Telstra InfraCo lists its Sydney–Perth Direct route as ready for service as of September 2026. The company’s current route information does not state when that route launched, give its exact distance, or confirm that it is Aura Network’s longest route. Aura is Telstra’s intercity fibre backbone, serving business and infrastructure customers rather than consumer broadband subscribers.
Is Telstra’s Perth–Sydney Aura route ready for service?
Yes. Telstra InfraCo’s September 2026 route listing includes Sydney–Perth Direct among Aura Network routes ready for service. The same list includes Sydney–Canberra–Melbourne Coastal, Sydney–Canberra Central and Adelaide–Wilmington Direct. Telstra InfraCo’s route information establishes service status, but it does not supply a route-specific public launch date.
The wording “Direct” is a route name, not evidence of a particular distance or ranking. The available route information does not establish that Sydney–Perth Direct is Aura’s longest route.
What is Telstra’s Aura Network?
Aura Network is the name Telstra InfraCo uses for its national intercity fibre backbone, previously called the Intercity Fibre Network. Telstra announced the Sydney–Melbourne coastal route under the Aura name on 21 October 2025. At that time, the company described the network as spanning more than 5,000 kilometres, with a plan to extend it to nearly 14,000 kilometres over the following years. Those figures describe Telstra’s reported and planned network-wide scale, not the length of the Sydney–Perth route. Telstra’s Aura Network announcement

How the network is designed
Telstra describes two broad path types, with different roles in the backbone:
- Express: Uses Corning SMF-28 ULL ultra-low-loss fibre with Advanced Bend fibre for high-bandwidth links between capital cities and international submarine-cable landing stations.
- Foundation: Uses Prysmian BBA2-LL low-loss fibre to upgrade links between capitals and improve access to regional Australia.
Telstra says its network map is approximate; rollout paths and kilometres may change and be phased. Its network page also associates Perth and Sydney with data-centre, satellite-ground-station or teleport, and subsea-connection infrastructure, but those map details do not establish the exact path or length of the Sydney–Perth Direct route. What Aura services are available to customers?
Aura is a wholesale and enterprise network, not a consumer home-broadband plan. Telstra lists three service types for businesses and infrastructure customers such as enterprises, hyperscalers, government, carriers and service providers. Availability depends on route feasibility and approval. Telstra InfraCo’s Aura Network brochure

| Service | How it works | Control and capacity profile |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength | Managed point-to-point connectivity, available in capacity increments. | Telstra-managed; suited to customers seeking a managed connection. |
| Direct Spectrum | Customer acquires a portion of a fibre pair and can scale by adding spectrum. | More customer control; requires compatible customer equipment. |
| Dark Fibre | Customer-managed fibre connection. | Greatest capacity and control; requires suitable customer equipment. |
Telstra’s brochure distinguishes protected and unprotected service options and notes that some resilience options are still under construction. Its stated availability targets are not guarantees of actual availability. Customers should confirm the specific route, equipment requirements, protection options and service terms with Telstra rather than assume all options apply to Sydney–Perth.

What published capacity figures do—and don’t—show
Telstra InfraCo has cited more than 83 Tbps per fibre pair for the Sydney–Melbourne ULL Express link, based on a desktop simulation conducted in May 2024 and repeated in later Telstra material. It is not a measured speed for Sydney–Perth, nor a universal live-service rate; Telstra’s brochure says actual bandwidth varies with customer equipment and route. Telstra InfraCo’s network article Aura Network brochure
Other figures relate to different evidence and corridors. In May 2025, Telstra forecast data-demand growth of more than 30 percent year on year through 2031; that was a forecast, not a measured result. In September 2026, Ciena described a Melbourne–Sydney transmission trial spanning approximately 1,100 kilometres: Telstra transported four 400GbE client services over one wavelength without regeneration using L-band on a live production network. That trial was not on the Perth–Sydney route. Telstra’s May 2025 release Ciena’s September 2026 announcement

What to verify before treating the route as a business option
- Whether Telstra can provide service at the required endpoints and along the needed route.
- Which product fits the required bandwidth, scaling plans and level of operational control.
- Whether compatible customer equipment is needed, particularly for Direct Spectrum or Dark Fibre.
- Which protection and resilience options are available on that route, and what the service terms actually guarantee.
Telstra identifies Microsoft as a foundation partner using Aura routes for AI services, and names Ciena as a technology collaborator. These relationships provide context for the network’s business and technical role; they do not mean that Aura is a retail broadband service or that a particular service is available on every route.
