On an iPhone or iPad, open the page in Safari, take a normal screenshot, open its thumbnail, and choose Full Page. Safari then captures the webpage beyond the visible screen. On a Mac, Safari does not provide the same built-in scrolling screenshot control; use a screen capture for visible pixels, or save the page as a Web Archive, Page Source, or PDF depending on your goal.
Capture an entire webpage on iPhone
The Full Page control appears after you take a screenshot while the webpage is open in Safari. It creates one long capture that can include content below the fold.
- Open the webpage in Safari and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Take a screenshot. On an iPhone without a Home button, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail when it appears in the lower-left corner. If the thumbnail disappears before you tap it, take the screenshot again.
- Tap Full Page at the top of the editing screen.
- Drag through the long preview to check the top, middle and bottom of the page. Use the crop tool if you need to remove browser content or unrelated sections.
- Use the available save control to store the capture. iPhone screenshots normally go to Photos when thumbnail previews are enabled; the exact save choices can vary with the iOS version and screenshot settings.
What Full Page captures
Full Page extends the capture beyond the pixels currently visible on the screen. It is useful for an article, documentation page, receipt or other page that would otherwise require many separate screenshots. It produces a screenshot image, not an interactive copy of the website.

If Full Page is not offered
Make sure the screenshot was taken while Safari was displaying the webpage itself, then open the thumbnail immediately. The control is associated with the webpage capture editor, so it will not appear for every type of screen or app. Interface names and save controls can change with iOS updates.

Capture an entire webpage on iPad
iPad uses the same Full Page workflow, but its hardware shortcut is different.
- Open the page in Safari.
- On an iPad without a Home button, quickly press and release the top button and either volume button together. On an iPad with a Home button, press and release the top button and Home button together.
- Tap the thumbnail, then choose Full Page.
- Drag the preview to inspect the full document. Crop or annotate it if necessary.
- Tap Done and choose the displayed save destination.
Other iPad ways to start a screenshot
Apple also documents starting an iPad screenshot with an Apple Pencil corner swipe, Siri or AssistiveTouch. After the screenshot is created, select Full Page in the same editor.
Inspect, crop and annotate the long capture
The Full Page editor shows a narrow preview of the complete page and lets you drag through it. Check for content that loaded late, clipped sections at the bottom, and accidental browser chrome before saving. Cropping is helpful when you need only the article column or want to remove the Safari address bar. iPad’s editor also supports markup and annotation; use it to highlight a passage or add a note before saving.

Choose PDF when the deliverable should be a document that is easy to share or print rather than a tall image.
- In Safari on iPhone, open the webpage’s Share menu.
- Choose Markup.
- Make any annotations, then choose Save File To and select a location.
This workflow creates a PDF document. It is separate from the Full Page screenshot, so use Full Page when you specifically need an image.
What changes on a Mac
Apple’s Mac screenshot controls capture the screen, a selected area, or a window; they do not document a built-in Full Page command that automatically scrolls through a Safari webpage.
Capture what is visible
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: select a rectangular area.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
These shortcuts record visible pixels only. They will not create a complete, scrolling webpage image by themselves.
Save the webpage as a Web Archive
- In Safari, choose File > Save As.
- Choose Web Archive as the format.
- Save the file where you can find it later.
A Web Archive stores page graphics and keeps links functional while their destination pages remain available. It is a saved webpage package, not a flat screenshot. Apple cautions that some webpages may prevent Safari from saving items displayed on them.
Save only the source
Choose Page Source in the Save As dialog when you need the page’s HTML source rather than its rendered appearance. Source HTML will not preserve the visual layout as an image.
Create a PDF on Mac
Safari can share a webpage as a PDF through Mail. Use this when a paginated document is more useful than a screen image or Web Archive.
Choose the right output
| Goal | Best Safari workflow | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| One long image on iPhone or iPad | Screenshot thumbnail > Full Page | A scrollable preview saved as an image |
| Annotated document on iPhone | Share > Markup > Save File To | |
| Visible Mac screen | Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4 or window capture | Screenshot of the visible screen, area or window |
| Saved Mac webpage with links | File > Save As > Web Archive | Web Archive, subject to page restrictions |
| Mac HTML source | File > Save As > Page Source | Source HTML, not a rendered screenshot |
| Shareable paginated document on Mac | Safari’s share-to-PDF workflow |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners, then remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. This cURL request captures Stripe’s page and writes a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
In Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you need and keep the access key private. For automated workflows, ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Options useful for long or dynamic pages
- Full-page capture loads lazy images; you can also capture one element by CSS selector.
- Set a device preset or any viewport, dark mode, retina scale, transparent background or image resize.
- Wait for a selector, a delay or network idle before capture; click an element first when a menu must be opened.
- Apply custom CSS or JavaScript, hide selectors, and block ads, trackers, requests or resource types.
- Supply custom headers, cookies, a user agent, an Authorization value, timezone or geolocation.
- Choose PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
- Use a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, the usage API and OpenAPI specification.
ScreenshotNeo accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration. Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans are $5 for 3,000 shots, $15 for 15,000, $39 for 60,000, $99 for 250,000 and $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free.

Troubleshooting Safari captures
The thumbnail did not appear
Take the hardware shortcut again and release both buttons quickly. If thumbnail previews are disabled or disappear immediately, open the screenshot from Photos and check whether the Full Page tab is available there; controls vary by software version and settings.
Full Page stops before the bottom
Some page content is loaded only after interaction or scrolling. Wait for the page to finish loading before taking the screenshot, then inspect the long preview. If the page still does not include content, capture the relevant sections separately or use an automated capture that can wait for a selector or network idle.
Best Value
The result contains unwanted browser controls
Use the crop tool in the Full Page editor to remove the address bar or other margins. On Mac, select only the Safari window or the page area with Shift-Command-4.
A Mac Web Archive is incomplete
Safari warns that some webpages can prevent displayed items from being saved. When that happens, use a PDF or visible screenshot for a record, or save the Page Source if HTML is what you need.

Check that the access key is present, the URL is URL-encoded, and the request has enough time to load the page. Inspect the response headers, including X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, to distinguish a clean capture from a blocked, blank, timed-out or failed load. For dynamic pages, add an appropriate wait condition and avoid caching while testing.
Practical limits and reliability notes
- Mobile Full Page is the simplest choice for a one-off capture, but the final save controls depend on the device and operating-system version.
- Mac screen shortcuts are reliable for visible pixels but are not a scrolling webpage capture.
- Web Archives retain links only while their destination pages remain available, and individual pages may restrict saving.
- For repeatable captures, use a fixed viewport, wait condition and output format. Decide whether you need an image or PDF before automating.
- With ScreenshotNeo, cache hits and unsuccessful page outcomes are not billed, and each response states the billing outcome in headers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start an iPad screenshot without pressing its buttons?
Yes. Apple documents Apple Pencil corner swipe, Siri and AssistiveTouch as alternate ways to initiate the screenshot; choose Full Page afterward.
Is a Full Page capture an interactive webpage?
No. It is a long screenshot image. Choose Web Archive on Mac when preserving links and page structure matters.
Why does the save screen look different from the instructions?
Screenshot controls and save destinations can vary with iOS or iPadOS versions and with screenshot display settings. Use the options shown after selecting Full Page.
Should I choose PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF for automation?
Use an image format when you need pixels for a report or visual comparison; choose PDF when the result should be a paginated document. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF.
