Text message marketing gives businesses a direct way to send timely promotions and useful customer updates to people who have agreed to receive them. It can help with appointment reminders, delivery notices, account alerts, and limited-time offers—but a text being sent does not mean it was delivered, read, or acted on. Its value depends on permission, relevance, delivery, and whether measurable outcomes justify the effort and cost.
What are the practical benefits of text message marketing?
SMS is most useful when a message is time-sensitive, brief, and relevant to the recipient. It can serve both marketing and service needs, but subscribers should understand what kinds of messages they are signing up to receive.
- Time-sensitive promotions: A retailer or venue can tell opted-in subscribers about a short-lived offer or event.
- Appointment reminders: A service business can send a reminder that helps a customer keep or reschedule a booking.
- Order and delivery updates: A business can communicate a confirmation or status change without requiring the customer to check a website.
- Important account or operational notices: Organizations may use texts for security alerts or urgent updates when that channel fits the customer’s expectations.
These are potential uses, not a promise of higher sales or retention. The best fit is a message the recipient reasonably expects and can use.

What do consumer surveys say—and what do they not prove?
EZ Texting, a messaging vendor, reported that its 2026 Consumer Texting Behavior Report surveyed 959 U.S. consumers. In that survey, 87% said they check a new text within 15 minutes, 89% said they had signed up to receive texts from a business, and 65% preferred texts for appointment reminders. These are vendor-reported survey findings, not universal measures of campaign performance. EZ Texting’s 2026 report does not establish that a particular business will achieve a given open, click, purchase, or retention rate.

Likewise, a Twilio page headline reports 132% ROI and $2.13 million in net present value. The page describes a Total Economic Impact study commissioned from Forrester Consulting; those figures are modeled vendor-sponsored analysis, not a forecast or guaranteed result for an individual business. Read the study description from Twilio in that context rather than using its headline as a general benchmark.
Why sending a text is not the same as reaching a customer
Track the campaign as a funnel: the people eligible and recorded as having consented, attempted sends, successful deliveries, opt-outs, measured clicks or replies, and meaningful outcomes such as completed bookings or purchases. Keep delivery separate from response and conversion. Counting sends alone can make a campaign appear to reach more people than it does.
A U.S. Office of Evaluation Sciences evaluation involving child care providers in a benefits-related government messaging program found that 1,096 of 3,268 messages were successfully delivered—approximately one third. This is a result from that specific program, not a commercial campaign benchmark. The evaluation also found no meaningful difference between its two tested wording conditions, but delivery failures and low opt-out rates among delivered messages limited what it could establish about wording. See the Office of Evaluation Sciences evaluation for its scope and findings.

Do not assume that texts are always read, inherently inexpensive, or guaranteed to outperform email. The sources cited here do not establish a general causal sales lift or a cross-channel performance comparison. Actual results depend on audience, message purpose, timing, delivery, and costs.
How to protect subscriber trust and meet U.S. requirements
A phone number alone does not show that its owner expects promotional texts. Use clear signup language, explain the message types subscribers will receive, identify the sender, keep messages relevant, and provide a workable way to stop future texts. Review the requirements for the specific campaign and circumstances before sending; U.S. rules concerning texts, consent, and telemarketing can be legally contextual.

The FCC’s official order addresses rules for certain calls and texts, while the Government Accountability Office summarizes FCC rulemaking and implementation dates. Neither source substitutes for legal advice about a particular campaign. Consult the current official materials and qualified counsel when needed: FCC Order 23-107 and GAO’s summary of FCC rulemaking.
Using a third party to send messages does not necessarily transfer responsibility for the marketing practices. In a historical enforcement release about alleged deceptive text-message marketing, the FTC quoted its Bureau of Consumer Protection director Jessica Rich: “You can’t avoid responsibility by hiring a third-party to send them for you.” The statement belongs to that enforcement context, but it underscores the importance of oversight. How to decide whether SMS is worth implementing
Start with the customer need, not the software. Identify the message purpose, the audience that has agreed to receive it, the outcome you want, and the costs involved. Then decide whether SMS is an appropriate channel and whether you can measure delivery and downstream results.
If you proceed, compare messaging services on practical capabilities rather than headline claims:
- Subscriber records and consent management
- Audience segmentation and scheduling
- Delivery, reply, click, and opt-out reporting
- Integrations with the systems used to manage bookings, orders, or customers
- Capacity, customer support, and current pricing
EZ Texting and Twilio are examples of services discussed in the sources, but the available material does not provide a neutral, like-for-like platform comparison. Check current features and costs directly before choosing a service.
