Terafab is a planned SpaceX semiconductor facility in Grimes County, Texas—not a project with a confirmed December construction start in the official announcements reviewed. The Texas Governor’s Office announced the project on August 6, 2026, describing a first phase with more than $16.8 billion in capital investment, 3,000 new jobs and a planned 100-million-square-foot facility. Those are announced plans, not proof that construction has begun or that the factory is operating.

Where is Terafab, and who is building it?

The announced site is in Grimes County, Texas. On August 6, 2026, the Texas Governor’s Office said SpaceX would construct the facility. The announcement does not name Tesla as a builder, so the project should not be described as a joint Tesla–SpaceX construction project on the basis of that statement. The governor’s announcement describes Terafab as a semiconductor fabrication plant.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk described the planned operation as bringing logic, memory and advanced packaging together under one roof. That combination is intended to cover multiple stages and types of chip production at the same site; it is a description of the plan, not evidence that those production lines are already built.

Is construction confirmed to start in December?

No December start date is established by the official sources cited here. The August 6 state announcement says SpaceX “will construct” the plant, but does not give a December schedule. Terafab’s project website also describes future plans without providing a construction timetable. As of October 3, 2026, the reviewed official information therefore supports calling Terafab a planned project, not saying that work definitely starts in December or has already started.

That distinction matters: an announcement of investment and a future facility is not the same as a dated construction notice, active building work, or a completed factory. A confirmed start date would require a dated schedule from SpaceX or the county.

How big is the proposed facility?

The Texas Governor’s Office and Terafab’s project website describe a planned 100-million-square-foot facility. Terafab’s website compares that planned figure with Tesla Gigafactory Texas at 10 million square feet. The comparison indicates the scale being proposed, but the sources do not establish that both measurements cover identical kinds of space or use a common definition of facility area.

For that reason, “the biggest building in the world” is not a verified record based on these figures alone. The official sources support a 100-million-square-foot project description; they do not independently rank it against buildings worldwide under a consistent measurement standard. Treat “biggest” as a company or project characterization, not a settled global record.

What will Terafab cost, and what public support was announced?

The state announcement puts first-phase capital investment at more than $16.8 billion and says the project is expected to create 3,000 new jobs. These are figures announced by the Office of the Texas Governor, not independently verified final costs or job counts. The state also said it extended a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant to SpaceX and identified the facility as a qualified project under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.

Local reaction has included questions about incentives and transparency. TechCrunch reported on August 6, 2026, that hundreds attended a county meeting and residents raised those concerns. That account should be attributed to TechCrunch; the state announcement itself reports the incentives and project details rather than independently resolving residents’ concerns.

What production capacity is Terafab aiming for?

Terafab’s website states “Terafab output 1 TW/Year.” A SpaceX filing search-result excerpt describes a long-term goal of one terawatt of annual compute hardware. These statements describe an ambition or target, not current annual output, installed capacity, or a production commitment already being met. The available excerpt does not establish a detailed schedule for reaching that target.

What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?

  • Confirmed as announced plans: a SpaceX semiconductor facility in Grimes County, a planned 100-million-square-foot scale, more than $16.8 billion in first-phase capital investment, and 3,000 anticipated jobs, according to the Texas Governor’s Office.
  • Announced public support: a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant and JETI qualification, according to the state.
  • Company-stated ambition: one terawatt per year of output, as described on Terafab’s website; this is a target, not existing production.
  • Not established in the official sources reviewed: a December construction start date, whether physical work has begun, a completion date, and an independently verified world record for building size.
