Tesla began offering Robotaxi rides in Austin on June 22, 2025, after Elon Musk had described that date as a tentative target. The launch was limited—not a broad, unsupervised public service: early riders were invited to book within a geofenced part of South Austin, and contemporaneous reports described a small Model Y fleet with a Tesla employee in the front passenger seat as a safety monitor. Current service details differ by location, so the launch fare and hours should not be treated as current terms.
What Musk announced—and what happened on June 22
On June 11, 2025, Musk said Tesla’s Robotaxi service would “tentatively” launch in Austin on June 22. He explained that the target could change because Tesla was “being super paranoid about safety,” as the Associated Press reported from his post on X. Tesla did begin giving rides in Austin on June 22. Early access was limited to invited riders, and coverage described a geofenced area in South Austin rather than citywide availability. Contemporary accounts also described a small fleet of Model Y vehicles and a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat. TechCrunch reported remote monitoring as well. These launch details describe the operation at that time; they do not establish how every ride was supervised or how the service operates today. Tesla’s current support pages list limited Robotaxi service areas in six cities: Austin, Dallas, and Houston in Texas, and Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in Florida. Those listings do not mean every neighborhood in each city is served. Tesla says riders can see the service boundary in the app, and availability and vehicle type may differ by area. What a rider should check before booking
- Open the Robotaxi app. Tesla says bookings require the app and a mobile device, and that riders must book for themselves. Tesla Robotaxi Support
- Enter a destination and check the service boundary. The destination must be within the area currently shown in the app; a city’s presence on Tesla’s list does not imply citywide coverage.
- Review the estimate and wait time. Tesla says the app displays both before you confirm. The fare and operating hours can vary by area and may change, so the launch-day $4.20 fare is not a current quote.

What the launch-era numbers do—and do not—tell you

These figures help explain how narrowly the service started, but they are not performance or safety statistics. The cited launch reports do not establish a comparable safety rate for the initial operation.

Austin’s official autonomous-vehicle page says Texas law prevents cities from regulating autonomous vehicles. It describes state-level authorization and oversight functions and says the city works with TxDMV and companies using Austin’s transportation-network knowledge. Austin also warns that its incident reports are not validated, include only reports the city receives, and may not capture every event. The presence of a passenger-seat monitor in launch coverage is a description of that reported setup, not proof that the service was either fully driverless in every operational sense or safe by virtue of the monitor’s presence.
