A 16-year-old hiker was rescued by helicopter after getting stranded on steep climbing terrain while trying to reach Crown Mountain from Grouse Mountain in British Columbia. The route was reportedly intended to take him through a gully, but he ended up on the Widowmaker climbing route. The incident is a reminder to verify any AI-generated route against authoritative maps, local conditions, and your own experience—not proof that every AI route is wrong.
What happened on the Crown Mountain hike?
The teenager set out alone from Grouse Mountain at about 8 a.m., aiming for Crown Mountain. North Shore Rescue received a call shortly before 3:30 p.m. after he became stranded on steep terrain. The planned route was reportedly meant to pass through a gully; instead, he was at the base of the final headwall on the Widowmaker, a climbing route.
North Shore Rescue described the hiker as having somehow gotten far off the Crown hiking route, while saying it was unclear exactly where or how he left it. Two rescue technicians were lowered from a helicopter and hoisted him to safety. The operation ended shortly before 6:30 p.m.; reports said he was frightened but rescued safely. Gizmodo’s October 5 account and North Shore News reporting republished by Castanet describe the incident.
Which AI tool planned the route?
The answer depends on when the report appeared. Gizmodo’s October 5 story said it was unclear which AI tool the teenager had used. A later CTV News report attributed the directions to Claude, citing North Shore Rescue search manager Paul Markey. The earlier story did not name Claude, so the attribution should be understood as information added in later coverage.

CTV also reported Markey’s warning that Claude had not been in the area or on the route, and that hikers should research the area and build their knowledge alongside training and navigation. That is Markey’s reported characterization, not evidence about the teenager’s exact AI conversation or how the route was generated.
Can you trust AI to plan a hiking route?
Use AI, if at all, as an assistant for questions—not as the authority that decides where you walk. A conversational tool can describe a route, but its answer does not establish that a line is an open, maintained hiking trail or that it is suitable for your abilities and current conditions. In this incident, the reporting establishes a consequential mismatch between an intended hiking route and steep climbing terrain; it does not establish precisely how the hiker got off course.

Pay attention to terrain descriptions and exposed or technical sections.
- Map and local information: Compare the route with reliable mapping and local sources. Markey named Gaia GPS, CalTopo, and AllTrails as examples of navigation tools, but no app guarantees that a route is safe, current, or appropriate.
- Your ability: Match distance, elevation, terrain, and technical demands to your experience, fitness, equipment, and the abilities of everyone in your group.
- Conditions and access: Check the forecast and current terrain or access information. A route that is reasonable in one set of conditions may not be safe in another.
- Navigation and communication: Carry and know how to use suitable navigation and communication equipment; do not rely on a chatbot or a single device as your only source of route information.
North Shore Rescue’s recommendation was direct: “Be cautious when getting routes and information suggested through AI.” Markey also said, “You can’t just blindly follow what AI is proposing to you. You need to question the information and just see whether it makes sense or not.” Gizmodo reported both statements.

How to prepare before setting out
Official outdoor-safety advice focuses on planning, training, and taking essentials—not on any one app or gadget. AdventureSmart calls these the Three Ts. Its guidance, along with recommendations from North Shore Rescue and Parks Canada, supports a practical pre-trip routine:
- Choose a suitable route. Review the terrain, conditions, weather, and access information, and choose a trip that fits the group’s ability.
- Leave a trip plan. Tell a reliable person your route, group, start and turnaround times, and expected return. Agree on what they should do if you do not check in.
- Bring and practice with essentials. Carry appropriate navigation and communication devices and other essentials for the trip, and know how to use your equipment before you need it.
- Build relevant skills. Learn basic navigation and first aid, and train for the terrain and conditions you expect.
These are general safety recommendations, not facts established about the teenager’s preparation. The reports do not say whether he carried a map, compass, or other particular equipment, and they do not establish that any one item would have prevented the rescue.
