No app can tell you how productive you were. What these ten tools can do is record a specific proxy, such as hours logged against tasks, time spent in applications and websites, focus patterns, or team activity, and show it back to you. Which one suits you depends on which proxy you need. The shortlist below comes from Toggl’s 2026 comparison of time-tracking tools. Toggl is itself one of the ten apps, so treat the list as a starting point, not an independent ranking.
What “measuring productivity” means in these apps
The word “productivity” covers several different things, and each app records only one or two of them. Before you pick a tool, identify which kind of signal you are after:
- Time logged to tasks or projects. You, or the app, assign hours to a client, project, or task. This is the basis for timesheets and billing.
- Time in applications and websites. The app records which programs and sites were active and for how long. This shows where time went, not what you accomplished in it.
- Focus or distraction patterns. The app groups activity into focused blocks and distracting blocks, usually based on categories you or the vendor define.
- Team time and activity. Managers see hours, app use, or activity levels across a group. This is where workplace monitoring begins.
None of these signals measures the quality or value of the work. A high focus score can describe someone who spent four hours on the wrong problem. Vendor scores and dashboards are useful for spotting patterns in your own time, but they are not evidence that a tool improves output. No neutral head-to-head test published in the sources reviewed establishes which of these apps is most accurate, and the vendor figures that appear in comparisons are not independent proof of productivity gains.

The ten apps, grouped by what they measure
Manual time logs: Toggl, Clockify, and Harvest
These three depend on you starting and stopping timers, so their accuracy depends on your discipline.
- Toggl has task and project reports and lets you compare tracked time against a calendar, which helps you catch time you forgot to log. Its vendor materials also describe capacity planning and project management, and it runs on web, mobile, and desktop.
- Clockify offers one-click timers, project and tag categorization, dashboards, and browser extensions. Its materials also list Pomodoro timers, reminders, and idle detection, and it runs on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux.
- Harvest adds expense tracking, budget alerts, timesheet reminders, and invoice generation. This suits anyone who turns hours into invoices. The 2026 comparison describes these features, but plan details should be checked on Harvest’s site before you rely on them.
Automatic capture for personal focus: RescueTime, Rize, Memtime, and Timely
These apps record activity without requiring a timer. The trade-off is that they capture everything on the device, including time you did not intend to count, so review matters.

- RescueTime tracks application and website time automatically and offers focus tools, goals, productivity reports, and timesheets. According to RescueTime’s own website, it does not collect keystrokes, screenshots, or webpage content. That is the vendor’s statement, and you should check it against the current privacy page.
- Rize provides automatic desktop tracking with focus analytics. The 2026 comparison lists macOS and Windows availability.
- Memtime builds a local activity timeline, and you assign projects to that timeline afterward. The 2026 comparison describes it this way, but confirm the current platform list and where data is stored before relying on it.
- Timely captures activity in the background and drafts timesheets with AI, which you review and approve. Its privacy and accuracy claims come from the 2026 comparison and have not been independently confirmed.
Team and workforce analytics: ActivTrak, Time Doctor, and Hubstaff
These tools are designed for managers, and they carry the most significant privacy and consent questions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Time Doctor provides time and activity reports, screenshots, and keyboard and mouse activity expressed as percentages. Percentage activity measures show that input happened. They do not show what the input produced.
- Hubstaff tracks time, applications and URLs, and activity levels, and it takes screenshots. It also includes location features and team scheduling. Confirm current availability and plan limits with the vendor.
- ActivTrak tracks application and website usage and provides focus-time analysis and workforce analytics. According to the 2026 comparison, screenshots are an optional paid add-on. Confirm this with the vendor, since add-on status can change.
Privacy, consent, and monitoring
If you are tracking yourself, the main privacy question is what the app stores on your device or in the vendor’s cloud and who can access it. If you are tracking other people, the question is whether they know, agree, and understand how the data will be used. The shortlist’s source warns that tracking can feel like surveillance, and recommends explaining what team data will be used for before rollout.

Screenshots, keyboard and mouse metrics, and location features are the features most likely to change how a team feels about a tool. A tool that records only app and website time is a different proposition from one that captures screen content. If your question is “which app tracks our team’s productivity,” the honest answer is that the decision starts with the policy, not the software.

How to choose
- Decide whom you are measuring. If it is yourself, start with personal tools. If it is a team, go to the monitoring section above and settle the consent and policy question before installing anything.
- Pick the proxy you need. For billable hours, start with Harvest, Toggl, or Clockify. For your own focus habits, start with RescueTime or Rize. For team activity, start with ActivTrak, Time Doctor, or Hubstaff.
- Choose manual or automatic capture. Manual timers give you control over each entry but depend on remembering to start them. Automatic capture records more, but you will need to review and relabel entries.
- Check what is captured and who sees it. Look for screenshots, keystroke data, and location features, and check the vendor’s privacy statement.
- Verify live pricing and platform support on each vendor’s site.
- Test with a week of real use and compare the app’s totals with a calendar or timesheet you already keep. Large gaps usually point to missed timers, idle time being counted as activity, or categories set up incorrectly.
Common problems and fixes
- Manual timers are missing hours. Set reminders, use idle detection where offered, and log time at the end of each block rather than at the end of the week.
- Automatic tracking shows time that was not work. Create categories for personal browsing and meetings, and review the timeline before exporting totals.
- Team members object to monitoring. Explain which data is collected, who can view it, and how it will be used, and consider limiting collection to app and website time rather than screen content.
- Totals look precise but do not match reality. Treat the figures as proxies. Compare trends across weeks rather than trusting a single day’s focus score.
