Yes—TCL’s criticism has a credible technical basis, although its lawsuit has not been decided. Mini LED is generally understood as a backlight built from many small LEDs arranged in independently controlled zones, normally using full-array local dimming (FALD). TCL’s August 31, 2026 federal complaint alleges that Samsung’s M70H, M80H and M90H televisions use larger conventional LEDs and software dimming instead of that hardware architecture. Samsung disputes the characterization and says it stands behind its descriptions.
What TCL is challenging
TCL says Samsung marketed the M-series as Mini LED even though the sets lack the hardware improvements buyers commonly associate with the term. The complaint describes Mini LED backlights as using “dozens to thousands” of individually controllable LEDs or zones, enabling FALD, higher contrast and finer highlight control.
TCL’s filing says Mini LEDs are generally 0.1 to 0.3 millimeters and alleges that the M-series uses 0.5-millimeter LEDs mounted on two aluminum strips. It also alleges that the M-series lacks the control circuitry required for local dimming and was derived from Samsung’s Crystal UHD line. Those statements are allegations in a complaint, not court findings.
“Mini LEDs are a technological advancement in the television market that allow for a substantially better picture with greater dynamic range and higher contrast ratios.”

What Samsung says
Samsung’s buying guide defines Mini LED as using LEDs that are smaller and more densely packed than those in conventional LED televisions. It markets the 2026 M-series, including the M80H, as Mini LED and says the design improves brightness, contrast and light efficiency.
Tom’s Guide reported that an M70H specification footnote calls “Supreme Mini LED Dimming” software-based, rather than full-array hardware-based technology. A Samsung representative told the publication: “Samsung can confirm that both the QN70H and M70H support software-based Supreme Mini LED Dimming.” Samsung also said it would “vigorously defend against” the lawsuit and stands behind the quality and accuracy of its product descriptions.
Does Mini LED require full-array local dimming?
There is no industry organization with authority to define and enforce a universal Mini LED standard. That gives manufacturers room to set their own thresholds. However, display specialists commonly treat FALD as the defining practical feature.

Ars Technica quoted display expert Virey saying that FALD is “broadly agreed across the industry” to be a key and mandatory feature of Mini LED backlights. Expert Bob O’Brien described Mini LED as an improved form of FALD that provides more dimming zones. Under that widely used interpretation, a television can contain physically small LEDs yet fall short of what buyers expect from a full Mini LED implementation if it cannot independently dim zones across the panel.
Software dimming versus FALD
Hardware FALD
In a FALD television, LEDs behind the LCD panel are grouped into zones with dedicated control hardware. The television can reduce backlight output behind a dark part of the image while keeping a bright highlight elsewhere illuminated. More zones generally allow smaller, more precise adjustments, though zone count alone does not guarantee good processing or uniformity.
Software-based dimming
Software dimming can alter picture processing, brightness or broad backlight behavior without providing the same independently addressable hardware zones. It may improve the perceived image, but it does not automatically deliver FALD-level control over blooming, black levels or highlight gradation.

Why edge-lit designs matter
An edge-lit television places LEDs around the panel’s perimeter. Even when a manufacturer uses “Mini LED” to describe the small emitters, edge lighting normally provides less granular control than a full-array design with separately driven zones behind the screen. Buyers should therefore verify the backlight layout and zone control rather than relying on the label.

Reported test results support the importance of the underlying hardware, but they are model-specific and should not be generalized to every television carrying the Mini LED name.
| Television | Measured contrast | Test qualification | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung M80H | 6,440:1 | RTINGS measurement reported by Ars Technica, 2026 | RTINGS described dark-room scenes as washed out. |
| Samsung QN80H | 80,000:1 | RTINGS result after calibration, 2026 | The set uses individually addressable dimming zones. |
| TCL QM6K | 118,059:1 | RTINGS result after calibration, 2026 | Ars Technica noted that HDR performance remained limited despite the high contrast result. |
These figures are not an apples-to-apples ranking of all Mini LED televisions. Calibration, test method, firmware and viewing conditions affect results, and contrast does not by itself describe motion, color accuracy, blooming or gaming performance.

Is the Samsung M80H really Mini LED?
The most accurate answer depends on whether “Mini LED” means physically smaller LEDs or the established display-market meaning of a Mini LED FALD system. Samsung can point to its own broader definition and its use of smaller, denser emitters. TCL is relying on the narrower technical convention in which independently controlled full-array zones are essential.
Because Samsung’s published specification identifies the M80H’s dimming as software-based and TCL alleges the absence of FALD hardware, questioning the label is reasonable. It is not accurate, however, to state that a court has ruled Samsung’s description deceptive; no final ruling or settlement was identified as of October 3, 2026.

TCL QM6K or Samsung M80H?
Choose between these models by examining the implementation and measured performance, not the badge alone.
| Buying factor | TCL QM6K | Samsung M80H |
|---|---|---|
| Backlight architecture | Marketed as Mini LED; verify the current regional specification and local-dimming implementation. | Samsung markets it as Mini LED; the reported M-series footnote describes software-based Supreme Mini LED Dimming. |
| Independent contrast evidence | 118,059:1 after calibration in the RTINGS result reported by Ars Technica; HDR limitations were still noted. | 6,440:1 in the RTINGS result reported by Ars Technica; dark-room scenes were described as washed out. |
| Dimming-zone count | Not stated for the QM6K in the cited material. TCL advertises up to 1,500+ zones on the QM7 and up to 5,000+ on the QM8. | Not stated in the cited material. |
| Refresh rate and gaming features | Verify the exact size and regional specification. | Verify the exact size and regional specification. |
| Price and warranty | Not stated; check the current retailer and regional warranty. | Not stated; check the current retailer and regional warranty. |
The QM6K has the stronger cited contrast result, but that does not establish that it wins every category or every size. The M80H may still suit buyers who prioritize Samsung’s processing, interface or design, provided they understand that its advertised Mini LED label may not correspond to hardware FALD in the conventional sense.
How to verify a Mini LED television before buying
- Find the backlight description. Look specifically for “full-array local dimming,” “FALD” or “individually addressable zones.”
- Check whether dimming is hardware or software. A phrase such as “software-based dimming” does not establish hardware-controlled FALD.
- Look for a zone count, but do not treat it as a guarantee. Processing quality, zone size and transitions affect blooming and black uniformity.
- Read independent testing for the exact model and size. Check contrast, black uniformity, blooming, HDR peak brightness and highlight behavior.
- Confirm gaming specifications. Verify refresh rate, variable-refresh-rate support, input lag and HDMI features for the particular regional model.
- Check the current warranty and price. These vary by country, retailer, screen size and promotion.
Where the legal dispute stands
TCL’s complaint is a pending accusation, not an adjudicated definition of Mini LED. Samsung disputes the claim and says its descriptions are accurate. Until a court rules or an industry body establishes a binding standard, the practical lesson is to treat “Mini LED” as a starting point for checking the actual backlight design, local-dimming hardware and independent measurements.
