Wi-Fi Calling lets a supported phone place and receive calls through a Wi-Fi internet connection using your carrier’s service. It can help when cellular reception is poor, but it does not automatically replace your mobile plan or make your phone independent of cellular service: support, charges, emergency calling, and what happens when Wi-Fi drops depend on your carrier, device, plan, and location.

What Wi-Fi Calling does

Wi-Fi Calling routes your carrier calls through an internet connection provided by a Wi-Fi network. Your carrier still supplies the calling service; the Wi-Fi access point supplies the internet path. The FCC describes the mobile network core as handling call routing and further processing, so this is not simply a call made by the router itself. See the FCC order on Wi-Fi Calling.

That distinction matters if you want to “ditch cellular.” You may be able to make and receive calls in places where cellular reception is weak or unavailable, provided Wi-Fi, internet access, your carrier, and your phone all support the feature. Wi-Fi Calling alone is not a substitute for a carrier subscription, and it does not guarantee that calls will continue if Wi-Fi fails or that the phone will never use cellular service.

What you need before turning it on

  • A phone and carrier that support Wi-Fi Calling in your country or region. Check with your carrier if you are unsure; the option may not appear on an unsupported device or line.
  • An available Wi-Fi network with working internet access. A Wi-Fi connection does not guarantee that every network will support calls. Apple notes, “Not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling.”
  • Your carrier’s emergency-service setup, which may require you to enter or confirm an address.
  • Current information from your carrier about call and messaging charges, roaming, and availability on your plan.

How to turn on Wi-Fi Calling

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Cellular.
  2. If you use multiple SIMs, select the line you want to configure.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  4. Follow any prompts to enable the feature and confirm or enter your emergency-service address.

Apple’s steps and availability guidance are in Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling. The feature’s availability depends on carrier and country or region.

On Android

  1. Open the Phone app and tap its menu, then Settings.
  2. Go to Network & internet > SIMs, select your carrier SIM, and tap Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling and follow any setup prompts.

Google’s Phone app guidance gives this path, but labels and menu locations may vary by phone, Android version, and carrier. If you cannot find the setting, check carrier support before assuming the phone is faulty. Google also advises checking with the carrier because charges may apply. See Make calls over Wi-Fi.

Can you call 911 over Wi-Fi?

Emergency calling over Wi-Fi can work differently from a call over cellular. Apple says that an emergency call uses cellular when available; if cellular is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, the call may use Wi-Fi. Location information may be used, and some carriers may rely on the emergency address registered to the account. The precise behavior depends on the platform, carrier, and location.

Keep your carrier’s emergency-service address current, and be ready to tell the dispatcher your exact location. For example, Verizon requires customers activating Wi-Fi Calling to confirm, update, or enter a US address for emergency personnel. Google Fi warns that a Wi-Fi or data 911 call may connect differently and that the caller’s location or number may not be shared; an internet or Wi-Fi outage can limit or prevent the call. Those are provider-specific policies, not universal guarantees. Review Verizon’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance or Google Fi’s emergency-calling guidance for the applicable service.

Apple also warns that emergency alerts may not be received while connected to Wi-Fi Calling. Do not assume Wi-Fi Calling provides the same emergency-call routing, location reporting, or alerts as cellular service. If you want to arrange a test, 911.gov says to contact your local 911 call center using its non-emergency number to schedule one; do not place an unannounced test call to 911. See 911.gov’s guidance on calling 911.

Are Wi-Fi calls free?

There is no universal cost answer. Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature, and charges can depend on the provider, plan, destination, and whether you are at home or abroad. Google’s Android guidance says charges may apply. Do not assume that using Wi-Fi makes every domestic or international call free, or that roaming rules no longer apply.

Before relying on it, check your carrier’s current terms for domestic calls and messages, international destinations, calls made while traveling, and any plan or device eligibility rules. Google Fi’s terms, for example, apply to that service and should not be generalized to other carriers.

What happens if Wi-Fi drops during a call?

A Wi-Fi or internet outage can interrupt calling. Whether an active call can move to cellular, and whether it does so seamlessly, depends on the phone and carrier. Do not count on every call switching over automatically. If you need to stay reachable, confirm your provider’s fallback behavior and maintain a usable alternative connection where possible.

How to fix Wi-Fi Calling that will not activate or work

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm that your carrier, plan, device, and location support Wi-Fi Calling. If the setting is missing, start with the carrier.
  2. Check the connection. Verify that Wi-Fi has internet access, then try another Wi-Fi network. Apple cautions that not every network works with Wi-Fi Calling.
  3. Review setup prompts. Make sure any required emergency-service address is confirmed and current.
  4. Toggle the feature and restart. Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and back on, then restart the phone.
  5. Update software. Install current available phone software, then check the setting again.
  6. Contact your carrier if it still fails. The issue may involve carrier provisioning, device eligibility, or plan terms.

A new router is not a general requirement. Consider home Wi-Fi equipment only if your existing network or internet connection is missing or inadequate; the feature itself does not establish that most users need new hardware.
