systemd_commander is a free, keyboard-driven terminal interface for browsing systemd service units, starting, stopping, restarting, reloading, enabling, disabling, and editing them, and reading their journal logs. It suits administrators who already work in a Linux shell and want those routine tasks under one set of function-key shortcuts instead of typing a separate systemctl or journalctl command for each one. The project’s repository documents building it from source with CMake. This article covers what it can change, how its two programs differ, how to build it, and where it cannot replace the command line.
What systemd_commander is
The project describes systemd_commander as a standalone terminal UI for systemd service management and journalctl log browsing. It ships two programs:
- systemd_commander browses and controls service units.
- journal_viewer browses journal entries.
The repository says the code was extracted from ros2_console_tools and builds as a plain CMake project with no ROS 2 dependencies, so you do not need a ROS 2 installation to use it. LinuxLinks, in its overview of the project, describes it as a terminal user interface for managing systemd services and browsing journal logs and names Marton Juhasz as the developer.

The README documents the following service-unit actions:
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
- Listing loaded and installed service unit files.
- Inspecting the details of a selected service.
- Starting, stopping, restarting, and reloading a unit. These change the unit’s current runtime state.
- Enabling and disabling a unit file. These change whether the unit is configured to start at boot.
- Editing a unit file.
- Opening the selected service’s logs.
Because the tool can enable, disable, and edit units as well as start and stop them, it can change boot behaviour and service configuration, not just what is running. Treat it with the same care as the commands it wraps.
Keyboard shortcuts
The README lists these function-key mappings. The project notes they can change in later versions, so check the help screen (F1) on your installed build.
| Screen | Key | Action |
|---|---|---|
| General | F1 | Help |
| General | F10 | Exit |
| Service list | F2 | Start |
| Service list | F3 | Stop |
| Service list | F5 | Restart |
| Service list | F6 | Reload |
| Service list | F7 | Enable |
| Service list | F8 | Disable |
| Service list | F9 | Open logs |
| journal_viewer | F2 | Switch between live and snapshot modes |
| journal_viewer | F5 | Priority filter |
| journal_viewer | F6 | Text filter |
| journal_viewer | F7 | Journal namespace selection |
Log browsing with journal_viewer
journal_viewer offers a live-refresh mode and a snapshot mode, which lets you freeze the output and read it without new entries moving the screen. It also filters by priority and by text, selects the journal namespace, and opens a popup with the detailed view of an entry.

When you open logs from the service list with F9, the tool applies the service’s LogNamespace setting. A service that writes to a non-default journal namespace therefore shows up in its own logs without you selecting the namespace by hand. The project’s README documents this behaviour; it is not a claim about every systemd setup.
Privileges
The README states that systemd_commander relies on the local systemctl and journalctl commands. It does not require the whole interface to run as root. Instead, it requests elevated privileges for the specific operations that need them, such as starting or stopping a unit. Running it as an ordinary user is the expected mode, and you will be prompted when an action requires more access.
Building from source
The project’s build requirements are CMake 3.16 or newer, a C++17 compiler, and the ncursesw library. GTest is optional and only needed for the parser tests. The repository does not establish a current distribution package for the tool, so the source build below is the documented route. Package names for CMake, the compiler, and the ncurses development files differ between distributions, and this article does not list them.

The repository does not state a minimum systemd version, so check that your distribution’s systemd provides the systemctl and journalctl behaviour the tool depends on before relying on it.
systemd concepts you need first
SUSE’s Managing systemd Services guide, published 2026-10-01, defines systemd resources as units managed through unit files. It calls systemctl the central tool for examining and controlling the system and service manager, and states: systemctl is the central management tool for controlling the init system.
The distinction the tool depends on is the one the SUSE guide draws between two kinds of change:

- Durable and Reliable: This USB keyboard features a curved space bar, spill-resistant design (2), durable keys that can withstand 10 million keystrokes, and sturdy, adjustable tilt legs
- Comfortable, Familiar Typing: You’ll enjoy a comfortable and familiar typing experience thanks to the deep-profile keys and standard layout with full-size F-keys and number pad
- Full-size Sculpted Mouse: The high-definition optical USB mouse puts comfort and control in your hands with smooth, accurate tracking and an ambidextrous shape that feels good hour after hour
- Simple Set-Up: Simply plug the keyboard and mouse into the USB ports on your desktop, laptop, or netbook and you're ready to work; compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
- Clear and Convenient: The bold, bright white and long-lasting characters make the keys on this PC or laptop keyboard easy to read and extra durable
- Enable or disable controls whether a service starts at boot.
- Start or stop controls the service’s current runtime state.
A service can be enabled but stopped, or running but disabled. Check both states before assuming a service will behave the same after a reboot.
Troubleshooting with the same tools
SUSE recommends checking a service’s status and querying its journal with journalctl -u SERVICE, where SERVICE is the unit name. systemd_commander’s inspect and log screens give you the same information interactively.

One warning from the SUSE guide applies no matter which front end you use: restarting or terminating D-Bus on a running system is not recommended or supported, because it disrupts communication between systemd clients and the service manager. Do not select a D-Bus unit for a restart as a routine step.

Compared with direct commands
The table below compares the tool with typing systemctl and journalctl directly. Where the sources do not state a value for a direct-command comparison, the cell says so.
| Area | systemd_commander | Direct commands |
|---|---|---|
| Input style | Keyboard-driven function-key menus (README) | Typed commands and flags |
| Lifecycle actions | Start, stop, restart, reload, enable, disable (README) | Supported by systemctl (SUSE guide documents start/stop and enable/disable) |
| Unit-file editing | Documented in the README | Not stated in the SUSE guide |
| Journal integration | journal_viewer with live/snapshot modes and priority and text filters (README) | journalctl -u SERVICE (SUSE guide) |
| Journal namespaces | Namespace selection; applies LogNamespace from F9 (README) |
Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article |
| Privilege behaviour | Requests privileges only when an operation needs them (README) | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article |
| Installation | Documented source build with CMake 3.16+, C++17, and ncursesw; distribution packaging not established | Part of the systemd installation on your system |
The tool is most useful when you move between many services in one session and want to read logs immediately after an action. For a one-off change in a script, or on a machine where you cannot build software, direct commands remain the simpler option.

The Bottom Line
systemd_commander is a practical choice if you manage several services on a Linux machine from a terminal and want status, lifecycle actions, and logs in one keyboard-driven interface. Before you rely on it, confirm your systemd version supports the commands it wraps, build from the documented CMake steps unless your distribution packages it, and keep the start/stop versus enable/disable distinction in mind.
