Tesla is preparing to introduce its supervised driving system in China, but there was still no confirmed date for a broad consumer rollout as of Aug. 26, 2026. A May announcement described FSD Supervised as available, while the latest reporting said Tesla was not offering China subscriptions and that the complete feature suite was listed as arriving “later.” Those statements point to a limited or staged availability signal—not an unrestricted nationwide launch.

Is Tesla Full Self-Driving available in China?

Not in the straightforward sense many buyers mean. South China Morning Post reported on May 21, 2026, that Tesla announced FSD Supervised availability in China and nine other countries after a regulatory approval. However, CnEVPost reported on Aug. 26 that China was absent from Tesla’s subscription markets, no China FSD subscription was being offered, and Tesla’s Chinese website described the full suite as coming “later.”

The most accurate description is that Tesla has signaled availability or begun a limited release process, while broad retail access and the complete feature set remain unconfirmed. The reviewed reports do not establish which vehicles are eligible, which functions are enabled, or the exact scope of the authorization.

What Tesla has said, and when

Date Development What it establishes
Feb. 2026 Elon Musk was reported to expect Chinese approval in February. The forecast did not materialize on that timetable; China Daily denied that plan, according to the April report.
Apr. 23, 2026 Tesla’s Q1 financial update was reported as saying it was working to launch FSD in China “as soon as possible.” Tesla was pursuing a launch, but supplied no date.
May 21, 2026 SCMP reported Tesla’s announcement that FSD Supervised was available in China and nine other countries. An availability claim was made, but the report did not detail the approved functions or customer access conditions.
Aug. 26, 2026 CnEVPost reported that Tesla China denied leaving its Shanghai data center and said related work was progressing. Local preparation continued, while subscriptions and a broad rollout timeline remained unannounced.

Why “available” does not necessarily mean every owner can use it

Tesla uses several different signals for software availability: a regulator’s authorization, a company announcement, a country appearing on a website, and an owner being able to buy or activate a subscription. They are not interchangeable.

  • Toy vehicle form: Car
  • Included components: Batteries
  • Material: Metal
  • Authorization: The reviewed reports do not identify the regulator’s precise permissions or any restrictions attached to them.
  • Product listing: CnEVPost said Tesla’s Chinese site renamed the system “Tesla Assisted Driving” and described the full feature suite as available “later.”
  • Retail access: The same report said Tesla was not offering FSD subscriptions in China.
  • Feature parity: No source reviewed confirms that China receives the same functions, roads, or operating conditions as another market.

Consequently, a website label or launch announcement should not be read as proof that every Chinese Tesla owner can purchase the complete package today.

What “FSD Supervised” means

The reported product name is FSD Supervised. “Supervised” is material: it indicates a driver-assistance system that requires an attentive human driver, not a fully autonomous vehicle that removes the driver’s responsibility. The China reports do not support calling the system autonomous or claiming that it can operate without supervision.

The available reporting also does not specify the China version’s exact capabilities—such as where it can operate, which maneuvers are enabled, or what monitoring requirements apply. Those details should be confirmed through Tesla China’s current product documentation and any applicable regulator notice before treating the system as equivalent to another region’s version.

Can Tesla owners in China subscribe to FSD?

As of the Aug. 26 CnEVPost report, no China FSD subscription was being offered. The report did not establish a purchase price, a recurring subscription plan, a one-time price, or an activation process. It also did not state whether access would be restricted to particular Tesla models, hardware revisions, cities, test groups, or vehicle software versions.

Owners should therefore avoid assuming that an FSD purchase option available elsewhere will work on a China-market vehicle. A vehicle’s hardware, local software build, mapping coverage, data rules, and regulatory permissions can all affect eligibility.

What the Shanghai data center tells us

Tesla China said, in responses reported by CnEVPost, that “the Shanghai data center is operating normally,” that recruitment for driver-assistance-related positions was accelerating, and that “the relevant work is progressing steadily.” These statements support the conclusion that Tesla’s China program remains active.

Why the rollout matters in China

Tesla is attempting to expand a software-led driver-assistance proposition while Chinese manufacturers are adding comparable assistance features to more vehicles. CnEVPost identified Xiaomi and Huawei as part of that competitive backdrop. SCMP described Tesla’s announcement as intensifying competition among domestic electric-vehicle makers.

SCMP also reported an estimate from Gary Ng Cheuk-yan of Natixis Corporate and Investment Bank: Tesla’s China market share was 6% in 2025, compared with a 16% peak in 2020. That is an analyst figure reported by SCMP, not an official Tesla statistic. The sources do not demonstrate that FSD timing alone caused the change in market share, but a delayed or restricted rollout could weaken Tesla’s software differentiation while rivals broaden their offerings.

What remains unknown

  • The exact regulator-approved scope of FSD Supervised in China.
  • Which Tesla models, hardware configurations, and software versions qualify.
  • Which roads, cities, weather conditions, or driving tasks are supported.
  • Whether all announced functions are enabled or only a subset.
  • The Chinese purchase price, subscription terms, and activation date.
  • Whether access is available nationwide or limited to pilots, selected customers, or locations.
  • A firm date for unrestricted consumer rollout.

How to read future launch claims

  1. Check the date. Separate an older forecast from a current Tesla or regulator statement.
  2. Look for customer instructions. A real retail launch should identify eligible vehicles, purchase or activation steps, and applicable terms.
  3. Separate approval from access. Regulatory permission can precede a limited deployment or a later commercial release.
  4. Confirm the feature list. Do not import capabilities, prices, or coverage from the United States or another market.
  5. Verify supervision language. FSD Supervised still requires an attentive driver and should not be described as driverless technology.
