Both messages can be correct: Tailscale being connected means its client and tailnet path are active; it does not guarantee that a particular app’s service is listening, permitted, or reachable at the address and port the app uses. Diagnose the path, permissions, address, firewall, and service as separate layers rather than treating the Tailscale indicator as an app-level test.
What “Connected” does—and doesn’t—tell you
Tailscale’s status describes its client and connectivity to other tailnet devices. An app needs more: the correct destination address, permission to reach it, a network path, and a service accepting connections at the intended port. A failure at any of those later steps can coexist with a connected Tailscale client. Tailscale’s troubleshooting guidance is organized around checking connectivity to other tailnet devices; for this symptom, also verify the app’s own destination and service.
Work through these layers in order:
- Device and tailnet: Is the PC visible to the other device in Tailscale?
- Path: Can the Tailscale daemon reach the PC, and by what route?
- Permission: Do tailnet policy and firewalls allow traffic to the destination and app port?
- Address: Is the app using the intended Tailscale IP, hostname, or subnet-routed LAN address?
- Service: Is the intended app service running and accepting connections at that address and port?
Check whether Tailscale can see and reach the PC
Confirm device status
On both devices, check the Tailscale client version and run tailscale status. Confirm that the PC appears in the output and note whether the path is direct or relayed. If the PC is missing, resolve its client status or tailnet access policy before investigating the app.

From the device running the app, run tailscale ping <PC-name-or-Tailscale-IP>. This checks Tailscale daemon connectivity and reports the path, such as direct, peer relay, or DERP. Tailscale recommends this command to verify a device’s connection to other tailnet devices in its device connectivity troubleshooting guide.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
A relayed response still means there is a path. A relay may affect performance, but it does not by itself show that the PC is unreachable. Use tailscale status or tailscale ping to identify the path rather than assuming that only a direct connection counts.
Compare tests without confusing their scope
If the result is unclear, compare ping <Tailscale-IP> with tailscale ping --tsmp <PC-name-or-Tailscale-IP>. An operating-system ping tests ICMP through the host networking stack. tailscale ping --tsmp tests through WireGuard while bypassing that stack. These checks do not test whether the app’s service is listening, and an ICMP failure alone is inconclusive because a firewall may block ICMP. See Tailscale’s connectivity troubleshooting and TCP connection troubleshooting.

Check the address the app actually uses
Find the exact host or IP address configured in the app. If possible, try the PC’s Tailscale IP as a diagnostic. If that works while the app’s usual address does not, the problem is more likely to involve name resolution or the route to the usual address than the basic Tailscale path.
- Tailscale hostname: Check the tailnet’s DNS settings and whether the name resolves to the intended PC.
- LAN address: Check whether the app is using a subnet address and whether the relevant subnet route is available and being used.
- Tailscale IP: Confirm the app is targeting the correct PC and not a stale or incorrect address.
Tailscale’s guidance covers DNS troubleshooting and subnet routers and routes. A successful test to one address does not establish that a different hostname or LAN route works.

Check policy, firewalls, and the app service
Confirm access is allowed
Review tailnet ACLs or grants to ensure the connecting device is allowed to reach the PC’s destination IP or subnet and the app’s port. Then review the PC’s local firewall and any network firewall between the devices. A Tailscale path can exist while a policy or firewall blocks the particular traffic the app needs.
Verify the service endpoint
On the PC, confirm that the intended service is running and listening on the address and port the app targets. The correct port depends on the app and its configuration; there is no universal port to try for this symptom. Also check whether the service is bound only to a local interface rather than the interface or address reachable from the connecting device. Tailscale’s TCP connection troubleshooting guide can help narrow down TCP-specific failures.

If the path is relayed or unavailable
If Tailscale reports a relay, or the expected path cannot be established, run tailscale netcheck and check both devices’ internet access and the network’s restrictions on Tailscale traffic. A relay may be a valid fallback path; investigate it as a connectivity or performance clue, not as proof that the app service is blocked. Tailscale documents network checks in its netcheck guide and connection paths in its connection types documentation.
Do not start by disabling a firewall or broadly opening inbound access. Identify the specific traffic that is blocked and scope any necessary change to the relevant destination and port. Tailscale cautions that some firewall workarounds can make other traffic easier to reach; review its firewall guidance before changing network rules.

Read the results as a sequence, not a single verdict
| Result | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
The PC is absent from tailscale status |
The expected device is not currently visible in that status output. | Check the PC’s Tailscale client and tailnet access policy. |
tailscale ping fails |
The Tailscale daemon test did not confirm a path to that target. | Confirm the target name or IP, device status, policy, and network connectivity. |
tailscale ping succeeds through a relay |
A relayed Tailscale path exists. | Check app address, permissions, firewall, and service; investigate path performance separately if needed. |
OS ping fails but TSMP responds |
WireGuard-level testing succeeded while the host-stack ICMP test did not. | Check ICMP filtering and continue testing the app’s actual TCP or other service traffic. |
| The Tailscale IP works but the app’s hostname or LAN address does not | The issue may be specific to name resolution or subnet routing. | Check DNS settings or subnet-route availability for the address the app uses. |
| The path and address are correct, but the app still fails | The basic Tailscale path alone does not explain the app failure. | Check tailnet permissions, host/network firewalls, and whether the service listens on the expected port and interface. |
