Riverwalk hotels and downtown Tampa hotels are not two separate districts: the Riverwalk runs through downtown. Choose by comparing a hotel’s exact address and walking route with your main venue or attractions, then weigh the full price and transport options for your dates.
What “Riverwalk” and “downtown” mean in Tampa
The Riverwalk is a waterfront corridor within downtown Tampa, so a hotel described as downtown may be near the Riverwalk—or several blocks from it. The City of Tampa’s downtown guide and Riverwalk page show how the areas overlap.
Visit Tampa Bay describes the Riverwalk as 2.6 miles long, running along the Hillsborough River to Garrison Channel; the page does not state a publication year. That is context for the waterfront corridor, not a distance estimate between a particular hotel and your destination. Visit Tampa Bay’s Riverwalk page

Which location fits your itinerary?
Choose a Riverwalk-adjacent hotel when
- Your plans center on waterfront walks or attractions connected to the Riverwalk.
- You want to be near a particular riverside venue and have checked the route from the hotel’s actual address.
- You value being able to walk along the corridor, while accounting for weather, crossings, accessibility, and the return trip.
The City lists attractions and destinations connected to the Riverwalk, including the Florida Aquarium, Tampa Bay History Center, Glazer Children’s Museum, Tampa Museum of Art, Straz Center, parks, and Benchmark International Arena. The most convenient hotel location depends on which stop you plan to visit; being near one end of the corridor does not mean being near every attraction. City of Tampa Riverwalk page

Choose another downtown hotel when
- It is closer to your primary venue, workplace, or other planned stop than the Riverwalk options you are considering.
- Its total cost or included amenities work better for your travel dates.
- You are comfortable using transit or rideshare for waterfront destinations that are not a practical walk.
The Tampa Convention Center is on the Riverwalk. The City says it is within walking distance of major hotels and restaurants in the core area; its nearby-hotel directory reports distances relative to the Convention Center, not to every Riverwalk attraction. Compare hotels by the factors that affect your stay
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Exact location | Hotel address and route to your actual venue or attractions; a “Riverwalk” label alone does not establish proximity. |
| Walking convenience | Route length, crossings, accessibility, weather exposure, and whether the walk is manageable at the time you will make it. |
| Total value | Compare the same dates and room type, including fees, parking, and amenities. The available sources do not establish which area is cheaper. |
| Transportation | Check current streetcar, bus, water taxi, and rideshare access for your destination and travel dates. |
| Trip style | Decide whether waterfront access or proximity to a different venue or neighborhood matters more. |
The City’s nearby-hotel directory lists options around downtown, the Channel District, and Ybor City with distances from the Convention Center. Treat it as a directory rather than a booking recommendation: confirm a property’s current name, address, operating status, amenities, and availability directly with the hotel.
