TCL CSOT says its inkjet-printed OLED process can reduce manufacturing costs compared with conventional fine-metal-mask (FMM) OLED. Its May 2024 claim was a 30% lower unit cost; TrendForce estimated about 25% lower production costs for printed OLED versus comparable evaporation processes in June 2025. Neither figure means a finished Samsung, LG, or TCL display will be 25–30% cheaper at retail. The potential advantage depends on manufacturing yield, reliability, and how successfully production scales.
What is TCL’s inkjet-printed OLED?
Inkjet-printed OLED, or IJP OLED, changes how a display’s organic light-emitting materials are deposited. Conventional FMM OLED production evaporates those materials in a vacuum and deposits them through fine metal masks. TCL CSOT’s approach prints the materials precisely onto the display substrate, avoiding the fine metal mask and reducing reliance on expensive vacuum chambers.
TCL says printing can make production more flexible across screen sizes and resolutions and reduce wasted material. TrendForce described printed OLED as “designed to eliminate the need for FMM and vacuum environments,” while also noting that yield and reliability remain manufacturing challenges. The process distinction is meaningful, but it does not by itself establish the final cost or quality of a retail display.

How big is the claimed cost advantage?
The headline figures come from different sources and describe manufacturing costs, not prices consumers pay. They should be treated as separate claims rather than combined into one verified saving.
#1 Best Overall

| Figure | Who reported it | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| 30% lower unit cost | TCL CSOT, May 2024 | The company’s claimed unit-cost reduction versus FMM OLED; not an independently verified retail-price reduction. |
| About 25% lower production costs | TrendForce, June 2025 | An industry estimate for printed OLED versus comparable evaporation processes; not TCL’s 30% claim or a finished-product price comparison. |
| Over 90% material utilization | TCL CSOT, May 2024 | The company’s reported material-utilization figure for its process. |
| 90% less need for expensive vacuum chambers | TCL CSOT, May 2024 | The company’s reported reduction in vacuum-chamber requirements. |
These figures do not show that an IJP OLED television or monitor will cost less than a Samsung or LG model. Manufacturing savings are only one input to a finished product’s price, and the cited figures are not direct, audited cost comparisons with each competitor’s panel. Yield, production volume, product design, and other costs also matter.
Is TCL’s printed OLED already in production?
Initial mass production and specialist displays
TCL CSOT announced official IJP OLED mass production in November 2024. Its first mass-produced product was a 21.6-inch 4K professional display, aimed at specialist display use rather than ordinary television buyers. The same announcement also discussed a separate 14-inch IJP QD-EL display. QD-EL is related to printed-display development, but it is not the IJP OLED product.

Wuhan production and the larger t8 project
In May 2026, TCL CSOT said its Wuhan Gen 5.5 IJP OLED line had achieved mass production and product delivery. The company also reported that its Gen 8.6 t8 factory had reached structural topping-out. Finishing work, power installation, and equipment installation were still to come at that milestone.
TCL described t8 as designed for monthly capacity of 22,500 glass substrates, with planned investment of US$4.34 billion (RMB 29.5 billion). Those are project specifications, not evidence that the factory had completed installation or reached that capacity in May 2026.

A 27-inch monitor has been announced
On September 23, 2026, TCL CSOT announced the Lenovo ThinkVision P27UL-40, a professional monitor using IJP OLED. The announcement describes a 27-inch UHD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and names Lenovo as the device maker. It does not establish a retail price or confirm that the monitor is available to buy.
What about image quality, power use, and durability?
TCL CSOT reported in 2024 that its IJP OLED design exceeded 300 pixels per inch (PPI), used a side-by-side RGB stripe layout, and could match FMM OLED power consumption. The company also said the design was intended to deliver longer service life, attributing image-quality and efficiency benefits to material use and optical design. These are manufacturer claims, not independent test results for a finished retail monitor.

In June 2025, TrendForce reported that printed OLED panels had reached 326 PPI, which it considered adequate for notebooks and monitors. Its analysis also identified yield, pixel density, and reliability as challenges, and said further work on materials and device structures was needed to improve durability and power efficiency. That is a dated assessment; it does not establish the capabilities of every later product.
Why target monitors and other mid-size screens?
Monitors, notebooks, tablets, and automotive screens are among the mid-size OLED applications TrendForce identified as expanding opportunities. Its June 2025 report forecast OLED monitor shipments would grow 80.6% year over year in 2025, with monitor penetration reaching 2% in 2025 and potentially 5% by 2028. These were forecasts published in 2025, not verified shipment or penetration results. They help explain why manufacturers may pursue professional and mid-size displays, but do not guarantee a specific product launch or price.
What should buyers conclude about Samsung, LG, and future TV prices?
TCL’s IJP OLED is a different manufacturing route that may improve panel-production economics if it can deliver good yields and reliable displays at scale. That is not the same as proving that TCL panels are already cheaper than specific Samsung or LG panels, nor does it guarantee lower monitor or television prices. The available product announcements show professional-display examples; they do not establish a future consumer-TV launch or a retail saving.
When comparing a printed-OLED product with an FMM OLED display, keep the comparisons on the same basis: manufacturing method and mask use, panel cost versus finished-device price, production scale and yield, resolution and subpixel layout, power and reliability, and actual availability. A process-cost estimate cannot substitute for a priced, independently tested retail product.
