The TCL 85C8L is an 85-inch 4K Google TV built around TCL’s SQD-Mini LED technology. On paper, its combination of a manufacturer-rated 3,200 local-dimming zones, peak brightness of up to 6,000 nits, and four HDMI 2.1 inputs makes it a compelling large-screen option for bright rooms and gaming. Those are TCL specifications, not independent measurements, and the available reviews do not establish how the exact regional 85-inch model performs in a controlled test. Its appeal therefore rests on strong published features—and on verifying local specifications, price, and viewing conditions before buying.
What is the TCL 85C8L?
The 85C8L is the 85-inch version of TCL’s C8L SQD-Mini LED television family. TCL lists 4K resolution and Google TV for the family. Mini LED uses many small backlights divided into local-dimming zones, which can brighten highlights while dimming parts of the screen for darker scenes. The 85-inch model’s zone count is substantial on paper, but a zone count alone does not establish black level or blooming performance; those also depend on dimming control, content, and where you sit.
Specifications and included features can vary by market. TCL says specifications may change and some features may require a software update. Check the product page and documentation for the exact country and model you intend to buy: TCL’s 85C8L product page and TCL Australia’s C8L specification sheet.

Brightness and dimming
TCL Australia’s specification sheet lists up to 6,000 nits peak brightness and 3,200 local-dimming zones for the 85-inch model. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently measured results. TCL Europe’s 2026 announcement gives a maximum of up to 4,032 zones for the C8L range; that range maximum should not be assigned to the 85-inch set. The Australia sheet, rather than the range headline, is the source for the 85C8L’s 3,200-zone figure.

High peak brightness can help HDR highlights stand out and may be useful in a bright room, but the published figure does not tell you how bright the TV sustains a full scene or how accurately it renders highlights in real viewing. Likewise, more dimming zones can help control the backlight, but they do not eliminate halos around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Viewing angle matters: a large TV viewed from seats far to the side can show different blooming and contrast than it does straight on.
What independent coverage establishes
What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 CES hands-on preview reported strong brightness, apparent color volume and detail, and little blooming when viewed straight on, with some blooming from off-axis positions. It also noted that specification information was limited at CES. These are early impressions, not a completed test of a retail 85-inch set.
TechRadar’s May 2026 UK coverage reports favorable findings from weeks testing the US QM8L, which the article describes as equivalent to the UK C8L. That evidence is relevant to the family’s technology, but does not prove identical performance, firmware, ports, tuners, or calibration on every regional 85C8L.

Gaming, HDR, and smart-TV features
TCL Australia lists the following features for the C8L specification sheet. Confirm their availability on the exact regional set and firmware before relying on them:
| Feature | What TCL Australia lists | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Four HDMI 2.1 ports | Provides modern connectivity for consoles and other devices; check the local model’s port capabilities and any shared limitations. |
| Refresh and gaming | 4K 144Hz VRR, ALLM, and FreeSync Premium Pro | Relevant to compatible gaming PCs and consoles. Actual frame rates depend on the source device, game, connection, and settings. |
| HDR formats | HDR10+ and Dolby Vision IQ | Offers support for two HDR formats, but the format used depends on the content and source device. |
| Smart platform | Google TV | Provides the TV’s smart-TV interface and apps; availability can depend on country and software version. |
These are the Australia sheet’s claims, not a guarantee that every country’s model exposes every function in the same way. Check the local manual and retailer listing, especially if your setup depends on a particular HDMI mode, VRR feature, or HDR format.
Sound and installation
TCL Australia lists Dolby Atmos and Bang & Olufsen audio for the C8L. This describes the integrated sound system; it does not establish that its sound will satisfy every room or listener, or replace a separate sound system in every setup.

The same Australian sheet says the wall bracket is not included and provides a VESA mount section. Before choosing a mount, verify the exact regional television’s VESA pattern and weight, the mount’s rated capacity, and whether the wall can support the combined load. An 85-inch screen also needs enough clearance for its dimensions, cables, ventilation, and viewing distance.
How it compares with OLED and other Mini LED TVs
The available material does not provide controlled head-to-head measurements of the exact 85C8L against a competing OLED or Mini LED set. Compare the models you can actually buy locally on the points that affect your room and use:
- Bright-room viewing: Look for independently measured brightness under comparable test conditions, rather than comparing manufacturer peak claims alone.
- Dark scenes: Check black level and blooming from both straight-on and side seats. OLED and Mini LED use different approaches, so the relevant question is how each performs in your viewing position.
- Bright colors and HDR: Compare color performance at high brightness as well as supported HDR formats.
- Gaming: Match refresh rate, variable refresh rate, input support, and the number of suitable ports to your devices.
- Practical ownership: Compare screen size, smart-TV apps, local price, warranty, delivery, and service availability—not just headline specifications.
Who should consider the TCL 85C8L?
The 85C8L is worth shortlisting if you want a very large 4K screen, use a bright room, or need a feature-rich gaming connection. Its published 85-inch specifications are especially attractive on paper. It is less straightforward to recommend if your decision depends on verified dark-room performance, off-axis blooming, or a direct comparison with an OLED: the available independent evidence is preliminary or based on the US QM8L rather than a controlled test of your exact regional 85C8L.
Before committing, confirm that the local model includes the features you need, check the current price and warranty in your market, and look for a review that identifies the same size and regional version. If possible, view the TV from your usual seats and with the kinds of scenes you watch most.
