TaxSlayer’s Self-Employed plan is designed for freelancers, contractors, gig workers, and other 1099 filers who need individual-return support for business income. It advertises Schedule C and 1099 guidance, access to tax professionals with self-employed expertise, a tax guide, and quarterly estimated-payment reminders. The federal price shown on TaxSlayer’s product page was $74.99 as of October 7, 2026; state filing costs extra, and the company says prices can change. Whether it is a good fit depends on the forms you need, your total checkout cost, and the level of help you want.
What TaxSlayer Self-Employed includes
TaxSlayer lists four consumer filing tiers: Simply Free, Classic, Premium, and Self-Employed. It positions Self-Employed for contractors, 1099 filers, side hustlers, and self-employed people. The plan’s advertised features are relevant to filers reporting business income on an individual return:
- Additional guidance for 1099 income and Schedule C.
- Access to tax professionals with self-employed expertise.
- A self-employed tax guide.
- Year-round reminders about quarterly estimated payments.
These are features TaxSlayer describes, not independently verified results. They do not establish how easy a workflow is, whether a particular deduction is handled correctly, or how quickly support resolves a question. TaxSlayer’s product page also associates Premium with priority support, live chat, and Ask a Tax Pro; check the current plan details for the precise support available to you. How the self-employment forms fit together
Self-employment filing is more than entering a 1099. TaxSlayer’s 2024 guide describes how business income can be reported alongside W-2 income on an individual return, and outlines the roles of common forms:
#1 Best Overall
- Perfect quality CD digital audio extraction (ripping)
- Fastest CD Ripper available
- Extract audio from CDs to wav or Mp3
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Schedule C: Reports business profit or loss.
- Schedule SE: Calculates self-employment tax based on net earnings reported on Schedule C.
- Form 1040-ES: Used to calculate estimated tax payments.
The guide is useful for basic form orientation, but it is dated 2024 and should not be treated as an authority on current filing-year thresholds or tax law. For current requirements, consult the IRS or a qualified tax professional. Keep organized records of income and business activity, including mileage where relevant; a recordkeeping tool does not make an expense deductible by itself. TaxSlayer’s 2024 Self-Employed Guide
How much TaxSlayer Self-Employed costs
TaxSlayer’s product page listed the Self-Employed federal filing price at $74.99 as of October 7, 2026. State filing is additional, so this is not an all-in price. The same page listed Classic at $44.99 and Premium at $64.99, while Simply Free is a free federal return for qualifying taxpayers. Prices are vendor-listed amounts and can change; TaxSlayer says actual prices depend on selections, submitted information, and applicable coupons, discounts, or promotions. Before choosing a plan, check the checkout total for your state, any additional state returns, and optional services or payment choices. Simply Free has age, income, credit, and deduction restrictions, and TaxSlayer says fewer than a majority of U.S. taxpayers may qualify. Do not assume self-employment income is eligible without checking the current requirements and supported forms.
Who may find it a good fit
Freelancers and 1099 filers with a straightforward individual return
The plan’s stated audience and advertised Schedule C and 1099 guidance make it a plausible option for someone reporting self-employment activity on an individual return. Compare the features with the forms and support you actually need, rather than relying on the plan name alone.

Filers who want tax-prep guidance and reminders
TaxSlayer advertises access to tax professionals with self-employed expertise, a guide, and estimated-payment reminders. Those features may matter if you want more than a basic self-service workflow, but the product description does not specify the scope of professional help or guarantee a particular response.
People comparing total cost across services
A published federal price gives you a starting point, but state filing and any other selected options affect the amount you pay. Compare checkout totals and support details for your own situation, not just federal plan prices.

When to check form coverage or consider a preparer
TaxSlayer’s product caveat defines “all tax situations” in terms of forms, credits, and deductions its software supports, and notes that some business tax returns and specialized situations may not be included. An individual return that reports self-employment income is not the same as a separate return for a business entity. If you file for an entity, have an unusual or complex situation, or cannot confirm that the required forms are supported, verify coverage with TaxSlayer before paying and consider a qualified tax preparer. What is—and is not—established about TaxSlayer
The available product information supports a review of TaxSlayer’s stated audience, listed features, and published pricing, but not a hands-on verdict about usability or calculation accuracy. The software was not independently tested here, and no return calculation or support interaction was verified.

There is limited institutional context: the IRS’s Publication 5361, TaxSlayer Procedural Updates for SPEC Partners and Employees, revised August 2025, states that TaxSlayer remained a software provider for the VITA/TCE program for filing season 2026. That statement concerns the program’s software provider; it is not an IRS endorsement of TaxSlayer’s consumer Self-Employed plan or evidence of its consumer-product quality. IRS Publication 5361
