VGChartz’s indexed August 2026 result says Nintendo Switch 2 outsold PlayStation 5 worldwide that month. It also lists higher year-to-date estimates for Switch 2 than for PS5 through August. However, the available result does not show August’s exact unit totals or the detailed method behind the estimates, so the ranking is best read as a third-party estimate—not an audited shipment or official sell-through figure.
Did Switch 2 outsell PS5 worldwide in August 2026?
According to VGChartz’s indexed result for its August 2026 worldwide hardware estimates, yes: Switch 2 ranked ahead of PS5 for the month. The result available for this report does not expose the two consoles’ August unit totals, a complete worldwide chart, or enough methodology detail to independently evaluate the monthly gap. The claim should therefore remain attributed to VGChartz and described as an estimate.

That distinction matters: a third-party market estimate is not the same measure as a manufacturer’s reported cumulative sales or a retailer-based point-of-sale tally. The available figures do not establish that Switch 2 shipped more units than PS5, nor do they provide an official August sales total.

What other sales figures say—and what they measure
Nintendo’s reported lifetime totals
Nintendo Investor Relations reports worldwide cumulative hardware sales of 23.68 million for Switch 2 and 156.59 million for the original Nintendo Switch as of June 30, 2026. Nintendo describes these as worldwide consolidated unit sales. They are company-reported lifetime totals ending before August, not estimates of August purchases or a direct comparison with PS5. Japan’s five-week retail estimate
Famitsu estimated 139,165 Switch 2 units in Japan from July 27 through August 30, 2026. It estimated 43,810 units for the three PS5 models combined over that same five-week window. Famitsu says its figures are estimates based on information available when compiled and may be revised. This is a Japan-only comparison over five weeks, not the source of VGChartz’s worldwide August ranking. Famitsu hardware sales ranking.
United States year-over-year context
Circana’s available data covers the United States in July 2026, not worldwide sales in August. It reports year-over-year unit declines for PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2; PS5 led hardware dollar sales while Switch 2 led unit sales. Those findings offer separate US market context, but they do not verify the global August ranking or support a universal claim that every console family declined everywhere. What does “all drop YoY” establish?
The available VGChartz result identifies its subject as worldwide hardware estimates for August 2026, but does not provide the full chart, platform-by-platform August totals, or the comparable prior-year figures needed here to examine each year-over-year change. As a result, the broad “all drop YoY” wording cannot be independently checked from the accessible figures in this report.
The separate decline statement that can be specified is Circana’s: in the United States during July 2026, unit sales were down year over year for PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2. It concerns a different geography and month, and it does not prove that all platforms fell worldwide in August.
Quick Recap
How to read the headline
- Monthly worldwide ranking: VGChartz’s indexed result places Switch 2 ahead of PS5 for August 2026, but the exact monthly totals are not available in that result.
- Year-to-date comparison: VGChartz lists Switch 2 at 7.81 million and PS5 at 5.46 million through its August report; both values are estimates.
- Other figures are not interchangeable: Nintendo’s numbers are cumulative company-reported totals through June 30, Famitsu’s are Japan-only estimates across five weeks, and Circana’s cited comparison is US data for July.
