Most SU-CH7 problems are not one universal component failure. Standby, clicking off, intermittent audio and no sound can come from speaker shorts, the SC-CH7 system’s proprietary interconnects, protection circuitry, a failing standby supply, relay faults or a damaged output stage. Start with the rear power switch, correct system wiring and speaker isolation. If the unit is unusually hot, flickers, smells burnt or needs minutes connected to mains before starting, unplug it and arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly cycling the power.
Identify what you have
The SU-CH7 is the amplifier section of the interconnected Panasonic/Technics SC-CH7 system, not a conventional stand-alone integrated amplifier. The normal system comprises:
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| SU-CH7 | Amplifier |
| ST-CH7L | Tuner and control unit |
| SL-CH7 | CD player |
| RS-CH7 | Cassette deck |
| SB-CH7 | Matching speakers |
The service documentation warns that the unique cables and system arrangement matter during servicing. Use the exact manual for your model suffix, region and board revision: factory service information, alternate scan or alternate download.

Verify the rating plate before applying power. The same material reports about 17 W standby consumption, so slight warmth can be normal; heat accompanied by odor, flicker or increasing temperature is not.

Match the symptom to the safest first check
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Stays in standby | Rear switch, tuner-to-amplifier control cable, connectors and standby supply |
| Clicks and shuts off | Speaker shorts, impedance, protection operation and possible DC/output-stage fault |
| Displays work but no sound | Input, mute, volume, speaker wiring, relay and signal path |
| Cuts out during playback | Protection, overheating, intermittent connector or failing supply |
| One channel or frequency section missing | Cable, fuse, relay contact, output stage, speaker or bi-amp connection |
| Starts only after minutes connected | Standby/control supply, capacitors, rectifier, regulator, relay drive or solder joints |
| Flickering display | Supply ripple, rectifier/regulator, connector or grounding fault |
| Burning smell, smoke or discoloration | Disconnect mains immediately |
Safety first
- Unplug the system immediately for burning odor, smoke, arcing, rapidly rising temperature, repeated relay chatter, melted connectors, a blown fuse, visible capacitor leakage or a mains-voltage mismatch.
- Do not defeat the protection relay, short a control line or copy an internet jumper modification. Such changes can remove intended protection and create shock, fire or speaker-damage hazards.
- Stored power-supply capacitors can remain dangerous after unplugging. Internal work requires isolation equipment, current limiting, insulated tools and appropriate measurement skill.
External checks that require no opening
1. Confirm the rear power switch
- Unplug the system.
- Set the SU-CH7 rear power switch to ON.
- Reconnect mains and use the normal standby/on control, generally on the tuner/control unit.
- Stop if it clicks off, overheats or smells abnormal.
Panasonic’s owner troubleshooting specifically identifies the rear switch and speaker reconnection as checks for a unit that will not turn on or has no sound: owner manual troubleshooting.
2. Reseat the complete interconnect chain
- Photograph every connection before removal.
- Unplug mains, then reseat each original plug and flat cable.
- Look for bent, recessed, oxidized, cracked or blackened contacts.
- Use only the correct system cables; do not substitute ordinary audio leads for proprietary control or power cables.
- Test a known-good original configuration. A missing RS-CH7 deck or an improvised bypass may alter control routing; reports of partial-system operation are inconsistent and are not factory approval.
Moving a cable changes the symptom, or a flickering display follows connector movement, strongly suggests a contact, solder or wiring problem. A repair archive documents varied SC-CH7 cases but is not a substitute for the schematic: repair archive.
3. Isolate the speakers
- With mains disconnected, remove both speaker connections.
- Check for stray strands, crushed insulation or a conductor touching the other terminal or chassis.
- Confirm the original SB-CH7 connectors and arrangement.
- Try a startup with speakers disconnected, then reconnect one known-good connection at a time.
The service manual says protection can operate for shorted speaker wires or speakers below the rated impedance. If the amplifier still remains in standby or clicks off with speakers removed, an internal power, control or amplifier fault becomes more likely.
Bi-amp connection warning
Owner and repair discussions describe separate high- and low-frequency connections on the matching speakers. Do not bridge those terminals, join output sections, attach one section to an unrelated amplifier output or connect conventional speakers without tracing the original crossover and wiring. A related discussion is available at owner discussion.

