To take a Nokia 3310 game jam further, first meet the current edition’s stated constraints, then choose how closely you want to imitate the phone’s limitations. Nokia 3310 Jam 8 specified an 84 × 48-pixel base resolution and a choice of Original, Phosphor, or Gray palette; it did not require a real handset. The 2026 event ran August 22–31 and has ended.

Start with the current jam’s actual requirements

The current event listing for Nokia 3310 Jam 8 sets the practical baseline: design for an 84 × 48-pixel resolution and choose one of its three palettes—Original, Phosphor, or Gray. These are the edition-specific constraints to use when judging compliance. The event took place August 22–31, 2026, so it is no longer open; check the next edition’s page for its own rules rather than assuming they will be identical.

The resolution is small enough that each pixel matters. Build around readable silhouettes, clear contrast, and a compact play area instead of shrinking a conventional high-resolution game until its details disappear. A palette choice can reinforce atmosphere, but it should not undermine visibility or make important objects hard to distinguish.

Compliance and historical fidelity are different goals

Following the current edition’s published rules is compliance. Reproducing more of the original phone’s constraints is an optional creative choice. The Jam 6 FAQ explains the distinction directly: “Does my game have to run on a real Nokia 3310? Nope! We’re just using the restrictions as a design space.” The FAQ is from the 2024 edition, so treat its additional suggestions as historical-fidelity guidance, not as Jam 8 requirements.

VBESTLIFE Mobile Phone for Seniors, 2G GSM Unlocked Cell Phone, Large Volume, Triple SIM Standby, Voice Changer, Bluetooth Music Player, 600 mah Battery (Blue White)
  • Bluetooth Music Player: The smallest phone can be used as a Bluetooth music player, providing clear sound, and can also be used as a Bluetooth headset for calls.
  • Low Radiation: The radiation rate of the mini key phone is 1/7 lower than that of regular smartphones, making it the best choice for protecting pregnant women and babies from signal radiation.
  • Triple SIM Standby: The world's smallest Bluetooth mini phone supports three SIM cards Nano SIM cards (or 2 SIM cards and 1 storage card) (not included).
  • GSM Band: The smallest phone is compatible with GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz (supports 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G SIM cards, but must support 2G GSM frequency).
  • Voice Changer: The smallest unlocked phone comes with a voice changer that allows you to change your voice during calls (this feature requires a SIM card).

That FAQ recommends considering a 15 fps frame rate, avoiding sub-pixel movement and scrolling, aligning artwork and movement to the pixel grid, keeping technology simple, and limiting controls. These choices can make a project feel more like a game designed around the phone rather than merely styled to resemble one.

Design choice What greater fidelity can mean Status in the cited guidance
Resolution and palette Use the current jam’s 84 × 48-pixel base resolution and one of its listed palettes. Jam 8 event-page constraints for 2026.
Frame rate Consider limiting the game to 15 fps. Optional suggestion in the Jam 6 FAQ, not established here as a Jam 8 rule.
Movement and scrolling Avoid sub-pixel movement and scrolling; keep motion aligned to whole pixels. Optional suggestion in the Jam 6 FAQ.
Controls Keep the control set limited and suited to simple inputs. Optional suggestion in the Jam 6 FAQ; no specific control count is stated.
Rendering and technology Favor simple techniques that support the small display and constrained aesthetic. Optional suggestion in the Jam 6 FAQ; no required technology is stated.
Sound Use sound sparingly if you want to evoke the phone’s limitations. No specific sound limit is established by the cited current rules or FAQ guidance.

The Jam 6 FAQ calls running a game on a real Nokia 3310 the “ultimate challenge,” but also says a real device is not required. Treat device compatibility as an ambitious extra, not a participation prerequisite. The available Jam 8 rules cited here do not establish a sound limit or a required development tool.

Choose constraints that strengthen the game

More restrictions do not automatically make a better entry. Choose them where they improve legibility, mood, or the core mechanic. For example, restricting movement to whole-pixel steps can make a tiny character easier to read, while a low frame rate can suit deliberate movement but feel poor for a fast-action game. A single-button or small-control design can clarify the game’s central action, but it should still give the player enough agency to make meaningful choices.

  • For a straightforward compliant entry: prioritize the stated resolution and palette, then make the game readable at that size.
  • For a stronger retro-phone feel: add selected FAQ suggestions, such as pixel-grid movement and a limited control set.
  • For a deeper technical challenge: explore real-device compatibility only if it fits your time and skills; it is not required.

Keep the game’s ambition in proportion to the jam

The constraints leave room for different genres and scales. One participant described making a roguelite in a week for the 2023 jam; that is an example of an individual project, not a recommended scope or expectation for every entrant. A compact game with one polished mechanic can use the format just as effectively as a larger concept.

Unlocked Smallest Mobile Phone, BM10 Tiny Mini Mobile with Voice Changer Hands Bluetooth Dialer Phone for Students, Support Dual SIM Card (Black)
  • DUAL SIM: World's smallest Bluetooth headset mini cell phone supports dual sim Nano cards (or one sim and one memory card) (not included).
  • LOW RADIATION: Mini phone radiation rate is 1/7 lower than the general smart phone, it is the best phone to pregnant women and babies from radiation.
  • BLUETOOTH MUSIC PLAYER: Mini cell phone can be used as a Bluetooth music player with clear sound, and can also be hung up as Bluetooth headphones.
  • VOICE CHANGER: Smallest unlocked phone comes with a voice changer, you can change your voice while talking (this feature requires sim card).
  • GSM BAND: Smallest phone is suitable for GSM 850 900 1800 1900MHz ( 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Sim Cards are available, but must support 2G GSM Frequency).

Decide what the player should understand and do in the first moments, then spend the limited display area and control scheme on that experience. If an extra fidelity rule makes the game harder to read or play without adding a meaningful effect, it is optional—and can be left out.
