psychological and high-concept thrillers
The Girlfriend (Amazon Prime Video)
This psychological thriller centres on Laura, a wealthy gallery owner, and Cherry, the new girlfriend of Laura’s son. The narrative shifts between their points of view, encouraging viewers to reassess what they believe about each woman rather than settling immediately on a single account.
Prime Target (Apple TV)
Cambridge mathematics student Edward Brooks attracts a mysterious enemy after making a breakthrough, then joins forces with government agent Taylah. Steve Thompson’s thriller is an escapist, high-budget production shot in UK and US locations, according to the BFI.
Documentaries that confront real events
Grenfell: Uncovered (Netflix)
Olaide Sadiq’s documentary examines the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, in which 72 people died. It brings together first-hand accounts and analysis of institutional failures. This is a film about real deaths, bereaved families and continuing questions of accountability, so it is a serious rather than casual viewing choice.
Rank #4
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth (Disney+)
The BFI names this documentary among its examples of television examining a real-life tragedy. Its 2025 overview does not provide a fuller synopsis, so that is the extent of what can be responsibly said here.
Gaza: Doctors Under Attack (Channel 4)
The BFI says the documentary was initially commissioned by the BBC, then dropped and licensed to Channel 4 after controversy around another documentary, Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone. The episode formed part of a broader year of questions about broadcaster trust; its inclusion here does not resolve the underlying controversy.
Shifty (BBC iPlayer)
Adam Curtis’s five-part documentary uses archival footage and pop music to examine forces unleashed on Britain in the 1980s. The BFI notes both its argument and its potentially challenging form: fragmented construction and captions may frustrate some viewers. It was listed on BBC iPlayer from June 2025.

Ocean with David Attenborough (Disney+)
This natural-history film/programme explores ocean life and the damage caused by bottom trawling. The BFI entry identifies Attenborough as its creator and quotes him: “We have seen more of other planets that we have of the ocean.” The BFI entry does not provide the original context for the sentence. [BFI, 10 December 2025]
Riot Women (BBC)
Sally Wainwright’s West Yorkshire comedy-drama follows menopausal women who form a rock band. Friendship and parent-child relationships sit alongside dementia caregiving and structural misogyny, giving the show a mix of humour, personal conflict and social observation.
Reality entertainment
Celebrity Traitors (BBC / BBC iPlayer)
The BFI called Celebrity Traitors one of the year’s biggest shows and pointed to its place in the appeal of live viewing. TV Guide’s December 2025 UK guide listed BBC iPlayer. Those descriptions establish neither a numerical audience figure nor current catalogue status. [BFI, 10 December 2025; TV Guide, 23 December 2025]
