Some Tesla data annotators told Business Insider that they were sometimes instructed to disregard “No Turn on Red” and “No U-Turn” signs while labeling footage for Autopilot-related development. A former worker described the stated rationale as teaching the system to drive more like a person than a robot that simply follows rules. The accounts concern data labeling; they do not establish a formal company-wide policy or show that Tesla vehicles ignore those signs on the road.
What Tesla workers said about the signs
Business Insider reporter Grace Kay said she spoke with 17 current and former members of Tesla’s data annotation team. Seven of those workers said annotators were at times told to disregard “No Turn on Red” or “No U-Turn” signs, so those restrictions would not be used to train the system to adhere to them. Business Insider’s September 3, 2024 report describes the allegation as workers’ accounts, not as a published Tesla policy or an independently verified test of vehicle behavior.
One former worker characterized the rationale this way: “It’s a driver-first mentality. I think the idea is we want to train it to drive like a human would, not a robot that’s just following the rules.” The quote describes that worker’s understanding of the reasoning; it is not a direct statement from Tesla leadership.

According to the report, annotation teams in Buffalo, New York; Palo Alto, California; and Draper, Utah, worked on projects that could include reviewing short video clips, tracing objects in still images, or adding information to satellite overlays. The footage reportedly came from Tesla owners and in-house test drivers, and the work supported Autopilot and Full Self-Driving development. Those details are the newspaper’s account of the operation, not an independent audit of Tesla’s training data or systems.

Labeling is a development step: annotators identify or mark features in data so engineers can use it to train systems. Reuters described Tesla bringing data-labeling work in-house after dissatisfaction with contracted work. In an August 2021 presentation, then-Tesla AI senior director Andrej Karpathy said the company had grown to a “more than a 1,000-person data labeling (organization).” That is a historical figure from 2021, not a current headcount. Reuters’ 2021 account also quoted Karpathy saying the quality of earlier third-party datasets “was not amazing.”
What the report does—and does not—establish
- It establishes an attributed allegation: seven current or former workers told Business Insider they were sometimes instructed to disregard the two named turn restrictions during annotation.
- It does not establish a written or universal policy: the reporting does not show that every annotator received the instruction, or that Tesla formally adopted it company-wide.
- It does not establish on-road behavior: an annotation choice is not proof that a deployed vehicle will disregard a sign. The reporting does not test or document a vehicle doing so.
- Tesla’s response in the article was not available: Business Insider said Tesla, Elon Musk, and his legal team did not respond before publication. That is not an admission or denial, and it does not establish whether the company commented later.
A separate Futurism account published September 10, 2024 relayed an essay dictated to Business Insider by an anonymous current worker. The worker said there were times they were told to ignore the same signs and described the response as “Mind your business and your pay grade.” This is a secondary account of an unnamed worker’s words, not independently identifying evidence. Futurism’s account should therefore be understood as corroborating context for the reported testimony, not proof of a company-wide directive.

What Tesla’s driver guidance says
The 2024+ Model 3 Owner’s Manual says Autosteer requires active driver attention: “Your hands must be on the steering wheel at all times while Autosteer is engaged, and you must monitor your surroundings, the road, and other road users.” It also cautions drivers not to rely on Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to determine an appropriate speed and recommends staying within posted limits. These are driver-facing instructions; they neither confirm nor refute the annotators’ account. The cited manual is for 2024+ Model 3 and is market-specific, so wording and feature availability can vary by region and configuration. Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual
Safety context, kept separate from the allegation
There is broader safety context around driver attention and partially automated driving, but it does not verify this road-sign labeling claim. The Associated Press reported in December 2023 that NHTSA’s two-year investigation led to Tesla’s recall response concerning driver-attention safeguards. AP said that, since 2016, NHTSA had sent investigators to at least 35 crashes in which Teslas suspected of using a partially automated system struck parked emergency vehicles, motorcyclists, or crossing tractor-trailers, causing 17 deaths. These are figures from AP’s account of the investigation and concern a separate safety issue; they are not evidence that annotators were told to ignore signs. AP’s December 2023 report

A 2023 preprint by Sina Nordhoff and Joost De Winter summarized interviews with 103 Tesla Autopilot and FSD Beta users. Its model identified anticipated failures, unwanted behavior—including erratic steering or running red lights—and environments users believed automation was unsuited to as reasons for disengaging. The study is about user experience, not a validation of the sign-labeling allegation or a measurement of Tesla system performance. The 2023 preprint abstract
