The fan-made Tales of Symphonia: Definitive Edition mod is scheduled to open public beta testing on October 11, 2026, for the Steam version of the game. The date and planned features come from the project team; the beta had not started as of October 7, 2026.
What the open beta is—and what it is not
This is a fan project for the Steam release, not an official Bandai Namco edition or update. The team says it aims to bring content together across versions, restore missing voice and text, update textures, address bugs it associates with later ports, and return the game to 60 frames per second. Those are the developers’ stated goals, not independently verified results.
The team has also claimed that enabling 60 FPS fixed more than 100 bugs. That figure is the developer’s claim in a 2026 project discussion, not an independent audit. Project developer discussion
What the mod plans to change
Alongside restoration and technical work, the project describes optional quality-of-life and battle changes. Wccftech’s account of the announced features includes Free Run, removal of the spell queue, more Arte shortcuts through an Artes Ball, manual Overlimit activation, and cutscene fast-forward. The team’s descriptions do not establish how these options perform in the upcoming beta.

It is separate from Tales of Symphonia Remastered, Bandai Namco’s official release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, launched February 17, 2023. The publisher says the Steam version already contains the in-game content in Remastered; its Q&A describes Steam as running at 30 FPS and says the console remaster was optimized for stable 30 FPS. Why the project is drawing attention
The original game launched on GameCube in Japan in 2003 and worldwide in 2004, according to Bandai Namco. Its story follows a Chosen One’s struggle to save a dying world, with two interconnected worlds, and its real-time battles support up to four players. Official game page
The mod’s planned mix of restoration, visual updates, performance changes, and optional combat adjustments is aimed at players who want to revisit that game through the Steam version. The October 11 date is the project team’s announced start for public testing—not a confirmed final release date.
