A UGREEN USB-C cable rated for 240W contains more than a screen: its teardown revealed a tiny IPS LCD, voltage regulators, a backlight MOSFET and an EN32LF056 microcontroller. The display shows reported voltage and current, while the MCU’s wiring limits it to measurement rather than USB communication. The cable can be opened, but the glued, compact assembly is not designed for routine service.

What the teardown found inside the cable

In an October 2, 2026 report, Maya Posch at Hackaday described Aaron Christophel’s teardown of a UGREEN USB-C cable rated at 240W. At the time of that report, the cable was priced at €15; that is a dated price, not a current or universally available price. Hackaday’s teardown identified these main parts:

  • Display: a tiny IPS LCD connected to the board with a flat-flex cable and connector.
  • Controller: an MCU marked EN32LF056. Probing its exposed SWD interface identified a Cortex-M0+ with 64 kB of Flash and 4 kB of SRAM.
  • Power and lighting circuitry: multiple voltage regulators and a MOSFET that controls the display backlight.
  • Measurement function: the MCU is wired to measure current and voltage, which the screen reports. A single touch control lets the user view those readings.

The teardown establishes what this particular cable’s display and control electronics do; it does not establish that the screen is a general-purpose USB monitor or that the cable’s readings have been independently validated against test equipment.

How the cable is opened—and why it is difficult

The display end is enclosed in a compact assembly that is not intended for regular repair. The documented teardown began by attacking the display cover, then removing the aluminium shell. The report says the assembly may use substantial glue; Christophel used side-cutters to remove the shell. This is destructive disassembly, not a routine way to access or service the cable.

Once open, the flat-flex connection between the LCD and PCB and the small board components become visible. The Hackaday report does not provide a repeatable, non-destructive opening procedure, so it would be misleading to treat the SWD pads as readily accessible without damaging the enclosure.

Can the display firmware be reflashed?

The MCU’s exposed SWD interface offers a possible route to custom firmware experiments, but it is not a documented plug-and-play modification. The teardown found that the MCU is wired to voltage and current measurement and cannot use the USB interface. Accessing the debug pads would require opening the display connector assembly far enough to reach them; the report describes that as a potential experiment, not a verified firmware replacement procedure.

In practical terms, a reflash would require suitable SWD access and knowledge of the MCU and board. The teardown does not establish the required programmer, pinout, firmware image, write protection status, or a tested recovery method. An attempted modification could leave the display unusable, and the glued enclosure makes access itself risky.

What this teardown does—and does not—tell you

This is an examination of one UGREEN LCD-equipped cable, not a comparative test of display cables. It identifies the screen, MCU, memory capacity, measurement wiring and difficult enclosure, but does not establish how the cable performs across different chargers, devices or USB data-transfer tasks.

When assessing a display-equipped USB-C cable, distinguish its advertised maximum power rating from the functions demonstrated by its display. Relevant questions include whether the screen reports live voltage and current or only animations, whether the cable supports data transfer, how serviceable the enclosure is, and whether debug pads are exposed. The teardown answers some of those questions for the examined UGREEN cable; it does not supply a model-by-model comparison.
