Tact is a proposed edible pregnancy-test concept that would let blind and low-vision users feel a result on their tongues. It is not a clinically validated or commercially available test: as of the Smithsonian Magazine’s October 6, 2026, report, its designer was still working to integrate its sensing material, with clinical testing and regulatory work still ahead.
How the proposed Tact test is meant to work
Design master’s student Sneha Rao developed Tact with advice from Wayne Chung, a biomedical engineering expert at Carnegie Mellon. The concept uses saliva and a gelatin matrix integrated with a DNA aptamer intended to bind to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone associated with pregnancy.
If the device detects hCG, its surface is designed to form raised bumps that a user can feel with their tongue. The proposed patterns are both sides swelling for a positive result, one side for a negative result, and no swelling for an invalid result. These are intended behaviors, not demonstrated test results.

- RESULTS IN 3 MINUTES: With this 3-count box of First Response Early Result Pregnancy Tests, get accurate results in 3 minutes, sooner than any other early detection test (2); 6 days before the day of your missed period
- NO EARLY DETECTION PREGNANCY TEST TELLS YOU FASTER (2): With reliable results in 3 minutes, no early detection pregnancy test gives you results sooner than First Response Early Result Pregnancy Tests
- OVER 99% ACCURATE: Early Result early pregnancy test is over 99% accurate at detecting pregnancy hormone levels on the day of your expected period (3) so you can have confidence in the results
- CONVENIENT & PORTABLE: Each disposable test is discreetly sized and individually wrapped so you can test anytime and anywhere
- SIMPLE TO USE AND READ: Place test tip in urine stream for 5 seconds and wait 3 minutes for results; after 3 minutes, this pregnancy test shows 2 pink lines for a pregnant result and 1 pink line to indicate a not pregnant result
Why an independently readable test matters
Many home pregnancy tests communicate their result through lines or color changes. Access can be difficult before a user even reaches that step: packaging may contain expiration information and instructions that are not accessible, and performing the test can itself present challenges. Faint lines can also be hard to interpret for some people with usable vision.
As Stephanie Enyart, the American Foundation for the Blind’s chief public policy and research officer, put it: “Pregnancy tests are inaccessible both because they must be read visually and because the packaging and instructions are often inaccessible.”

The issue is also privacy. Someone who cannot read a result may have to ask another person for help or send an image for interpretation. The Smithsonian feature recounts Joanne Hewitson’s concern about “never being able to take a pregnancy test alone.” Eleanor Southwood, then chair of the Royal National Institute of Blind People, expressed the broader goal in a 2020 Wall Street Journal article: “The dream is to buy any pregnancy test with the knowledge that it’s accessible.”

How Tact compares with current options
| Approach | How the result is read | Evidence and availability | Privacy considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional home test | Typically, a visual indicator such as lines or color changes; packaging, instructions, and expiration information may also create access barriers. | Current products exist, but the report does not assess individual products or establish which are accessible to blind users. | Reading the result may require help or an image-sharing workaround. |
| Tact concept | Proposed raised texture changes on an edible gelatin lollipop, felt with the tongue. | Still in development in the October 6, 2026, report; no Tact clinical performance or commercial availability is established. | Designed to support independent result reading, but that benefit has not been demonstrated in a validated product. |
| Phone-based visual assistance | A person or technology interprets an image of a conventional test. | Discussed as a workaround, not as an equivalent to a validated accessible pregnancy test. | Sharing an image or involving another person can compromise privacy. |
What is—and is not—known about accuracy and timing
The Smithsonian report relays Rao’s statement that saliva hCG research could provide “a 96 percent accurate result.” It does not identify the underlying study, its population, or the test used. The figure is therefore an attributed claim, not evidence of Tact’s accuracy.

- EASY-TO-READ RESULTS: Two lines means you are pregnant. It does not matter how faint or dark (or how wide) the lines are

- RESULTS 6 DAYS SOONER: Can tell you 6 days sooner than your missed period (5 days before you expect your period)[2]
- DETECTS hCG HORMONE: Can detect even low levels of the “pregnancy hormone” (hCG) in your urine[3]
Enyart raises unresolved questions about when a saliva test could detect pregnancy and whether its reliability would be consistent with urine testing. The report also gives her general comparison that blood tests can produce a result 7 to 10 days after conception and urine tests in 12 to 14 days. Those are not universal timelines: the report does not provide a primary clinical source, and timing depends on the test and circumstances.
Nothing in the report establishes that Tact is as accurate as an established test, detects pregnancy earlier, or can replace medical follow-up. Anyone using a pregnancy test should follow its instructions and contact a health-care provider to confirm a result or discuss next steps.

Development, regulation, and availability
Rao’s next steps, as described in the October 6, 2026, report, are clinical testing and regulatory groundwork. The feature does not report that Tact has been clinically validated, approved, or launched for sale. Rao’s stated aim is to pursue licensing or a partnership with a diagnostics manufacturer; that is a future goal, not an announced retail release.

What Tact could change if it is validated
Tact addresses a real design challenge: accessibility means more than making the final result perceptible. A genuinely independent test would need accessible instructions and packaging, a usable way to check expiration, a reliable testing process, and a result users can interpret privately. The concept’s tactile output is promising as a design direction, but its performance and practical accessibility remain to be demonstrated.
