In a September 2023 interview, Teradyne CIO Shannon Gath described an early, measured approach to generative AI: a cross-functional group set policies and shared lessons, while teams explored possible productivity gains with precautions and human verification. She discussed employee-facing Bing Enterprise, AI features in security products, and natural-language search for product-service work—but the interview did not establish measured results or describe Teradyne’s current AI practices.
What Gath said Teradyne was doing with generative AI
Gath said interest in generative AI was growing across Teradyne. Rather than leave each team to work in isolation, employees had organically formed a cross-functional group that functioned as a steering committee. It set policies and shared learnings between teams.
Her description was of experimentation under governance, not an unrestricted rollout. Gath said Teradyne was willing to accept some risk with precautions in pursuit of productivity benefits. The interview did not quantify adoption, productivity gains, or other outcomes.

Bing Enterprise and security products
Gath identified Bing Enterprise as an employee option and described it as “air gapped.” That is her characterization in the interview, not an independent security assessment. She also referred to security products with built-in AI capabilities. A related 2023 CIO report described Teradyne as using generative AI incidentally through security products and Bing Enterprise.
#1 Best Overall
Natural-language search for service work
Gath viewed natural-language AI search for product-service organizations as a potentially low-risk, early-benefit use case. The idea was to let people search for product or service information in ordinary language. She presented it as an opportunity to explore, not a deployed capability or a result demonstrated by measured gains.
How Teradyne approached risk and vendors
Gath emphasized human involvement and verification. She warned that generative AI could make phishing messages harder to recognize, making careful review and collaboration important. These were her interview observations, not a comprehensive technical risk assessment.
Rank #2
She said Teradyne’s security-question list for vendors had grown. In evaluating suppliers, she considered product roadmaps, how vendors planned to use generative AI, and how they would use and protect customers’ data. She described vendors as strategic partners and supported open dialogue about their plans.

The interview was published by CIO on September 28, 2023, as part of its CIO Leadership Live series, with Maryfran Johnson hosting Gath. The episode page describes Teradyne as spanning automated testing for electronics and industrial automation, including collaborative and automated mobile robots. Gath said she had interviewed more than 100 company leaders to understand growth plans and needed capabilities, then align technology investments with them.
Rank #3
She also said Teradyne had four ERP platforms and was moving toward a global cloud ERP platform. That is context from the 2023 conversation; it does not establish whether the transition was completed or what systems Teradyne uses today.
The interview is a historical account of Gath’s description at that time. Neither it nor the related 2023 report establishes Teradyne’s present-day AI policies, tools, deployments, or productivity results. The episode introduction’s company figures—“$3.7 billion” and “6,500 worldwide”—are likewise figures stated in that 2023 introduction, not current verified totals.
Quick Recap
What the interview does—and does not—show
- It shows: Gath described cross-functional policy-setting, shared learning, cautious experimentation, human verification, and attention to vendor security and data practices.
- It does not show: a current inventory of Teradyne’s AI tools, proof that the proposed service-search use case was deployed, or measured productivity or adoption results.
- It is not: a comparison or ranking of generative AI products.
