Electronic Design reported on October 8, 2008, that Tecate Industries’ PowerBurst PBL, PBLL, TPL, and TPLS product lines had received UL 810A recognition. The announcement is historical: it identifies particular product families and does not establish that any model remains listed or available today. UL 810A’s cited North American requirement applies to electrochemical-capacitor modules in a specified product-safety context—not automatically to every standalone supercapacitor cell.
Which Tecate PowerBurst products were named?
The 2008 Electronic Design announcement named two product groupings: 5.4-V PBL/PBLL modules and cylindrical 2.7-V TPL/TPLS cells. The report’s figures below describe the products at that time; they are not current specifications, quotes, or independently repeated test results. Electronic Design’s October 8, 2008 announcement.
| Product grouping | Voltage and form | Capacitance reported | Package and lead details |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBL | 5.4-V radial-leaded module | 0.25 F to 15.0 F | Package sizes from 18.0 × 9.0 × 16.0 mm to 37.0 × 35.0 × 17.5 mm |
| PBLL | 5.4-V module with flexible leads and a JST ZHR-2 quick connector | 0.25 F to 15.0 F | Package sizes reported for PBL/PBLL together: 18.0 × 9.0 × 16.0 mm to 37.0 × 35.0 × 17.5 mm |
| TPL/TPLS | 2.7-V cylindrical cells with snap-in leads | 0.5 F to 400 F | Sizes from 8 mm diameter × 12 mm length to 35 mm diameter × 60 mm length |
Electronic Design also reported an operating range of −40°C to 65°C, 500,000 charge/discharge cycles, and low equivalent series resistance as a performance attribute. Those are historical product claims in the announcement, not a guarantee for a part currently offered under the same family name.

What does UL 810A recognition cover?
UL Solutions uses electrochemical capacitor as the formal term for a component also called an electric double-layer capacitor, ultracapacitor, or supercapacitor. In its guidance on the North American national difference to CSA UL 62368-1, UL Solutions says electrochemical-capacitor modules must comply with UL 810A. It defines a module as “A single or multiple series and/or parallel-connected, electrochemical capacitors with associated circuitry.” UL Solutions guidance on electrochemical capacitors and UL 810A.
#1 Best Overall
- Maxwell super capacitor 16V 1000F
- High Power density: up 6700w/kg
- Low ESR: can be used as a rechargeable battery and ideal for back up purposes
- Quick charge: charging 10 seconds to 10 minutes to reach its rated capacity of more than 95%
- long life: up to 8 million to 120 million cycles
The distinction matters: the cited requirement is directed at modules, where the additive energy of connected capacitors can increase explosion risk. It does not impose that specific module requirement on every individual capacitor used outside a module. Whether a component or assembly needs evaluation depends on how it is used and the applicable end-product standard.
Does a recognized module eliminate end-product safety testing?
No. Component recognition does not certify the complete equipment design. UL Solutions notes that modules can undergo further evaluation in the end product, including normal, abnormal, and single-fault testing—for example, checks of overcharge protection. Designers still need to assess the complete product, its circuitry, installation, and foreseeable fault conditions under the applicable requirements.

How can you verify a model’s current recognition?
- Search UL Product iQ, UL Solutions’ directory, for the exact manufacturer and model number—not just “PowerBurst,” PBL, or TPL.
- Compare the directory record and product markings with the specific part and configuration you intend to use. A family name or an old announcement alone does not confirm a current recognition record.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized supplier to confirm present availability and the exact model identity. Separately determine what evaluation the finished product requires.
UL Solutions recommends Product iQ for verifying recognition records and markings. Current recognition and stock status for the Tecate models named in the 2008 report are not established by that report.
Can you still buy the Tecate PBL or TPL parts?
The 2008 announcement cannot answer whether these parts are sold today. It recorded historical 1,000-piece pricing of $2.19–$8.29 for PBL/PBLL and $0.84–$24.00 for TPL/TPLS, with delivery reported as from stock to six to eight weeks. These figures are period-specific and should not be treated as current prices or lead times. Check with Tecate or an authorized supplier for current availability, and verify any offered model’s UL Product iQ record before relying on a certification claim.

What to compare when choosing an ultracapacitor
When comparing a cell with a module or evaluating replacements, check the application’s requirements rather than relying on the family name or capacitance alone:
