If T-Mobile tells you it is moving your older plan, check the new plan’s full monthly cost and terms before deciding whether the change is an improvement. Reports in June and July 2026 described some legacy-plan customers being moved on July 13, with possible increases of up to $6 per voice or home-internet line. T-Mobile said some customers would see no change. The reports do not identify every affected account or establish what any particular customer will pay, so your notice and account details are the reliable guide.
Is T-Mobile raising your bill or moving your plan?
Not necessarily. The reported migration concerned some customers on older plans, not every T-Mobile customer. The reports described increases of up to $6 per voice or home-internet line, but also quoted T-Mobile saying some customers would see no change to their monthly bill. No complete list of affected plans or universal price schedule was published. Check your own notification and account before assuming either that your bill will rise or that it will stay the same. Tom’s Guide’s June 2026 report covers the reported change.
Why T-Mobile says it is retiring older plans
T-Mobile told Tom’s Guide: “We’re retiring our oldest plans, some of which were built nearly 15 years ago – in the 3G and 4G eras, and well before our 5G network was fully deployed. Customers will transition to modern plans that provide access to America’s best wireless technology, enhanced features and a 5-year price guarantee for peace of mind. Some customers will see no change to their monthly bill, while some will see a modest adjustment. Every customer moved to a new plan will keep their current benefits while gaining improvements in network and service experiences.” That is the company’s rationale; the report does not independently verify that every customer will experience every claimed improvement.
What to check in your notice
- The date the change takes effect and the name of the proposed plan.
- The new monthly total for your account, including all paid lines, recurring fees, add-ons and any perk that may now cost extra.
- Whether the features you currently use—such as hotspot data, international service or streaming benefits—remain included and on what terms.
- Any action or deadline stated in the notice, and whether your signed-in account shows plan options or details not shown publicly.
Plan options can be account-specific. Kiplinger notes that some options may only appear after signing in, and gives examples of features changing or a perk carrying an additional charge; those examples should not be treated as changes that apply to every account. See Kiplinger’s discussion of T-Mobile plan migrations.

What the 5-Year Price Guarantee does—and does not establish
T-Mobile describes its five-year commitment as applying to eligible plan prices for talk, text and 5G data. In comments reported by Fierce Network, a spokesperson said: “where we’ve committed to not raising prices, those prices are not being adjusted. A large percentage of people will see no price change.” The company’s statement does not establish that every account qualifies or that every component of a bill is frozen. Check your plan’s eligibility and terms, and separate the plan price from fees, add-ons, equipment payments and other bill components. A legacy-plan retirement and the scope of a price commitment are related, but they are not the same question. Fierce Network reported the spokesperson’s clarification.
What an advertising review concluded
On January 8, 2026, BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division (NAD) said the record supported T-Mobile’s claim that its customers had experienced at most one increase in the price of talk, text and data plans during the preceding ten years. NAD recommended that T-Mobile discontinue its challenged comparison claiming “10 price hikes in two years” for AT&T and Verizon, finding the record did not show those competitors’ customers together had ten increases in that period. NAD also recommended discontinuing challenged claims that could imply universal satellite coverage. T-Mobile said it would appeal. These were recommendations in an advertising review, not a court judgment or a final ruling after appeal. The findings concern specific advertising claims; they do not determine what a particular customer’s migration will cost or whether every bill item is covered by the guarantee. How to decide whether a new plan is worth accepting
Compare your current account with the proposed account, not just the plan names. Use the monthly amount you actually pay for all lines and add-ons, then weigh the features you use against the features you would have to replace or pay for elsewhere.

Compare the parts that affect your household
- Total cost: Compare the actual monthly account total, not a single-line advertised rate. Include all paid lines, recurring fees and add-ons.
- Coverage where you use your phone: Consider home, work, regular travel and indoor locations. A national coverage footprint does not guarantee the same experience at your address.
- Data and hotspot: Check high-speed data and hotspot allowances, plus any network-management terms that matter for your use.
- Useful benefits: Count a perk as a saving only if you would otherwise pay for it. Note whether it expires or its terms change.
- Support and convenience: Include the value you place on retail locations, customer support and account features.
T-Mobile says it engineers its network for consistent high-speed data, but its network-management page also states: “at times and at locations where the number of customers using the network exceeds available network resources, customers will experience reduced data speeds.” “Unlimited” or a plan name therefore does not mean identical speeds in every place and at every time. T-Mobile’s network-management policy describes this qualification.

Use survey results as context, not a personal forecast
Consumer Reports’ most recent member survey in its 2025 buying guide found that 56 percent of members who had recently switched carriers said they saved money. That is a survey result, not a prediction that switching will save you money. Consumer Reports explains ways to compare and save on phone plans.
In JD Power’s 2025 study, based on feedback from 56,450 customers, T-Mobile scored 626 out of 1,000 and ranked highest in the mobile network operator postpaid segment; it scored 617 and ranked highest in the mobile network operator prepaid segment. Consumer Cellular led the MVNO postpaid segment and Mint Mobile led the MVNO prepaid segment. These rankings apply to the study’s segments and year, not to your local coverage or the value of a specific plan. JD Power’s Carl Lepper, senior director of technology, media and telecom, said: “The findings show that value is the most important driver of the overall experience, followed closely by service quality.” See JD Power’s 2025 study results.

Should you switch phone plans or compare an MVNO?
Consider shopping around if the account-level comparison shows a meaningful cost or feature mismatch. Prepaid plans and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are options to compare, not automatic upgrades: a lower price may come with different terms, coverage or service expectations. Compare each candidate on the same axes—total household cost, coverage where you use service, data and hotspot terms, useful benefits, and support. JD Power separates carrier and MVNO results by prepaid and postpaid segment, while Consumer Reports discusses savings from switching; neither establishes that a particular alternative will be cheaper or work better for you.
If the proposed plan costs more, identify which specific feature or service improvement you value enough to justify the difference. If it costs the same, still check whether a benefit you rely on changes. If you cannot determine the new total or terms from the notice, use your signed-in account or contact T-Mobile before relying on a general report or an advertised plan name.
