“Swiss Fort Knox” is a commercial underground data-center service in Switzerland, not the U.S. Army installation or a gold vault. MOUNT10 says the facility occupies former Swiss Army bunkers in the Alps and is operated by SIAG Secure Infostore AG. Its public description combines controlled physical access, encrypted and redundant storage, colocation, and backup services—but the available evidence is primarily provider-authored, not an independent ranking of Europe’s safest data centers.
What is Swiss Fort Knox?
Swiss Fort Knox is MOUNT10’s name for an underground data-center facility in Switzerland. MOUNT10 says it uses former Swiss Army military bunkers and that the construction is intended to resist military and civilian threats while allowing the interior climate to be controlled independently of outside conditions. Those are the operator’s descriptions, not quantified engineering guarantees or results from a published independent test. See MOUNT10’s Swiss Fort Knox overview.
The nickname is brand language. It should not be confused with Fort Knox in Kentucky, the U.S. military installation, or a precious-metals depository. Public pages reviewed for this profile do not establish a precise current entrance address; an ETH Zurich student project discusses a bunker setting in Saanen, Canton of Bern, but it is secondary material rather than an operator confirmation.

SIAG and ISO 27001
MOUNT10 says SIAG is based in Zug and ISO 27001 certified. Treat that as a published company claim. ISO 27001 applies to a defined organization and scope, so a buyer should request the current certificate, covered entity, scope statement, issuing body, and validity dates before treating it as evidence about every system or building. A PHOENIQS page also says SIAG runs both Swiss Fort Knox locations, which supports the multiple-location description but does not replace checking SIAG’s current documentation: PHOENIQS data-center information.
How safe is Swiss Fort Knox?
MOUNT10 publicly describes a layered operating model rather than claiming that the bunker is impossible to penetrate or immune to cyberattacks.
Physical and operational controls
- Access to sensitive areas is limited to selected employees.
- Operations run around the clock through a dual operation center.
- Operational procedures use a dual-control principle, requiring two-person control for specified activities.
- Video surveillance and fire monitoring operate continuously.
These controls are statements by MOUNT10 on its facility page. The public page does not provide a complete independent audit, penetration-test results, incident history, or a quantified resistance rating for the bunker.
What the public evidence does not prove
The reviewed sources do not establish a third-party ranking, a guaranteed ability to withstand every military or natural event, a specific power-autonomy duration, or an uninterrupted uptime record. “Safest in Europe” or similar superlatives should therefore be read as marketing language, not an independently demonstrated comparison.

How are customer data protected?
Encryption and key control
MOUNT10 says its services use “256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).” It also says each customer receives a personal encryption key that is unknown to MOUNT10. That arrangement can reduce the provider’s ability to decrypt customer content, but the practical protection depends on key generation, storage, recovery, rotation, access procedures, and what data is encrypted in each service. The cited page does not publish all of those implementation details.
Redundancy and availability
MOUNT10 describes redundant data storage and a contractual availability level of at least 99.7%. This is a service commitment, not a security statistic and not a promise of zero downtime. The public material reviewed does not state the measurement interval, exclusions, service-credit formula, or remedies. Those terms should be read in the contract before comparing the figure with another provider. Details are on MOUNT10’s Swiss Fort Knox page.
What can a business obtain there?
Server housing and colocation
MOUNT10 calls the offering “server housing,” also known as server homing or colocation. Customers can rent the capacity they need, from an individual rack to an entire server room, through MOUNT10’s work with SIAG. This is a physical hosting service: the customer places or leases infrastructure in the facility rather than simply subscribing to a cloud application. See MOUNT10 server housing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Automated backup
MOUNT10 separately offers automated, standardized backup. It says data is transferred in encrypted form over the internet for storage in the mountains and presents the service for small and midsize businesses, enterprises, and especially public-sector customers. Backup storage is distinct from renting racks or a server room: it protects copies of data, while colocation houses running customer equipment.

What does “Swiss” mean for data residency?
MOUNT10 presents Swiss storage as part of its data-protection proposition. For organizations with residency or sovereignty requirements, the contract should identify the legal entity, every processing and support location, subcontractors, cross-border transfers, and the governing privacy terms. A Swiss physical site alone does not answer those questions.
Is the electricity renewable?
MOUNT10 states that 100% of its electricity consumption is covered by renewable sources. The statement appears on the company page and is not accompanied there by a dated, facility-specific electricity mix, methodology, or emissions accounting. It should therefore be reported as a company-level claim, not as proof that every Swiss Fort Knox location is powered exclusively by on-site renewable generation. See MOUNT10’s company page.
What should a prospective customer ask?
- Request the current ISO 27001 certificate and scope for the exact operating entity and service.
- Ask how the 99.7% availability commitment is measured, which outages are excluded, and what remedies apply.
- Confirm whether encryption covers data in transit, at rest, backups, and metadata, and document who can recover or rotate customer-held keys.
- Obtain the redundancy design and perform or review a tested restore and disaster-recovery procedure.
- Clarify physical-access authorization, visitor controls, logging, escort rules, and emergency access.
- Ask whether the renewable-electricity claim applies to the specific facility, uses certificates or matching accounting, and covers which period.
- Map data residency, subprocessors, support access, and applicable contractual privacy obligations.
Bottom line on the “Swiss Fort Knox” name
Swiss Fort Knox is best understood as a Swiss underground colocation and data-storage service with a bunker setting, controlled operations, encryption, redundancy, and separate backup products. MOUNT10 and SIAG publish meaningful details about the operating model, but the public material does not independently prove a European safety ranking or absolute protection. The right evaluation is a contract-and-evidence review: confirm certification scope, service-level terms, key management, recovery testing, and the exact facility covered.
