A 2024 Cybernews scan, reported by BetaNews, identified publicly exposed .env files associated with 58,364 unique websites and 1,141,004 exposed secrets. Those figures describe files and credentials visible on the public web—not 58,364 confirmed data breaches. The report does not establish how many credentials were valid, accessed, or used successfully, and it is not a current 2026 prevalence measurement.

For website owners, the practical issue is urgent: a public .env file can reveal passwords, API keys and service configuration. The correct response is to block the file, examine logs, replace every exposed credential, and fix the storage and access controls that allowed the exposure.

What the 58,364-website figure represents

BetaNews reported Cybernews research that found 1,141,004 exposed secrets across 58,364 unique websites in 2024. The count refers to secrets discovered in publicly reachable environment files and related exposures. It is a scan result, not a verified count of completed intrusions, account takeovers or permanently compromised sites. BetaNews’ report also does not provide a comparable 2026 count, so the number should not be presented as the number of websites currently exposed.

Exposure can still create a direct security risk. The impact depends on which values were visible, whether they were still valid, what systems they could reach, and whether controls such as least-privilege permissions, network restrictions or multifactor authentication limited their use.

What is an exposed .env file?

Developers commonly use a .env file to supply an application with environment-specific settings. It may contain database connection strings, cloud credentials, payment or email-service keys, content-management passwords, API tokens and other configuration values. The file is intended to remain on the server or in a protected deployment system, not to be delivered by a web server as a downloadable document.

If a server is misconfigured, an attacker can request the file through a browser or automated scan. Search engines and security crawlers can also index an accidentally public file. A visible value is a potential credential exposure; it is not, by itself, proof that someone authenticated with it or reached the underlying service.

Were the websites actually breached?

The available reporting cannot answer that for the 58,364 sites. It does not establish how many files were downloaded by attackers, how many credentials remained active, or how many systems experienced unauthorized access. Calling every exposed site “breached” would overstate the evidence.

Exposure and breach are different events

Term What it means What the 2024 figure establishes
Public exposure A file or secret could be retrieved from an Internet-facing location. The scan reported exposed secrets associated with 58,364 unique websites.
Credential use Someone used a visible password, token or key to authenticate. Not established by the cited scan.
Confirmed breach Unauthorized access to systems or data has been investigated and verified. Not established for the dataset as a whole.

What happened in the Applause example?

Cybernews reported finding a publicly hosted Applause environment file on July 21, 2024. The file contained credentials associated with WordPress, Salesforce, Marketo and GoTo Webinar. According to the report, the file had been indexed in April; Cybernews notified Applause on July 22, and the company closed the exposure. Applause said its investigation found no unauthorized access to its systems or data. The case demonstrates why exposed credentials require immediate action while also showing that exposure alone is not evidence of a confirmed breach. Details are in Cybernews’ incident report.

What to do if your .env file is public

Use this order so that you stop further disclosure before investigating and replacing credentials.

  1. Restrict public access immediately

Remove the file from the web root or deny requests to it at the web server, reverse proxy and application layers. Preserve a protected copy for investigation if required, but do not leave the original reachable while you plan a fix.

  2. Check access and deployment logs

Review web-server, CDN, firewall, hosting and provider audit logs for requests to the file and for subsequent use of the exposed services. Record timestamps, source addresses, user agents and authentication events. A lack of suspicious entries does not prove that the file was never copied, because logs may be incomplete or retained for a limited period.

  3. Invalidate and replace every exposed secret

Revoke or rotate passwords, API keys, tokens, database credentials and signing secrets contained in the file. Create replacements with the minimum permissions required, update the application securely, and verify that old values no longer work. Treat a secret as compromised even when logs show no obvious use.

    • Unit auto locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PIN attempts
    • Includes mini stylus for easier keypad entry
  4. Review access controls and encryption

Apply least-privilege permissions, restrict administrative and provider access, and ensure credentials are encrypted or held in an appropriate secrets-management mechanism rather than committed to a public directory or repository.

  5. Verify the fix and monitor for recurrence

Request the former file URL after remediation, check server configuration and deployment artifacts, and use a reputable online scanner or direct browser check as an additional verification. Add continuous secret scanning and alerts to deployment and source-control workflows; no single scan guarantees that an exposure cannot recur.

These actions reflect the response guidance described by Cybernews: make the file inaccessible, investigate access logs, rotate credentials, and strengthen access controls and encryption. See the Cybernews guidance and case details.

How to prevent a repeat exposure

Keep secrets out of public application paths

  • Store environment files outside the document root whenever the platform allows it.
  • Use explicit web-server deny rules for dotfiles and other configuration artifacts, while testing that rules do not expose alternate copies.
  • Exclude .env files from source repositories and build artifacts; use deployment-time secret injection or a managed secret store.

Limit what each credential can do

  • Issue separate credentials per application, environment and provider.
  • Grant only the operations and data access the application needs.
  • Set expiration, rotation and revocation procedures, and require stronger authentication for administrative access where supported.

Test the complete delivery path

Check the origin server, CDN, staging hosts, backups, container images and generated static assets—not just the main production URL. A file removed from one location can remain downloadable from a cached or alternate deployment.

How to interpret the headline safely

“Tens of thousands of websites vulnerable to data breaches” is a warning about a widespread configuration weakness, not a claim that tens of thousands of organizations were proven breached. The defensible facts are that Cybernews reported finding 58,364 unique websites with exposed secrets in 2024 and that public credentials can enable unauthorized access when they remain valid and sufficiently privileged. The cited sources do not measure the number of successful attacks or the current worldwide total.
