“National 5G network” can mean a government-owned system or simply a nationwide service built by commercial carriers under public rules. The clearest match for this headline is a January 2018 US debate about a federal government-built and operated network. It was reported as an idea under consideration, not an adopted plan. The available account does not establish a final design, cost, schedule, or implementation status.
What was proposed in the US discussion?
On 29 January 2018, Axios reported that the Trump White House was considering a federal government-built and operated nationwide 5G network. That report is the strongest match for the headline, but the identity is not certain, and it does not show that the proposal was approved or built. Axios’s contemporaneous report quoted then-FCC Chairman Ajit Pai opposing the idea.

Pai said: “I oppose any proposal for the federal government to build and operate a nationwide 5G network.” He argued that “the market, not government, is best positioned to drive innovation and investment.” Those are Pai’s policy views; they do not settle which ownership model would work best.
What does “national network” leave undecided?
Ownership is only one part of the question. A public network could still involve private contractors or carriers, while a commercially built network remains subject to government spectrum rules, coverage requirements, and security controls. The 2018 reporting does not establish how the proposal would have answered the following questions:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Ownership and operations: Would government own the physical network and run it, or would it contract construction and operations to private firms?
- Funding and risk: Who would pay for construction, upgrades, and ongoing operation—and who would bear the risk of delays or cost overruns?
- Competition and access: Would existing carriers compete with a public operator, use its infrastructure, or have wholesale access on common terms?
- Spectrum: Which frequencies would be assigned, and would they be reserved for one operator, shared, or made available to multiple providers?
- Coverage: What obligations would ensure service in rural and underserved areas, where commercial returns may be lower?
- Security and resilience: Who would oversee suppliers, respond to threats, and keep service available during equipment failures or outages?
Without answers to these design questions, the phrase “national 5G network” does not describe a sufficiently specific plan to compare costs, benefits, or outcomes.
How does the UK approach differ?
Current UK policy provides a separate example, not evidence about the US proposal. In a proposed telecoms priorities statement issued on 21 July 2025, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology described 5G deployment as commercially driven. It set an ambition for high-quality standalone 5G in all populated areas by 2030 and asked Ofcom to monitor competition, investment, coverage quality, security, and resilience. The department’s proposed Statement of Strategic Priorities therefore illustrates a model in which government sets policy and regulatory priorities while expecting commercial investment to deliver networks; it is not a government-owned nationwide network.

- 【Ultra-Fast 5G & Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7】Powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing MBB Gen 3 (X72), delivers up to 4.67 Gbps 5G download and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 at 688 Mbps (2.4 GHz) + 2882 Mbps (5 GHz) + 5765 Mbps (6 GHz) — supports up to 64 connected devices for lag-free 4K streaming, gaming, and Zoom/Teams meetings.
- 【Built-in eSIM + Dual Nano-SIM with Dual Standby Support】No SIM lock — flexibly switch between the onboard eSIM and two physical nano-SIM slots for convenient carrier access while traveling. Access regional and global eSIM data plans for North America and Europe directly on the device with easy QR-code top-up support, or import your own eSIM for flexible connectivity on the go. Enjoy one-tap carrier connection with seamless SIM and eSIM switching directly from the 2.8" touchscreen (eSIM uses one SIM position when activated). Zero SIM swaps, zero local SIM hunting on international trips.
- 【2.5G Ethernet + 10 Gbps USB-C】Built for pro setups: 2.5 Gbps Ethernet WAN/LAN port for wired backhaul, plus a 10 Gbps USB-C port for tethering, OTG storage and external NAS sync — ideal for content creators offloading 4K/8K footage and remote workers in hotels, Airbnbs, and co-working spaces.
- 【Quad-Path Multi-WAN Failover】Run 2.5G Ethernet, Wi-Fi Repeater, USB Tethering and 5G Cellular at the same time — if any one link drops, traffic auto-routes to the next in seconds. Built for pop-up retail POS, food trucks, trade-show booths and live media that cannot afford a single second of downtime.
- 【13.5h Battery + 30W PD Fast Charging】Up to 13.5 hours of untethered freedom on a single charge from the built-in 5150 mAh battery — 30W PD/PPS USB-C fast charge refills to full in roughly 1.3 hours, so a coffee break is enough to get you back online for the rest of the day.
Cost figures must also be kept in context. The UK department reported an industry estimate of up to £34 billion for UK mobile operators’ advanced 5G deployment through 2030. That figure, presented in the department’s Mobile Market Review call for evidence, is neither a cost estimate for the 2018 US idea nor an estimate for a publicly owned network.

No. Ownership alone does not establish whether a network is secure; supplier rules, oversight, equipment choices, and operational controls matter too. In a UK parliamentary written statement dated 13 October 2022, the government said the deadline for removing all Huawei equipment from the UK’s 5G network remained 2027. The statement on Huawei controls illustrates one kind of security policy. It does not prove that either public or commercial ownership is inherently safer.
