The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD (A047) is a relatively light full-frame telephoto zoom for Sony E- or Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. It offers useful reach for wildlife, sports, distant details and portraits without the bulk of many longer telephotos. The main trade-off is stabilization: the lens has no optical image stabilization, so handheld results depend on your camera’s in-body stabilization and shutter speed.
What the Tamron 70-300mm is—and which cameras it fits
The A047 covers 70–300mm and is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Tamron sells separate Sony E and Nikon Z versions; the mounts are not interchangeable. Confirm your camera’s mount and body compatibility before buying. Exact compatibility for individual bodies is not established here, so check Tamron’s current support information for your model.
Tamron added the Nikon Z version on September 29, 2022, according to its launch announcement. The lens is also usable on compatible APS-C bodies, where the camera’s crop factor narrows the angle of view compared with full frame. The camera body’s sensor format and stabilization features therefore matter as much as the lens specification.
Size and weight for a travel kit
Tamron’s US product specifications, accessed October 4, 2026, list these dimensions. Both versions have a 77mm maximum diameter and a 67mm filter thread.
#1 Best Overall
- Supreme lightweight portability that makes telephoto shooting fun
- Uncompromising image quality with 15 elements in 10 groups that lets you focus on creativity
- Up-close shooting performance (31.5" / 1:9.4 Wide & 59.1" / 1:5.1 Tele)
- Moisture-Resistant Construction
| Version | Length | Weight | Filter thread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony E | 148mm | 545g | 67mm |
| Nikon Z | 150.3mm | 580g | 67mm |
Those figures make the lens comparatively portable for a full-frame zoom that reaches 300mm, but it still takes meaningful space in a travel bag. Whether the reach earns that space depends on what you photograph: it is useful for distant architectural details, wildlife, outdoor sports and tighter portraits, but less compelling if most of your travel images are wide street scenes or interiors.
Stabilization: the key handheld trade-off
The A047 has no in-lens optical stabilization. Tamron says compatible camera bodies can provide stabilization through in-body image stabilization (IBIS). On a stabilized full-frame body, that can make handheld use more practical; on a body without IBIS, especially an APS-C Nikon Z body, the lack of optical stabilization is a more significant limitation.

At 300mm, small camera movements are magnified. In dim light, the lens’s maximum aperture also narrows to f/6.3 at the long end, which can require a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. For moving subjects such as birds or athletes, stabilization cannot freeze subject motion: choose a shutter speed fast enough for the subject, then use IBIS where available to reduce camera shake. If you frequently shoot handheld at 300mm in low light, compare it with a stabilized alternative before deciding.
Image quality: strong center, less consistent edges
Independent reviews report good central sharpness, but the results are not uniform across the frame or zoom range. Digital Camera World’s January 20, 2021 review found especially strong center detail from 70–100mm, with center performance holding up through the range. It found middle sharpness less impressive and edges weaker, particularly at shorter focal lengths. The reviewer also saw little color fringing at short and medium settings, with more appearing toward 200–300mm.

Cameralabs’ January 9, 2023 review tested the Nikon Z version. It reported sharp to very sharp full-frame results overall, with a pronounced corner weakness at 70mm that it attributed to field curvature. That finding and the Digital Camera World results come from different versions and test conditions; neither guarantees the performance of every copy or camera combination.
For travel photographs where the main subject is centered, the reported center performance is encouraging. If you routinely need fine detail right into the corners—such as in architectural or landscape compositions—pay particular attention to results at the focal lengths and apertures you use. If possible, assess a sample with your own camera and examine the edges as well as the center.

Autofocus, construction and firmware
Tamron uses an RXD stepping motor and describes it as designed for fast, quiet focusing. In its tests, Digital Camera World reported fast, consistently accurate autofocus, including in dull lighting; Cameralabs likewise described autofocus on the Nikon Z version as fast and reliable. These are review observations, not a guarantee for every body, subject or shooting situation. Camera-specific autofocus behavior can vary.

Treat that as some protection against moisture rather than permission to use the lens in heavy rain without care. Manufacturer materials also list a seven-blade circular diaphragm and BBAR coating. Tamron lists 15 elements in 10 groups; that is an optical-construction detail, not a measure of image quality.

Firmware updates differ by mount. Tamron lists camera-based updates for the Sony E version. For the Nikon Z version, Tamron documents updates through Tamron Lens Utility on a PC and a separate connection cable. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it compares with Sony’s 70-300mm alternative
For Sony E shooters, one cited alternative is Sony’s FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS. The Sony lens includes optical stabilization, an autofocus limiter switch and a customizable function button; the Tamron does not have optical stabilization. Current relative prices are not established, so compare local listings rather than relying on older review-era price comparisons.

For a Sony E buyer, weigh stabilization and handling against the Tamron’s size, weight and image quality at the focal lengths you actually use. Also compare current local prices and availability. For Nikon Z users, this Sony lens is not a mount-compatible substitute.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- Good fit: travel photographers with a compatible, preferably stabilized, full-frame Sony E or Nikon Z body who want 300mm reach without carrying a larger telephoto.
- Consider another option: photographers who often shoot handheld at 300mm in low light, use a body without IBIS, or need reliable edge detail across the frame.
- Before purchase: verify the mount, your camera’s compatibility and stabilization, current local price, and the applicable firmware-update method.
