Sweden is targeting its first orbital launch from Esrange in 2028 under a two-launch agreement with Firefly Aerospace for its Alpha rocket. But the Nordic launch picture has already changed: ESA says Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum reached orbit from Norway’s Andøya Spaceport on 5 September 2026. Esrange’s plan is significant, but it is not yet a completed orbital launch or an operational record comparable to Andøya’s milestone.
What is Sweden’s 2028 Esrange launch plan?
SSC Space and Firefly Aerospace have signed a multi-launch agreement for two Firefly Alpha launches from Esrange, both targeted for 2028. The announced missions are intended to serve Swedish national-security customers and additional commercial rideshare customers. This is a contract and target date; no orbital launch from Esrange has yet taken place. SSC Space’s announcement of the Firefly agreement
The agreement gives Sweden a named rocket and launch provider, rather than only a broad ambition to develop orbital launch services in the country. It does not establish the exact launch dates, payload assignments, or a recurring launch schedule.
What is the Swedish government’s role?
Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has contracted with SSC Space to establish a satellite-launch capability from Esrange for the Swedish Armed Forces. FMV gives the agreement’s value as SEK 209 million and says the infrastructure is intended to safeguard access for the Armed Forces, partners, and allies. FMV’s target for establishing this capability is 2028. FMV’s contract announcement

The defense contract and the Firefly launch agreement are related parts of the emerging capability, but they are distinct agreements: FMV’s contract funds and establishes access infrastructure, while SSC and Firefly’s agreement names the launch provider and vehicle for two targeted missions.
What remains before Esrange can launch an orbital rocket?
SSC’s 2026 progress update says several supporting facilities and systems are complete: the launch control center, payload-processing facility, vehicle-integration building, tracking and control systems, and security and storage facilities. However, final construction at Launch Complex 3C was still underway in that update. SSC’s Esrange progress update

Esrange is north of the Arctic Circle, and SSC describes the site as suited to small satellites seeking standardized polar or other high-inclination orbits. Those trajectories are valuable for missions that need to pass over high latitudes; they are not the right choice for every satellite or destination. A site’s location can support access to certain orbital inclinations, but mission fit depends on the satellite’s intended orbit and launch plan.

- BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
- REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
- SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
- STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
- RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
This makes the Nordic comparison a matter of different stages, not two equivalent launch sites racing toward the same first. Andøya has a reported orbital milestone with Spectrum; Esrange has a contracted two-launch Firefly Alpha plan, a Swedish defense capability agreement, and a 2028 target, while pad construction was still underway in SSC’s 2026 update.

How long has Esrange been launching rockets?
Esrange has a substantial history in suborbital research, which should not be confused with orbital satellite launches. The Swedish National Space Agency reported that by the site’s 60th anniversary in 2026, Esrange had launched more than 610 sounding rockets and over 700 high-altitude balloons. Those totals describe sounding-rocket and balloon activity, not satellites placed in orbit. Swedish National Space Agency’s Esrange anniversary feature
Quick Recap
What is still uncertain about the 2028 plan?
- The exact dates and payloads for the two Firefly Alpha missions have not been stated in the cited announcement.
- SSC’s 2026 update reported final pad construction ongoing; it does not establish a later completion or operational-readiness date.
- The announcements give 2028 as the target for the first launches and the Swedish capability, not a guarantee that either will occur on a particular date.
- The cited information does not establish whether launches will be open to spectators. SSC’s visitor information is about access to the site and visitor facilities, not public launch viewing. SSC visitor information
