Taylor Devices ended fiscal 2026 with sharply lower fourth-quarter sales and earnings than a year earlier, but reported a record $52.8 million firm order backlog at May 31, 2026. That combination makes a rebound plausible, not assured: customers still have to convert orders into work the company can recognize as revenue, and the timing and profitability of that conversion are uncertain.
Why did Taylor Devices’ quarter look so weak?
For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, Taylor Devices reported sales of $8,954,650, down from $15,561,154 in the FY2025 quarter. Net income fell to $1,866,826 from $3,688,076. For the full fiscal year, sales were $41,649,673 versus $46,292,725, while net income was $8,563,674 versus $9,413,136. These are actual declines, even though management says order timing was a major cause.
CEO Tim Sopko attributed the shortfall primarily to customer delays in placing orders, which pushed the opportunity to convert them into sales beyond the fiscal year. That explanation is management’s account of the period; it does not establish that every delayed order will arrive or be completed on a particular schedule.

Profitability also weakened: FY2026 gross margin was 44%, compared with 46% in FY2025. A return of sales volume alone would therefore not guarantee a comparable return in earnings; the margin on the work matters too. Taylor Devices reported these figures in its FY2026 fourth-quarter and full-year earnings release.

What the record backlog does—and does not—show
At May 31, 2026, Taylor Devices reported a record firm order backlog of $52.8 million. The company said 92% was aerospace and defense. It also identified a discrete $19 million order as the largest single order in its history. These orders provide potential work ahead, but backlog is not revenue already earned, cash already collected, or a guarantee of future earnings.
The rebound case depends on conversion: orders must progress into production and delivery, and then be recognized as sales under the company’s accounting. The company’s release does not establish when the backlog will convert or what margins the orders will earn. The $19 million order is a significant concentration within the reported backlog, so its execution and timing are particularly relevant to interpreting future results.

Where demand is strongest—and where it is weaker
Taylor Devices serves aerospace and defense, structural, and industrial markets with engineered products such as seismic dampers, shock absorbers, buffers, springs, vibration isolators, and actuators. Its exposure is not evenly spread across these markets.
In the nine months ended February 28, 2026, aerospace and defense represented 66% of sales, structural work 24%, and industrial work 10%. Those nine-month figures are not a full-year mix. In that same period, sales were $32.695 million, up 6% year over year, and net income increased 17%. This earlier growth helps explain why the later full-year decline should not be mistaken for a uniform downturn across every quarter or market.

- SPRING ASSIST TOWING SHOCKS: Gabriel Load Carrier shocks combine shock absorber and spring technology to help reduce ride height loss under ongoing loaded conditions for towing and hauling applications
- UP TO 500 LBS LOAD SUPPORT: Variable-rate rear coil springs provide up to 500 lbs of load capacity per pair to help improve stability and maintain ride height while towing or hauling cargo; does not increase vehicle payload rating
- HEAVY-DUTY CONSTRUCTION: Drawn-Over-Mandrel (D.O.M.) pressure cylinder reduces internal wear, while the chromed piston rod helps resist corrosion and provides consistent sealing performance
- LEAK-RESISTANT DESIGN: Engineered with a leak-proof piston seal to help extend shock life and maintain dependable ride control under demanding towing and hauling conditions
- FITMENT: Direct fit for Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500, Tahoe, Yukon; Ram 1500/3500; Nissan Titan
Management described aerospace and defense as the stronger area, while structural and industrial sales were weaker. It cited higher interest rates and unfavorable exchange rates as headwinds affecting structural markets. The company’s Form 10-Q for the nine months ended February 28, 2026 also cautions that backlog, revenue, gross profit, and net income fluctuate, and that changes across the reported periods are not necessarily representative of future results.
What would confirm a rebound?
The backlog makes a recovery scenario credible, but investors need evidence beyond its headline size. Useful indicators in subsequent company reports include:

- Backlog conversion: whether orders become recognized sales, and how quickly the company reports that progress.
- End-market mix: whether aerospace and defense remains strong and structural and industrial activity stabilizes.
- Margins: whether gross margin improves from FY2026’s 44% as revenue changes.
- Order concentration and execution: whether the large $19 million order advances without delays that materially affect reported results.
A large backlog can support visibility while still producing uneven quarterly results. Orders, production, delivery, revenue recognition, margins, and net income are related stages, not interchangeable measures.
Is TAYD a buy after the bad quarter?
The operating evidence supports a conditional recovery thesis, not a definitive buy call. The bull case is record firm backlog, substantial aerospace and defense exposure, and management’s explanation that customer order timing pushed potential sales beyond year-end. The caution is that FY2026 sales and net income both declined, the fourth quarter was particularly weak against a strong comparison, margins narrowed, and some end markets faced pressure.

The company’s results and backlog do not by themselves establish whether TAYD shares are cheap or what return an investor might earn. A valuation judgment would also require a current share price and assumptions about backlog conversion, future margins, and earnings. Those are not established by the cited company materials.
