On March 28, 2022, edge-AI chipmaker Syntiant announced that it had closed a $55 million funding round and shipped more than 20 million Neural Decision Processors (NDPs). The figures mark a financing and production milestone at that time—not a statement of the company’s current funding or shipment pace.

What Syntiant makes

Syntiant develops Neural Decision Processors: purpose-built, low-power deep-learning processors for always-on tasks involving voice, audio, sensors and images. These chips are designed for integration into devices such as earbuds, wearables, smartphones, smart speakers, laptops, automobiles and consumer or industrial IoT products. Those are application categories named by the company, not a list of specific consumer devices endorsed or sold by Syntiant.

The 2022 release characterized its processors as typically delivering more than 100 times the efficiency and more than 10 times the throughput of low-power microcontroller-based solutions. These are Syntiant’s comparisons; the release did not specify enough benchmark conditions to treat them as universal or independently verified results.

What the 2022 funding and shipment figures mean

Syntiant said it had closed $55 million in new funding and shipped more than 20 million NDPs cumulatively. “Chips” here means Neural Decision Processors shipped by the company, not 20 million finished consumer devices containing them. The release also reported more than 50 customer engagements, which should not be read as 50 deployed customers.

The reported total capital raised differs by source. Syntiant’s March 28, 2022 announcement said investment since its 2017 founding exceeded $100 million. An EE Times report published March 30, 2022 described the total raise as $120 million. These are distinct source wordings; the $120 million figure is EE Times’ report, not a number to substitute for Syntiant’s statement.

Who invested, and how Syntiant planned to use the money

Syntiant named Renesas Electronics Corporation, Millennium Technology Value Partners and Mirae Asset Capital among five new investors. Existing investors also participated. The company said the proceeds would strengthen its software capabilities and accelerate deployment of its planned third-generation Syntiant Core architecture.

In the announcement, CEO Kurt Busch described the shipment milestone as part of a pivotal period for the company as device makers’ demand for edge AI grew. Millennium Technology Value Partners partner Jay Chong emphasized that, alongside hardware benchmarks, ease of integration and implementation matter to semiconductor customers. Both were contemporaneous comments in the company’s release, not independent validation of product performance.

What happened after the announcement

The 2022 funding news should not be confused with later product milestones. Syntiant’s company history records the NDP115 in 2023 and the NDP250 in 2024, placing the 20-million-plus shipment milestone in 2022.

NDP250: a later Core 3 product

On April 9, 2024, Syntiant introduced the NDP250, describing it as a Core 3 processor for imaging, speech and sensor applications in power-constrained devices. The company listed person detection, object classification, automatic speech recognition, text to speech and motion tracking as example workloads. Its release cited more than 30 GOPS of hardware acceleration and support for more than 6 million neural parameters in 8-bit mode.

Syntiant said the NDP250 delivered five times the tensor throughput of previous-generation hardware. That is a company comparison, not an independent benchmark result. The same 2024 release said the chip was sampling at the time; that dated statement does not establish current retail availability.

A later retrospective description also needs careful reading: a 2026 SEC registration-statement search result says the company surpassed 20 million NDP devices and AI software models shipped since inception by 2021. Because that wording combines devices and software models and differs in timing and emphasis from the March 2022 release, it is not interchangeable with the original claim that Syntiant had shipped more than 20 million NDPs.