What a protection shutdown means
The relay and protection circuit respond to an abnormal condition; a click does not prove the relay itself is bad. Possible triggers include a speaker short, excessive load, DC at an output, overheating, abnormal supply voltage or a fault in sensing and relay-drive circuitry.
- One trip after a wiring mistake: correct the wiring, switch fully off, then retry once.
- Repeated click-off at every startup: leave speakers disconnected and stop repeated testing.
- Shutdown only at high volume: suspect overload, overheating, speaker trouble or a weakening output stage.
- Shutdown with no speakers connected: suspect internal supply, control, protection or output-stage failure.
The factory procedure is to switch off, correct the cause and switch on again; protection may require that complete power cycle before operation returns. See the service manual at manuals.plus.
Delayed startup, warmth and flickering displays
A unit that starts only after being connected for minutes, especially after being unplugged for hours, deserves priority attention. An owner report describes delayed standby release, relay clicking, display flicker, standby warmth and a mild burning smell: reported case. That account is anecdotal and does not identify one universal failed part.
Technician-level possibilities include aged electrolytic capacitors, rectifier leakage or failure, a regulator, startup or fusible resistor, high-resistance solder joint, relay-drive fault, excessive load on a standby rail, damaged connector or incorrect mains configuration. Leaving the unit permanently plugged in may keep a marginal capacitor charged; it is not a repair. Delay plus burning odor, relay chatter or flicker means unplug it.

No sound when the display works
A lit display proves only that some control and display circuits operate. Check the selected input, mute state, volume and another known-good source. Inspect speakers and listen for the protection relay. If available, compare headphone output with speaker output.
- Headphones work, speakers do not: investigate relay contacts, speaker wiring and output connections.
- Headphones and speakers are both silent: investigate muting, signal path, control supply or a common amplifier-stage fault.
- Only one frequency section is absent: inspect the relevant connector, fuse, output IC/channel, relay contact, speaker driver and bi-amp wiring.
- Sound changes when controls or cables move: suspect switches, connectors or solder joints; dirty controls do not explain a hot, odorous unit that cannot leave standby.
The service documentation separates input/output, equalizer, operation, power-control, headphone/microphone, main amplifier and power-supply circuits, so “no sound” must be localized rather than assigned to one part.
Technician-level diagnosis
Only a competent mains technician should open the chassis. The service instructions call for discharging specified capacitors C703 and C704 with a 10 Ω, 5 W resistor, slowly raising primary voltage after repair and checking no-signal current. Their approximate service-test ranges are 160–480 mA at 120 V and 85–255 mA at 240 V. These are not consumer troubleshooting shortcuts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using the correct regional schematic, a technician may check standby and main rails, AC ripple, regulator and transformer-secondary voltages, power-on/control timing, relay-coil voltage, fuse and fusible-resistor continuity, protection-sense points and DC offset at amplifier outputs. Do not short the relay or apply mains to an unknown transformer tap. Match model suffix, region, board number, transformer configuration and connector layout before substituting an IC or transistor.

Likely fault categories
Standby or power supply
Best fit for delayed startup, flicker, relay chatter, unusual standby heat or improvement after remaining connected. Capacitor replacement may help only after measurements distinguish it from rectifier, regulator, wiring or control faults.
Output stage
Best fit for immediate protection, DC at an output, one missing section or protection with speakers disconnected. Protection behavior alone does not prove an output IC has failed.
Relay, fuse, connector or solder joint
Best fit for intermittent operation, one section missing, cable-sensitive symptoms or no speaker output with otherwise normal controls. Test fuses unplugged and replace only with the specified rating.
Mains, missing parts and speaker compatibility
Regional versions exist. A 220–240 V model must not be connected directly to 120 V, and a 120 V model must not be connected directly to 230 V. Transformer taps and wiring can differ.

Do not assume the amplifier is reliable without the tuner, cassette deck or original cables. Conversely, do not state that the cassette deck is universally mandatory: owner reports conflict, and a modified bypass may defeat control or protection functions.
The 6 Ω rating applies to the designed system load, not arbitrary low-impedance speakers. SB-CH7 speakers should not be connected to a modern amplifier until their high/low wiring and crossover arrangement are verified.
Repair, replace or repurpose?
| Choice | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Repair | Complete system, matching speakers, sound cabinet, localized fault, qualified technician and acceptable labor cost |
| Replace | Severe heat or carbon damage, missing proprietary cables, multiple missing modules, unavailable output parts or labor above replacement cost |
| Repurpose | Only after the speaker crossover and separate-output wiring are documented; never assume ordinary single-output operation |
If buying a donor, a complete tested SC-CH7 with matching speakers, all cables and a return option is safer than an amplifier-only listing that merely “powers on.” Technicians can consult reputable parts distributors such as Digi-Key, Mouser or Newark, but every part must match the exact schematic and safety rating. Owners who do not work on mains equipment can ask about current support through Technics support; legacy SU-CH7 service availability is not guaranteed.
