A short-notice work trip to China went badly before its first meeting: UK-based tech worker “Carson” says a wasp stung him three times, he was refused entry in Shanghai because he lacked a visa, and he later sat through a meeting that ran from about 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The account appeared in The Register’s October 2, 2026, On Call column. It is a reader’s anecdote, not an independently verified account or guide to Chinese entry rules.
How the trip went off course
A painful start
Carson told The Register that a wasp got into his jeans before departure and stung him three times. He described his thigh as swollen and throbbing during the long flight. The account does not report a diagnosis or treatment.
Refused entry in Shanghai
Carson said his employer sent him on short notice without first securing the necessary visa. On arrival in Shanghai, he says he was denied entry for lacking a visa and escorted by police. The Register reported that he was told to pay a fine equivalent to $247; Carson said he had to exchange $250 in banknotes. His employer arranged a hotel, and he was sent back to Hong Kong.
Those amounts and events are part of Carson’s reported experience. They do not establish the legal basis for the fine, what normally happens to travelers in similar circumstances, or current Chinese visa requirements.

The visa arrived mid-expulsion
Carson said the visa came through while he was being expelled. He later flew back to Shanghai and continued to the city where the bid team was meeting. In The Register’s account, he recalled: “I was, indeed, met at Shanghai Airport, airside.”
The meeting that followed
The final stretch was no gentle recovery from the detour. Carson said the meeting with a team representing a state organization began at 9 a.m. and ended at about 10 p.m. He gave a 15-minute presentation; most of the meeting was in Mandarin.

What the story does—and does not—show
It is a vivid example of how a rushed business request and unfinished travel arrangements can turn a work visit into a chain of avoidable complications. Its practical lesson is straightforward: confirm the required travel authorization before departure. The anecdote does not identify which visa was required, explain the applicable rules, or support general claims about fines or police procedures.
