Choose a tailgate power station by matching three things to your setup: the energy your devices will use, the watts they need at the same time, and the ports and weather protection they require. Then weigh portability and recharging options. A larger watt-hour rating does not, by itself, prove a station can start or run a particular appliance.
Start with the power your tailgate setup needs
Capacity and output answer different questions. Capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), is stored energy: it helps estimate how long devices may run. Output, measured in watts (W), is the rate at which the station can deliver power. Check both; neither number alone determines whether a station suits your gear.
Estimate energy use in watt-hours
List the devices you plan to use and how long you expect to use each. If a device’s power draw is available in watts, multiply that draw by its hours of use to estimate energy in watt-hours. Add the estimates for devices you expect to use during the outing, then compare the total with the station’s published capacity.

This is a planning estimate, not a runtime guarantee. Conversion losses and a reserve reduce the energy available to devices, and actual runtime varies with the load. Avoid dividing capacity by one device’s rated watts and treating the result as exact.

Check continuous and startup power
For AC equipment, compare each device’s operating draw with the station’s continuous AC output rating. If a device has a startup surge, compare that demand with the station’s peak or surge rating as well. Add the wattage of devices likely to run simultaneously and make sure the combined load fits the station’s continuous output.
This matters for questions such as, “How many watts does a power station need to run a mini fridge?” The answer depends on the particular fridge’s operating draw and startup demand, plus any other gear running at the same time. Without those figures, a capacity rating alone cannot establish compatibility.

Match the ports to your devices
Count the connections you will actually use, then confirm what each port can deliver. A station with many sockets may still be a poor fit if it lacks the right connector or per-port output.
- AC outlets: for equipment with standard plugs; confirm the station’s continuous and peak AC ratings.
- USB-A and USB-C: for phones and other electronics; check the wattage and, for USB-C, the supported charging protocol.
- DC or 12 V outputs: for compatible gear; verify the device’s connector and voltage requirements.
When several devices will be connected, check whether the stated output is per port or shared across ports, where that information is available. Do not assume that socket count tells you charging speed or total usable power.

Understand the weather protection claim
Outdoor use does not automatically mean a station is waterproof. An IP rating specifies a level of protection; a general phrase such as “weather resistant” does not give the same detail. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the model, keep the station out of standing water, and do not expose it to conditions its rating and manual do not support.
For example, Goal Zero lists an IPX4 water-resistance rating for its Yeti 700, while BLUETTI lists IP65 for the AC60. Westinghouse describes the iGen400s shell as weather resistant, but its inspected product page does not state an IP rating. These are manufacturer-published claims, not independent exposure tests.

| RELiON Outlaw | 921.6 Wh; 1,000 W pure sine wave inverter and 2,000 W peak (RELiON). | Multiple USB and 12 V connections; port-specific wattages are not stated here (RELiON). | Not stated here (RELiON). | 32 lb (RELiON). |
Balance capacity against portability
A larger capacity can provide more energy for an outing, but may be harder to carry from a parking space to the tailgate. The published weights above show a broad spread, from the Westinghouse iGen400s at 5.53 lb to the RELiON Outlaw at 32 lb. Consider the carrying distance, who will move the station, and whether its size and handles fit your setup. Do not infer dimensions or ease of handling from capacity alone.

Decide whether solar recharging is useful
Solar can help replenish a station during extended use away from grid power, but compatibility and conditions matter. Before choosing a panel, check the station’s maximum solar input, acceptable voltage, connector, and supported panel compatibility. Actual recharge depends on conditions and the station’s input limits; a panel’s advertised wattage is not a promise of a particular recharge time.
Also consider how you will recharge before and after the outing. Compare the model’s AC, vehicle, and solar input options and confirm any required cable or panel is compatible. The specifications listed above do not establish current prices, retailer availability, or comparative real-world performance.
