A VPN server in Switzerland makes websites see a Swiss IP address for traffic sent through that tunnel. If you specifically need a Zurich address, the provider has to offer a Zurich server by name. A country-level “Switzerland” option does not, by that fact alone, show that the server sits in Zurich.

This article does not report a test run by us. The performance figures below come from Comparitech’s published Switzerland-route measurements, updated September 20, 2026. Provider infrastructure details come from the providers’ own pages, and each is attributed where it appears.

Swiss IP versus Zurich IP: what the difference means

A Swiss IP address is a public address registered to a Swiss network. When you connect through a VPN exit server in Switzerland, the sites you visit see that exit address instead of your home connection’s address. The address identifies the VPN’s network, not you personally, and many users share it.

A Zurich IP is a narrower claim. It requires the exit server to be physically in Zurich. Two things can differ from what the label suggests:

  • Country-level selection. A provider may let you pick “Switzerland” and route you to a server in another Swiss city, or to a shared pool that is not described in detail.
  • Geolocation databases. Sites often map an IP address to a city using commercial databases that do not always agree with one another. A Zurich server can show up under a different city in some lookups.

How to connect to a Zurich server

  1. Check that the provider names Zurich in its server list. OVPN’s Zurich page, with its location list marked current as of September 5, 2026, is an example of a provider that names the city directly. ExpressVPN’s Swiss page says its network includes Zurich.
  2. Install the provider’s app, or configure a protocol the provider supports for that server. OVPN lists OpenVPN and WireGuard for Zurich.
  3. Connect to the Zurich server rather than to a generic Switzerland entry.
  4. Check the address with at least two IP lookup tools. Expect the country to match. The city may differ between tools, so treat a city match across both as stronger evidence than a single result.
  5. If you need a fixed address for hosting or for opening specific ports, confirm the provider’s IP options before you subscribe. OVPN’s standard service assigns shared addresses through NAT, and it sells public IPv4 addresses as an add-on for uses that need multiple ports open.

ExpressVPN recommends using its in-app speed test to choose a Switzerland server when you are abroad. That is the provider’s own guidance, and it helps when a distant server is slow.

What each metric measures

  • Speed retention is the share of unprotected speed that remains once traffic passes through the tunnel.
  • Idle latency is the round-trip time when the link is not busy.
  • Loaded latency is the median increase over each sample’s own idle reading while the link is saturated. It is an increase, not a total round-trip time.
  • Connection time is a median taken only from successful connections. Failed attempts are excluded, so the figure may look better than what a user experiences on a bad day.

Reading the numbers without over-ranking

No single column settles the choice. IPVanish and CyberGhost show the smallest loaded-latency increases in the table (25.5 ms and 26.1 ms), yet their speed retention is lower (82% and 75%). Surfshark retains the most speed, but its loaded-latency figure is higher than those two. Proton VPN’s 527.1 ms loaded-latency increase and 29.4 s connection median are the weakest results in the table, and Proton’s own privacy positioning does not change those measurements.

These are single-source measurements on one route. They tell you how each service behaved on that route when Comparitech measured it, not how it will behave from your location, on your line, or on a different Swiss server.

How to verify a server is really in Zurich

Latency alone does not prove where a server is. IVPN’s guide on verifying server locations explains that routing and peering can make the physically nearest measurement point show a higher round-trip time than a distant one. The guide also notes that a mislocated measurement point can make a correctly placed server appear to be somewhere else.

Use these checks together:

  • Compare the provider’s stated city with at least two geolocation results for the exit address.
  • Look at whether the provider publishes its data-centre details and transit arrangements. OVPN states that it rents two rack units at Interxion’s data centre at Sägereistrasse 35 in Zurich, uses a 3 Gbit/s uplink to M247, and has Cogent, Telia and SwissIX transit and peering. These are OVPN’s own statements, not an independent audit.
  • Treat a provider’s confirmation as a claim. IVPN reports that its Swiss servers were confirmed to be in Zurich by the provider. That is a reported confirmation, not an audit of every provider in the market.

Privacy and Swiss jurisdiction

Switzerland is often cited as a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, but the legal position depends on what each provider actually does. Proton AG’s transparency report, last modified January 6, 2026, states the following:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

That statement is Proton’s own, and it applies to Proton VPN. The same report says legal requests counted in its figures must come through official Swiss channels. For 2025, it lists 59 legal requests and 59 denials. These numbers describe Proton’s reporting, not the conduct of other providers, and they do not mean a Swiss-based service can never be compelled to produce data.

When you compare providers, ask each one for its own written no-logs or retention policy and check whether it has published a transparency report. A Swiss address tells you about the exit point. It does not tell you what the company keeps.

Limits of a Swiss exit address

  • A Swiss address does not guarantee access to services that restrict content by location or block known VPN address ranges.
  • Shared exit addresses can be associated with many other users, which can trigger extra verification on some sites.
  • Choosing a Zurich server does not change the language, currency or account settings of a site you visit; those depend on the site.
  • Connection speed and latency depend on the provider’s server load at the time you connect, and the figures above do not capture that variation.
