Whether Tauranga City Council chief executive Marty Grenfell will receive a payout is not known from the public statements and reporting available as of 2 October 2026. The Mount Maunganui Ratepayers, Residents and Retailers Association is asking the council to clarify the matter. The council’s announcement confirmed Grenfell’s resignation and final day but did not give a reason or payout details.
What is known about Grenfell’s resignation?
Tauranga City Council announced on 29 September 2026 that Grenfell had resigned as chief executive. The council said his last day in the office would be 2 October 2026. Mayor Mahē Drysdale thanked him for his “unwavering commitment to public service in our city over the past eight years.” The announcement said an interim chief executive would be appointed and recruitment for a permanent replacement would begin as soon as possible. Tauranga City Council’s announcement did not state why Grenfell resigned or whether he would receive a departure payment.
What are ratepayers asking the council to disclose?
A 2 October report by Infrastructure News, attributed to RNZ, says the Mount Maunganui Ratepayers, Residents and Retailers Association wants to know whether Grenfell will receive a payout. Association president Michael O’Neill argued that ratepayers have a right to know how public money is spent if a “golden handshake” is involved. That is the association’s transparency argument; it does not establish that a payment exists or determine what information the council is legally required to disclose.
The same report says the mayor, Grenfell and city councillors declined to discuss the matter with RNZ. That leaves the payout question unanswered in the report; it is not confirmation that Grenfell will be paid or that the council is concealing specific contractual terms. How does the landslide fit into the story?
The RNZ-attributed report says Grenfell had faced calls to resign following a review of the January Mount Maunganui landslide, which killed six people. It reports that Grenfell initially described the event as a system failure rather than the fault of one person. The council announcement said it would seek a new leader able to respond to the Davison review and other inquiries, but it did not say the landslide caused Grenfell’s resignation.
There were two distinct ratepayers’ organizations involved at different points. On 1 September, the Tauranga Ratepayers’ Alliance called for Grenfell to resign, saying the Davison review found systemic failures and described the tragedy as preventable while assigning blame to no individual. That is the Alliance’s account of the review. The later request for information about a possible payout came from the Mount Maunganui Ratepayers, Residents and Retailers Association. The Alliance’s 1 September statement is separate from the association’s request.

Timeline
- 1 September 2026: Tauranga Ratepayers’ Alliance calls for Grenfell to resign, citing its interpretation of the Davison review.
- 29 September 2026: Tauranga City Council announces Grenfell’s resignation and says his last day will be 2 October.
- 2 October 2026: An RNZ-attributed report says the Mount Maunganui association is seeking clarity on a possible payout and that council leadership did not comment to RNZ.
What remains unanswered?
The available public statements and report do not confirm whether a departure payment will be made, its amount, or any terms. The council announcement provides no payout information, and the reported lack of comment does not resolve the question. Until the council or another authoritative record provides those details, claims that Grenfell has received a “golden handshake” would go beyond what is established.
