The Synology DS415+ remains a capable four-bay NAS on paper, with dual Gigabit Ethernet, hardware encryption support, and Synology’s DSM software platform. But it is discontinued, DSM updates are End of Life, and Synology disclosed a clock-signal component erratum affecting this model. For most buyers who need a NAS with ongoing security updates, that makes a used DS415+ a difficult choice to recommend; it is more compelling as an existing device or a carefully evaluated low-cost option for a noncritical role.
What the DS415+ offers
Synology announced the DS415+ on September 23, 2014, positioning it for small and medium-sized businesses and enthusiast home users who wanted centralized storage, backup, and file sharing. Its four drive bays accept 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drives, which are sold separately. The core specifications are:
- Intel Atom C2538 quad-core processor running at 2.4 GHz
- 2 GB of DDR3 memory
- Hardware AES-NI encryption support
- Two Gigabit Ethernet ports
- Two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and one eSATA port
For storage configuration, Synology’s datasheet lists Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 6. The best choice depends on whether the priority is capacity, redundancy, or a particular drive layout; RAID and SHR do not replace a separate backup.
How fast is the DS415+?
In its 2014 launch announcement, Synology reported average read and write speeds above 228 MB/s and 233 MB/s, respectively, with link aggregation. It also reported encrypted transfer speeds above 232 MB/s read and 206 MB/s write in the test setup described in that announcement. These are historical manufacturer results, not independent benchmark measurements or guaranteed speeds for a particular network, drive set, or workload. Link aggregation also requires compatible network equipment and configuration, and does not make a single-client connection equivalent to the combined capacity of both ports.

Is the DS415+ still worth buying?
For most people shopping for a primary NAS in 2026, the biggest concern is support rather than the hardware feature list. Synology’s product-status listing marks the DS415+ as discontinued, DSM updates as “End of Life,” and technical support as “Limited.” Synology defines this End of Life category as: “Future firmware, software, and security/vulnerability updates are discontinued.” That status makes the unit a poor fit for anyone who requires ongoing vendor security updates.
Whether a secondhand unit is worth considering also depends on its condition, documented repair history, the price of the enclosure and drives together, and how you plan to use it. The available evidence does not establish current used-market prices or a failure rate for units sold today, so neither a bargain price nor a seller’s assurance can settle the question by itself.

- Consider it only with care if you can verify the unit’s condition and compatible drives, the total cost is attractive, and you can accept the lack of future DSM security updates.
- Look for a supported alternative if this will hold important files, face untrusted networks, or serve as your main backup destination and you need continuing software security support.
- If you already own one, assess your exposure and plan backups or migration rather than assuming an older DSM build will receive current fixes.
What was the clock-signal component issue?
On February 18, 2017, Synology issued a product-status notice about an erratum in a clock-signal component used in certain products, including the DS415+. The company said accelerated degradation was rare, even after prolonged, heavy use, and stated: “This component’s erratum is not known to cause data loss, nor any safety hazards.” Synology also announced an additional year of warranty coverage for the named affected models at that time.

This was Synology’s public statement in 2017. It does not establish the condition of an individual used DS415+, give a failure probability for devices being sold now, or show that the historical warranty extension is available to a current buyer.

Which hard drives are compatible?
The DS415+ needs SATA drives, and Synology’s model-specific compatibility list includes verified 3.5-inch SATA HDD examples from Seagate, Western Digital, and other manufacturers. Check Synology’s live DS415+ internal HDD/SSD compatibility list for the exact drive model and firmware before buying. Synology says the list can change, compatibility is not guaranteed, and support may be limited for unlisted products or issues caused by a drive or its firmware.
Do not treat the original datasheet’s capacity configuration as a definitive current maximum: the live compatibility list includes drives larger than the datasheet’s original four-by-six-terabyte configuration. A drive’s appearance on the list alone does not establish the usable capacity for every volume, filesystem, or DSM configuration, so verify those constraints for the planned setup.

- Bay count and usable capacity: Compare the number of bays and the capacity available under the intended SHR or RAID layout.
- Ongoing software support: Decide whether the alternative’s update status meets your security needs.
- Drive compatibility: Check the exact models and firmware on the relevant manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- Unit condition: Ask for evidence of repairs and inspect the enclosure and bays before relying on a used unit.
- Total cost: Include compatible drives, not just the enclosure.
- Network fit: Consider whether dual Gigabit ports and link aggregation are useful with your network hardware and workload.
