Tesla fell to 95th place in the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, down from 63rd in 2024 and 8th in 2021. SpaceX and X also faced weak or declining reputations, with large partisan perception gaps. The results show how survey respondents view these companies—not whether they are profitable, making good products, or winning contracts.
Where Tesla, SpaceX and X ranked in 2025
The Axios Harris Poll 100 ranks the 100 companies identified as most visible to Americans. In its 2025 results, Tesla was near the bottom, and Axios reported a decline in SpaceX’s reputation score. X, formerly Twitter, also scored poorly and had a longstanding weak position in the rankings. The reported findings do not establish a precise 2025 rank for SpaceX or X.

| Tesla | 95th of 100 | Down from 63rd in 2024 and 8th in 2021; last on character and near the bottom on ethics and citizenship. |
| SpaceX | Exact rank not stated in Axios report | Its reputation score declined; respondents’ Republican-Democratic perception gap was 28.7 points. |
| X (formerly Twitter) | Exact rank not stated in Axios report | Scored poorly and had a longstanding weak position; its Republican-Democratic perception gap was 29.5 points. |
For context, Toyota ranked fourth and Ford 60th in the 2025 survey. Tesla’s slide is notable because it moved from the top ten in 2021 to 95th in 2025, but the ranking alone does not identify why respondents’ views changed. Axios reported the 2025 results on May 20, 2025.

Why Tesla’s reputation fell
The results point to weak perceptions of Tesla’s character, ethics and citizenship, alongside a highly polarized public view of the company. Axios reported that the Republican-Democratic perception gap for Tesla was 32.3 points. Musk’s alignment with President Trump coincided with the company-level pattern, but the poll is observational: it does not prove that Musk’s politics caused Tesla’s rank to fall.

Political polarization may matter differently to different customers. Tesla sells directly to consumers, so views of the company can be relevant to individual purchase decisions. SpaceX, by contrast, is primarily an aerospace contractor and launch provider, while X is a social platform. A shared reputation score therefore does not imply the same commercial consequences for all three.
Axios also described SpaceX’s Republican-Democratic perception gap as 28.7 points. These figures indicate differences in perceptions between political groups; they are not measures of sales, product performance, or the share of customers who will leave.
How the Axios Harris Poll ranking is made
- Identify visible companies. A nationally representative awareness survey determines which 100 companies are most visible to Americans.
- Measure familiarity. A second survey asks about respondents’ familiarity with those companies.
- Rate familiar companies. Respondents assess companies across reputation dimensions, which feed into a Reputational Quotient (RQ) and the overall ranking.
Harris says it has used this framework since 1999. The 2025 methodology reports sampling precision of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for each wave at a 95% confidence level. That precision describes the survey waves; it does not mean every company’s rank is separated from the next by a statistically meaningful margin. The Harris Poll’s methodology and Axios Harris Poll 100 materials describe the process.
What a low reputation rank does—and does not—show
The Axios Harris Poll is a measure of public perception. It is not a direct assessment of revenue, profits, product quality, customer satisfaction, or a company’s ability to win contracts. A poor rank can signal reputational risk, but it cannot by itself establish that a business is failing.
Separate operating figures can add context without changing what the poll measures. Futurism reported that Tesla sales fell 37% in Europe and 9% in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025, while net income fell 71%. Those figures are not outputs of the Harris survey and should not be treated as an explanation proven by the ranking. Futurism’s report on Tesla’s sales and net income covers those operating results.
