Swan Song is worth watching if you want intimate, thoughtful science fiction rather than a thriller. Mahershala Ali gives the film its strongest reason to stay with it, playing a terminally ill husband and father—and the duplicate at the center of an extraordinary choice. Benjamin Cleary’s drama is tender and often affecting, though its measured pace and sometimes-sentimental emotional register may leave some viewers at a distance.
What is Swan Song about?
Written and directed by Benjamin Cleary, Swan Song is a 2021 Apple Original released on December 17. Cameron Turner (Mahershala Ali) learns he has a terminal illness and is offered an experimental alternative intended to spare his wife, Poppy (Naomie Harris), and their family grief. Glenn Close plays Dr. Jo Scott, and Awkwafina also stars.

The premise sets up a personal dilemma, not a real-world medical option: Cameron must weigh whether shielding his family from loss is an act of love or a decision with profound consequences for identity and family life. The film uses speculative science to explore love, sacrifice and grief, rather than to build an action-driven story or explain a detailed technology system. Apple’s film information describes the story in terms of love, loss and sacrifice.
How good is Mahershala Ali in the dual role?
Ali is the film’s central strength. He plays Cameron and the duplicate, making their relationship convincing through small differences in presence and response rather than showy contrasts. That restraint fits a story in which the most consequential conflict is internal: what a person owes the people they love, and what might be lost in trying to protect them.
#1 Best Overall
Wendy Ide, writing in The Guardian on December 19, 2021, praised the performance across the film’s changing emotional demands: “Ali is tremendous in a dual role that takes in everything from a beguiling meet-cute with his future wife (Naomie Harris) to a third act consumed by grief and doubt about whether he did the best thing for his family after all.” Read Ide’s review in The Guardian.
Harris gives Poppy warmth and emotional grounding, while Close’s Dr. Scott represents the unsettling clinical side of the offer. Their roles support the central question, though the film ultimately depends on Ali’s performance to give that question its force.
Is Swan Song moving or too sentimental?
Its mood is restrained, somber and meditative. The film spends more time on intimate relationships and anticipatory grief than on spectacle, and its measured approach can make the sadness feel earned. Viewers drawn to quiet dramas about family and loss are more likely to find it moving than those expecting brisk pacing or suspenseful sci-fi mechanics.

The emotional register occasionally edges toward the maudlin, and some viewers may feel the film signals its intended impact more than it deepens the speculative world behind the dilemma. The split is part of the viewing experience: its tenderness is a strength when the performances connect, but its deliberate pace may feel muted when they do not.
