Ditto Music reports that 74% of the independent artists in its 2026 survey earned less than $1,000 from music in 2025. That finding comes from 5,039 artists who had released music with Ditto, not a representative census of all independent musicians. It highlights the gap between being able to release music and earning enough to sustain a career.
How much did independent artists earn in 2025?
In The Independent Music Report 2026, Ditto Music says 74% of surveyed artists earned under $1,000 from music during the prior year, 2025. The finding reflects respondents’ reported music income; it does not establish what independent artists as a whole earned.
The survey gathered responses from 5,039 artists living in 112 countries. Its largest respondent markets were the United States (1,180), the United Kingdom (1,003) and South Africa (929). Respondents were recruited through Ditto’s artist community and channels, and all had released music with Ditto. The results are therefore best read as a snapshot of active, self-releasing Ditto users.

The survey suggests that making music a full-time job is not the norm among its respondents. Ditto reports that 64% worked a full- or part-time job outside music, while 22% said music was their full-time job. Only 29% believed their music income would be sustainable for the next three years.
#1 Best Overall
These are separate reported measures, not proof that outside work prevents a music career or that any particular release strategy will change earnings. Together, they show why access to distribution should not be confused with financial stability: releasing a track can be more accessible than building a reliable income around it.
What do artists say helps them find audiences?
Social video featured prominently in respondents’ accounts of discovery and promotion. Ditto says 67% identified social-video platforms as a source of new audiences, and 86% said they create social content to promote their music. The report also discusses playlist discovery, but the figures provided do not establish a like-for-like comparison between social video and playlists.
Rank #2
These percentages describe what respondents reported, not a measured causal effect. They do not show that posting social content will generate fans or income for a particular artist.
Why is touring difficult to afford?
Touring costs were a significant reported barrier: 82% of respondents said they could not currently afford the expenses of going on tour. That figure sits alongside a broader picture in which most respondents did not identify music as their full-time job.
Rank #3
The survey also covers live performance as an income source, but the reported figures here do not quantify how much artists earned from live shows or the costs of touring. The affordability result should not be read as evidence that touring is unprofitable for every artist.
How are respondents using AI in music-making?
Ditto reports that 47% of respondents already used AI in their music-making process. Common uses named in the report include mixing, mastering and vocal tuning. Reported use varied by age: 74% among respondents over 55, compared with 24% among those aged 18 to 24.
Rank #4
These are survey-reported adoption rates, not evidence that AI use improves quality, saves money or increases earnings. The age comparison also describes these respondent groups; it should not be generalized to all musicians in those age ranges.

The report is useful for understanding the experiences and views of the artists who answered it, but its recruitment and respondent base limit broader conclusions. All respondents had released music with Ditto, so their answers may not reflect musicians using other distributors, artists who have not released music, or the full population of independent artists.
Best Value
- Unless a result is identified as a follow-up, the reported percentages use all 5,039 respondents. Some follow-up questions were optional or conditional and therefore had smaller denominators.
- For questions where respondents could select more than one answer, percentages may add up to more than 100%.
- The survey reports experiences and opinions; it does not prove that easier distribution, a particular platform or a specific tool causes higher income.
Ditto Music CEO and co-founder Matt Parsons summarized the tension this way: “Independent artists have unprecedented access to audiences, technology and global distribution, but turning that access into a sustainable career remains a major challenge.” The survey’s income and work findings give that distinction a concrete measure for its own respondents.
