Stuart Hall’s work on Thatcherism and media analysis can be read alongside his role in a cultural-studies book about the Sony Walkman—but the available records do not show that Hall argued the Walkman caused or explained Thatcherism. The connection is a useful editorial way into British cultural studies: one subject is political change and media meaning; the other is an everyday device examined as culture.

What is Thatcherism in Stuart Hall’s writing?

Hall’s bibliography records both political analysis and work on media meaning. It lists “Thatcherism Today,” published in New Statesman and Society on 26 November 1993, and “The Television Discourse: Encoding and Decoding,” published in a 1993 introductory reader. These entries make it reasonable to explore Hall’s writing on politics beside his media analysis, but they do not establish a direct argument connecting Thatcherism to the Walkman.

For a starting point, consult the Stuart Hall Foundation bibliography. A separate University of California, Irvine cultural-studies guide lists both the Walkman book and Hall’s “Encoding and Decoding” among primary sources for British cultural studies.

How does the Sony Walkman fit into British cultural studies?

The Walkman appears not only as audio equipment but as a subject for cultural analysis. The 1997 book Doing Cultural Studies: The Story of the Sony Walkman was published by Sage in association with the Open University. Its authors include Stuart Hall, Paul Du Gay, Linda Janes, Hugh Mackay and Keith Negus; the book is listed as 151 pages.

Sony WM-FX195 Walkman AM / FM Stereo Cassette Player with Auto Shut-Off
  • AM/FM stereo tuner features large tuning scale with wide spacing between numerical markers for easy, precise frequency centering
  • Wide band AM tuning with frequency up to 1710 kHz allows reception of all AM radio stations regulated by FCC in new, expanded AM band
  • FM Local/Distant (DX) switch
  • Anti-rolling mechanism for smooth tape playback
  • Automatic shutoff in playback mode

That makes the book a concrete route into how cultural studies can examine an ordinary media device and the meanings attached to it. It does not, on its own, support the stronger claim that Hall treated the Walkman as a symbol or explanation of Thatcherism.
