Indian nationals need a visa to visit or stay in Switzerland. The right application depends on why you are travelling and how long you intend to stay: a Schengen C visa generally covers short visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while stays over 90 days for study or family reunification use a national D-visa process. Employment also requires the appropriate work authorization; a visa by itself does not permit work.

Choose a route by purpose and length of stay

First decide whether the trip is a short stay or a stay exceeding 90 days, then match the application to its purpose. The C/D distinction describes the visa route, not necessarily every permission needed after arrival. In particular, work authorization and long-stay decisions may involve Swiss cantonal authorities.

Purpose General route Decision or authorization point What to verify
Tourism or a short family/friend visit Schengen C visa; up to 90 days in any 180-day period Swiss representation processes the visa Current visit checklist, purpose evidence, funds, insurance, and any invitation or sponsorship evidence requested
Employment Appropriate entry visa plus work authorization; the applicable category depends on the case Competent canton or employment authority handles authorization; the representation issues the visa after required approval Employer and canton process, work duration and category, and current India work guidance
Study exceeding 90 days National D visa Competent canton reviews the long-stay application; the representation issues the visa after approval Student checklist, admission and financial evidence, translations, and appointment requirements
Family reunification exceeding 90 days National D visa Relevant cantonal migration office handles authorization; the representation issues the visa after approval Sponsor status, qualifying relationship, language and family evidence, and current checklist

This is a route guide, not a complete document checklist. The Embassy of Switzerland in India’s purpose-specific instructions and the responsible canton’s requirements govern an individual application.

Tourism and short family or friend visits

For tourism or a short visit to family or friends, the general route is a Schengen category C visa. Its limit is 90 days in any 180-day period, counted under the rolling Schengen short-stay rule—not a fresh 90 days for each country visited. A C visa is generally valid across the Schengen area unless the visa itself specifies otherwise.

Applicants should be ready to explain the trip’s purpose and circumstances and show adequate financial means for the stay and the return or onward journey. Swiss entry conditions also address a recognized, valid travel document and admissibility matters such as public order and checks against relevant information systems. Medical insurance is among the requirements identified for visa-required applicants; consult the route-specific instructions for the applicable coverage criteria.

A host’s invitation letter may be requested for a family or friend visit, but it should not be treated as universally mandatory. Use the current Swiss representation checklist for the precise supporting documents, appointment process, fee, and any invitation or sponsorship evidence required for your case.

Work: a visa is not work permission

Anyone travelling to Switzerland to take up gainful employment needs both the appropriate visa and work authorization. A job offer alone does not establish that authorization has been granted, and an entry visa does not itself confer the right to work. The employer and competent Swiss cantonal authority are involved in the authorization process; the exact route depends on the work category and circumstances.

For an India-based applicant seeking an entry visa for work, the Embassy’s general list includes cantonal authorization, a long-stay D application, a valid passport, a recent photograph, and the visa fee. This is not a substitute for the current case-specific checklist.

The Embassy’s guidance for stays not exceeding 90 days says to contact the Swiss representation. Separately, its India materials include a work-permit checklist for work of up to 120 days. These refer to distinct administrative contexts; do not infer that a single duration rule or checklist covers every short-term job. Ask the employer and the relevant Swiss authority which authorization and visa process applies before making travel plans.

Study: use the long-stay process for courses over 90 days

For study lasting more than 90 days, the general route is a national D visa and the Embassy of Switzerland in India’s student checklist. The Embassy forwards national-visa applications to the competent Swiss cantonal authorities for a decision; the Swiss representation can issue the visa only after the necessary approval.

The short-stay C category can include attending school or studying, depending on the circumstances and duration. A short course or study-related visit should therefore be assessed against the C-visa rules and the representation’s instructions rather than automatically treated as a long-stay student application.

There is no single document list established here for every student, institution, or canton. Check the current student checklist for admission evidence, proof of funds, education records, translation requirements, and any additional case-specific documents. Do not rely on a generic online list as exhaustive.

Family reunification: the canton assesses the long-stay case

Family reunification for a stay exceeding three months is handled through a national-visa process. The Embassy publishes a dedicated India checklist, and authorization is within the competence of the migration office of the relevant canton. The checklist includes evidence about the person in Switzerland—such as a copy of the host’s Swiss residence or work permit where applicable.

Eligibility and documents can depend on the sponsor’s status, the relationship, the applicant’s circumstances, the canton, and language requirements. A relationship label alone does not establish eligibility. Review the current family-reunification checklist and the canton’s instructions; the Embassy’s India guidance also points to separate information on proof of language skills.

How the application and decision process works

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) sets federal visa and entry guidance but does not issue visas. Swiss representations abroad handle visa issuance and refusals. For the long-stay matters described by the Embassy in India, the representation forwards the application to the competent Swiss canton, and issues the visa after the required approval. The underlying authorization and the entry visa are related but distinct parts of the process.

  1. Confirm the route. Identify your purpose and intended duration, then check whether the case falls under a short-stay C process, a national D process, or an employment authorization route with additional requirements.
  2. Use the correct official checklist. Start with the current Embassy of Switzerland in India checklist for visits, work, study, or family reunification, as applicable. For long stays, also identify the competent canton and review its instructions.
  3. Check practical filing details. Confirm the current fee, appointment channel, submission location, document format, translations, and insurance requirements with the Swiss representation and, where relevant, the canton. These details can change.
  4. Allow time for a decision. The Embassy of Switzerland in India gave an indicative national-visa processing estimate of approximately 8–12 weeks on its page published 19 January 2026, while warning that timing varies considerably with the canton and application details. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed service time.

Documents and entry conditions to plan for

Swiss authorities assess the purpose of travel and whether the applicant meets applicable entry and visa conditions. Depending on the route, these can include a recognized travel document, evidence supporting the purpose of travel, sufficient financial means, and medical insurance for visa-required applicants. Long-stay files may additionally require authorization or supporting evidence specific to work, study, or family reunification.

  • Use the checklist for your exact purpose and application location; do not assume that one set of documents works for every canton or applicant.
  • For visits, prepare to substantiate the itinerary and finances, and provide a host invitation or sponsorship materials if the checklist or authorities request them.
  • For work, confirm that the necessary cantonal authorization is in place before treating a visa application as permission to start employment.
  • For study and family reunification, follow the India-specific national-visa checklist and any additional canton instructions.
  • Before filing, recheck requirements with the Swiss Embassy in India and the responsible canton because checklists, appointments, and fees may change.
