Tailscale announced a $100 million Series B on May 4, 2022, led by CRV and Insight Partners. The company said it would use the financing to keep developing its private networking product while investing in quality, security, customer service, sales and growth. This is a historical funding announcement: Tailscale later announced a $160 million Series C in April 2025.

Who invested in Tailscale’s $100 million Series B?

The May 4, 2022 round was led by CRV and Insight Partners. Tailscale also named existing investors Accel, Heavybit and Uncork Capital, along with angel and smaller investors. The announcement was written by co-founder Avery Pennarun. Tailscale’s announcement did not disclose a valuation.

SecurityWeek reported on May 6, 2022, that the financing brought the company’s total raised to $115 million. That is a reported cumulative funding figure, not the amount of the Series B itself. TechCrunch reported that the round valued Tailscale at over $1 billion Canadian dollars; the figure was in Canadian, not U.S., dollars. SecurityWeek’s coverage and TechCrunch’s report provide those contemporaneous figures.

Why did Tailscale raise the money?

Pennarun said the funding would let Tailscale continue its existing work at a sustainable pace, with attention to product quality, trust, security, customer service and profitability. The company also said it planned to invest in marketing, sales, distribution, enterprise and growth. These were management’s stated priorities in 2022; the announcement does not document how every dollar was ultimately spent. Tailscale’s Series B post describes the company’s plans.

What does Tailscale do?

SecurityWeek described Tailscale as a WireGuard-based private network connectivity service designed for zero-configuration setup and end-to-end encryption. It cited integrations including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Caddy Server, Syncthing and VS Code. TechCrunch described it as a way for users to connect devices and share software services, including as a possible corporate VPN replacement.

Those descriptions explain the product context behind the funding, but they are not independent tests of the service’s security, reliability or performance. In its 2025 announcement, Tailscale described its approach as identity-first networking: users connect to an app, teammate or service rather than relying on a fixed machine IP address. That is the company’s description of its design and positioning.

How the 2022 round compares with Tailscale’s later funding

Tailscale announced a Series C on April 8, 2025. The later announcement makes clear that the 2022 Series B is not the company’s latest funding round.

What the funding figures do—and do not—show

The $100 million and $160 million amounts are financing totals for separate rounds. SecurityWeek’s $115 million figure is a reported cumulative amount raised after the 2022 Series B, while TechCrunch’s over-$1-billion figure is a reported valuation in Canadian dollars. None of these figures establishes company revenue or a current valuation. TechCrunch said Tailscale did not disclose revenue in 2022; that dated report does not establish its present revenue.
