SwitchBot KATA Friends is a mobile AI companion robot offered in Noa and Niko designs. It is built to move around a home, respond to touch, speech and gestures, and return to a charging base—not just sit on a desk like a voice assistant. The trade-off is a substantial upfront cost plus a plan requirement after the trial or complimentary period. SwitchBot describes several capabilities, but the available evidence does not include independent testing, so navigation, responsiveness and real-world reliability remain unverified.

What SwitchBot KATA Friends is—and what it claims to do

SwitchBot positions KATA Friends as an AI pet and companion robot. Its international launch announcement on May 12, 2026, described the product as an expansion from home convenience and automation into companionship; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent finding. The launch listed Noa and Niko as the available character designs. SwitchBot’s launch announcement

According to SwitchBot, KATA Friends can interact through touch, voice and gestures, remember faces and interactions, move independently, avoid obstacles, map rooms with LiDAR and return to its charging nest. Its technology page lists 12 touch sensors. These are manufacturer claims and specifications; they do not establish how consistently the robot performs in a particular home. The published product page also claims 64 GB of internal storage and capacity for up to 100,000 photos. Those figures are not independently verified usable-capacity measurements. The company lists model-specific outfits and accessory sets, but does not establish that accessories are included with every purchase. SwitchBot’s product page

How much does KATA Friends cost?

Price depends on the market and the purchase terms shown at checkout. On the international product page accessed in 2026, a selected robot was displayed at US$699.99. The same page listed paid plans and said a plan is required once the free trial or complimentary period ends. Treat these as page-specific prices, not guaranteed worldwide or permanent rates. SwitchBot international product page

Option Displayed terms What to note
Selected robot US$699.99 International page display accessed in 2026; the price may vary by region or change.
Essential US$14.99 per month Monthly plan displayed on the international page accessed in 2026.
Premium US$399.99 per year Annual plan displayed on the international page accessed in 2026.
One-time plan US$999.99 Displayed as lifetime AI/software with first-year Premium benefits; check current terms for what happens after that first year.

The listed monthly and annual prices make recurring software cost part of the ownership decision. The one-time option is not simply the robot’s purchase price: the page describes it as a plan that includes lifetime AI/software and first-year Premium benefits. Confirm the trial length, included services, renewal or plan requirements, taxes, shipping and regional terms on the current checkout page before buying.

SwitchBot’s May 12, 2026 launch release gave starting MSRPs of US$699.99, GBP 599.99, EUR 599.99 and CAD 999.99. Those were launch figures and may not match current store pricing. Launch announcement and starting MSRPs

Japan has separate terms: SwitchBot Japan’s FAQ lists a body price of ¥129,800 including tax, a 15-day software trial and a 100-day product warranty. It describes an Anshin plan that includes AI updates and repair warranty. These Japan-specific terms should not be assumed to apply in other countries. SwitchBot Japan FAQ

What works offline, and what needs the cloud?

SwitchBot says the built-in large language model supports speech and gestures offline, and that photos are stored on the device. However, the company explicitly says Chat Mode, diary features, firmware updates and selected services require a cloud connection. “Offline AI” therefore does not mean that all KATA Friends features work without internet access. The available product information does not establish every camera-processing path, cloud retention period, encryption detail or data-deletion control. Buyers who are sensitive to camera or voice data should check current privacy documentation and settings before setup rather than infer that all information stays local.

Does it work with other smart-home devices?

SwitchBot Japan says KATA Friends’ helper function can control or check supported SwitchBot devices and retrieve room-environment information through compatible devices. That describes a limited, supported-device integration—not universal compatibility with every SwitchBot product or third-party platforms. The help center lists a question about Alexa voice commands, but the index alone does not establish the answer. Confirm compatibility for the exact devices and services you use. What an independent review can—and cannot—conclude

The product claims point to a more expressive and mobile companion than a stationary assistant, but there is not enough independent evidence here to rate its emotional responsiveness, reliability, safety or day-to-day usefulness. The international product page showed no reviews when accessed for this review, and no hands-on testing was conducted. That is a snapshot, not proof that no owners have reviewed it elsewhere. Product page review display

Before treating the advertised experience as established, a hands-on evaluation would need to test:

  • Whether navigation and obstacle avoidance work across clutter, furniture, thresholds and changing room layouts.
  • How reliably it recognizes touch, speech and gestures in ordinary household conditions.
  • Battery runtime, operating noise and the consistency of returning to and connecting with its charging base.
  • What functions continue when Wi-Fi is unavailable, and what data the cloud-dependent features process.
  • Setup, privacy controls, and safe interaction around children and pets.
  • Which specific SwitchBot devices the helper function supports.

Who should consider KATA Friends?

KATA Friends may interest someone specifically looking for a moving, character-style AI companion and willing to pay for both the robot and the required post-trial plan. It is harder to justify if you want a low-cost stationary assistant, require clearly documented offline behavior, or need proven navigation and safety performance. Those distinctions follow from the product’s listed capabilities and plan terms; they are not claims about measured performance.

Check the current regional product page for total cost and plan conditions, and confirm the cloud-dependent features and compatible devices before purchase. Optional outfits and accessories are listed on the product page, but are not necessary to assess the core purchase. Current product and accessory listings
