MobileSyrup reported that TELUS and Koodo rolled out $70 connection fees during the week of Aug. 24–30, 2024, and said the charges might be prohibited under the Telecommunications Act. That was a reported concern—not a court ruling or a CRTC finding that the fees were unlawful.
What did TELUS and Koodo change?
In its Aug. 31, 2024 roundup, MobileSyrup reported that TELUS and Koodo followed Rogers in rolling out $70 connection fees. The available report does not specify when the fees applied, whether customers could have them waived, or which customers or transactions were eligible. It characterized the fees as potentially conflicting with the Telecommunications Act, but did not establish a final legal determination. Cell-service funding and a Yukon complaint appeal
MobileSyrup reported that the CRTC announced funding to improve cell service across Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland, without giving project names, award amounts, or coverage estimates in the excerpt. It also said Yukon’s premier urged residents to complain to the CRTC about Bell service. That is a report of the premier’s appeal, not an independent measurement of Bell’s service quality.
Starlink emergency-service proposal
The roundup reported that Elon Musk proposed free global satellite emergency services through Starlink. It did not establish that the service had launched, where it was available, or what technical capabilities it would offer.

What happened later with carrier fees?
In a separate development nearly two years later, the CRTC’s June 30, 2026 Telecom Notice of Consultation 2026-155 said protections against activation and modification fees, established by Telecom Regulatory Policy 2026-43 and section 27.04 of the Telecommunications Act, took effect June 12, 2026. The notice opened a show-cause proceeding concerning later fees introduced by Bell, TELUS, and Rogers. This later proceeding does not determine whether TELUS’s or Koodo’s reported $70 connection fees in 2024 were lawful.
