No: Taylor Swift had not endorsed Donald Trump when he shared images suggesting she supported him in August 2024. After the images drew attention to the risk of AI-generated political misinformation, Swift addressed them on September 10 and endorsed Kamala Harris.
What happened with the Taylor Swift Trump images?
On August 18, 2024, Donald Trump shared a collage on Truth Social that included an image of Swift in an Uncle Sam-style outfit beside the words “TAYLOR WANTS YOU TO VOTE FOR DONALD TRUMP.” Lead Stories found no evidence that Swift had endorsed Trump at the time and reported that the image appeared to be AI-generated. Lead Stories’ fact check addresses the false endorsement claim.
The collage also included images of women wearing “Swifties for Trump” shirts. The Washington Post described those images as AI-generated, but Lead Stories noted that at least one pictured supporter was a real person. It is therefore more accurate to say the collage included apparently fabricated imagery than to claim that every person or image in it was fake.

The documented act was Trump sharing the images. The cited reporting does not establish that the Republican Party or a party-wide campaign organization created them.

What did Taylor Swift say, and whom did she endorse?
On September 10, 2024, after the presidential debate, Swift addressed the images in an Instagram post. As reproduced by The Washington Post, she wrote: “Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”
In that same post, she endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris: “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” Swift also encouraged people to research candidates and their positions.

How to check a political endorsement claim
A convincing image or screenshot is not proof that a public figure has endorsed a candidate. Before sharing a claim, check its source and look for independent confirmation.

Check whether the image comes from a public figure’s verified account or is being circulated without a direct link to an original statement.
- Look for a statement through a verified channel. Check the person’s official account or website for the endorsement and its context.
- Seek independent corroboration. Consult reputable news outlets or fact-checkers rather than relying on reposts of the same image.
- Do not treat an AI detector as definitive proof. The cited reporting supports checking provenance and independent sources; it does not establish a particular detection tool as conclusive.
- Pause before reposting. If the original source and independent confirmation are missing, do not present the claim as fact.
Why the images raised broader concerns
Swift said the false image heightened her fears about AI and misinformation and led her to make her actual voting plans clear. The episode also unfolded amid public concern about election-related misinformation: in a 2024 Content Authenticity Initiative survey of 2,002 U.S. citizens aged 18 and older, 94% said they were concerned misinformation would affect the upcoming election, and 87% said generative AI had made it harder to tell fact from fiction online. TIME reported those survey results; they describe respondents’ views, not the reach or effect of the Swift images. TIME’s article on protecting yourself from AI election misinformation also quotes UC Berkeley professor Hany Farid advising people not to rely on social media for reliable information.
