The BC500 and TC500 share the same core camera features; the main difference is their shape and mounting fit. The BC500 is a bullet camera suited to wall mounting, while the turret-style TC500 is aimed more naturally from a ceiling and adds IK10 impact protection. Both can send video over RTSP, but Surveillance Station is the route to Synology’s fuller feature set.

BC500 vs. TC500: the practical differences

Synology introduced both cameras in March 2023 as 5MP, all-weather IP cameras designed to work with Surveillance Station. Their shared specifications make installation geometry and physical protection the clearest reasons to choose one over the other.

Feature BC500 TC500
Camera style Bullet; conventional wall or outdoor-style placement Turret; ceiling-oriented placement and aiming
Impact protection IK rating not stated in the cited product specifications IK10, according to Synology’s comparison table
Resolution and frame rate Up to 2880 × 1620 (5MP) at 30 FPS Up to 2880 × 1620 (5MP) at 30 FPS
Horizontal field of view 110° 110°
Infrared night vision Up to 30 meters Up to 30 meters
Weather protection IP67 IP67
Connection and video formats IEEE 802.3af PoE; H.264/H.265; RTSP IEEE 802.3af PoE; H.264/H.265; RTSP

Synology lists people and vehicle detection and intrusion detection for both models. An independent TC500 review likewise described the cameras as practically alike apart from their physical design and mounting, while noting the TC500’s greater vandal resistance.

Which one suits your installation?

  • Choose the BC500 if a bullet camera fits your wall, eave or other mounting position better. Its familiar projecting body can make the intended viewing direction apparent, but check the bracket position and sightline before drilling.
  • Choose the TC500 for a ceiling-oriented view or where IK10 impact protection matters. Its turret form is suited to aiming from below a ceiling or soffit.

Neither shape guarantees coverage by itself: the 110° horizontal view is a useful reference, but the mounting height, distance to the subject and obstructions still determine what the camera can actually see.

Do the cameras require a Synology NAS?

Not for every use. Both cameras support RTSP, so a third-party recorder that accepts their RTSP stream may be able to record video. RTSP compatibility does not make that recorder equivalent to Surveillance Station, however, and the available camera configuration and analytics can differ. Synology recommends pairing them with Surveillance Station for complete functionality.

For the full Synology experience, plan on a Synology NAS or DVA running Surveillance Station 9.1 or later, as reported in the BC500 review. Synology says the BC500 and TC500 do not require purchasing or activating Surveillance Station device licenses. A reviewer also described a camera license as included; in practical terms, do not assume you need to buy an additional camera license for these models.

  • Peer-to-peer(P2P) connection, access live footage even if the internet connection drops, ensuring critical moments are captured
  • Security and compliance, ideal for sensitive applications, with US NDAA & TAA compliance

What works without a DVA?

The cameras provide people and vehicle detection and intrusion detection as listed in Synology’s product specifications. More advanced analytics are not all camera-only features: the BC500 review says people/vehicle counting, license-plate recognition and face recognition require DVA hardware. Synology’s FAQ specifically identifies a compatible DVA system as necessary for face recognition. Check the requirements for the exact analytics you want before choosing a NAS or recorder.

What happens if the NAS connection fails?

Both cameras can record to a microSD card when the NAS connection is lost. Synology documents card support up to 256GB. Its storage example estimates about 32GB per day for a 3 Mbps stream, which it says means a 256GB card can hold at least six days under that example bitrate. Actual retention depends on the stream and recording settings; that estimate is not a guarantee for every installation.

  • Ultra HD 4K 8MP Varifocal Lens with Optical Zoom
  • 1/1.8" Starlight Sensor and Hybrid White/IR LEDs for up to 31m (101ft) Color Night Vision
  • Edge License Plate Recognition Supported On-Camera
  • Weather and Impact Resistant with IP66/67 and IK10 ratings
  • Edge AI features including People & Vehicle Counting, Smoke Detection, Intrusion Detection, Instant Search, and Auto Tracking

Edge recording provides a local copy during a connection interruption, not a substitute for a working network recorder. In the BC500 review, the reviewer found that footage stored on the card was not directly viewable over the network. If you need to retrieve recordings, consider how you will access the camera and card, and test recovery as part of installation.

Power, mounting and setup costs

Both cameras use IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet. The cited specifications do not include a PoE switch or injector; Synology’s BC500 page also says its compatible 12V power adapter is not included. Budget for a suitable PoE source and Ethernet cabling, plus a microSD card if you want outage recording. A separate power adapter may be relevant if you are not powering the BC500 over PoE.

  • Product 1: No Device License Required
  • Product 2: Expanded 5.9 GHz spectrum support enables additional high-speed 80 and 160 MHz channels

The BC500 review reported that setup in Surveillance Station took a few minutes after mounting and cabling. That is a reviewer’s experience, not a promised setup time: camera placement, cable routing, network configuration and recorder setup can add work. Both models are wired rather than Wi-Fi cameras, and the TC500 review lists no PTZ capability, so plan to aim the camera physically during installation.

Security, privacy and support

Synology says both models support HTTPS and SRTP, scheduled firmware updates, and failover edge storage. The company also lists NDAA/TAA compliance. Those capabilities are relevant to a security deployment, but they do not replace good network practices such as restricting access to the camera and recorder.

The TC500 review praised local recording and Surveillance Station integration as privacy advantages. That is a reasonable fit for buyers who prefer footage managed on their own equipment. The supplied product information establishes RTSP and local recording, but not a particular cloud-backup plan or its current availability and price; do not assume off-site redundancy is included.

Synology lists a three-year hardware warranty in its launch announcement and current comparison table. Its lifecycle policy gives the BC500 firmware support from March 2023 through March 2028, and the TC500 from May 2023 through May 2028. These are the stated firmware-support periods, not a promise of support beyond those dates.

Are Synology’s cameras worth the premium?

They make the strongest case when you already run Surveillance Station and value its camera management, integration and local recording workflow. Buyers get PoE, edge recording, detection features and a no-additional-device-license arrangement for these models, alongside the convenience of managing camera settings and firmware in Synology’s system.

The trade-off is ecosystem dependence for the fullest functionality and added installation costs for PoE infrastructure, cabling and optional memory. A generic RTSP recorder may suit a simpler setup, but do not assume it will expose the same analytics or management controls. Compare the complete installation cost and the features you will actually use with third-party PoE cameras before paying a premium for Synology integration.

For price context, Dong Knows Tech cited a $219 suggested retail price for the BC500 in its 2023 review, while its TC500 review said that model cost over $200 at review time. Those are historical review-era figures, not verified current prices. The TC500 review rated it 8/10 and praised its rugged design, image and sound quality, integration and edge recording; it also criticized the cost, lack of included PoE injector or power adapter, lack of Wi-Fi and PTZ, and reliance on Synology NVRs for full use. The BC500 reviewer reported successful tests of motion detection, night vision and edge recording. These are reviewer observations, not laboratory benchmarks.
